Informati<strong>on</strong> received from the railing height survey and communicati<strong>on</strong> with bridge<br />
engineers, transportati<strong>on</strong> planners, and bicycle advocates revealed several issues pertinent<br />
to the determinati<strong>on</strong> of bicycle railing heights. Several survey resp<strong>on</strong>dents indicated that<br />
a 1.1-meter (42-inch) railing evokes a feeling of insecurity while riding. As such, the<br />
1.4-meter (54-inch) railing height is perceived as providing greater protecti<strong>on</strong> in the event<br />
of a crash. However, some survey resp<strong>on</strong>dents also indicated that a 1.4-meter (54-inch)<br />
railing height reduces views of scenic landscapes, and diminishes bridge aesthetics.<br />
Furthermore, some survey resp<strong>on</strong>dents indicated that an additi<strong>on</strong>al 12 inches of railing<br />
substantially affects the cost of a bicycle facility or bridge project, without providing a<br />
proven increase in safety.<br />
Perceived Safety of Falling<br />
The primary purpose of a railing is to protect a bicyclist, pedestrian, or motorist from<br />
falling off a bridge or structure. As such, an important c<strong>on</strong>cern to a number of survey<br />
resp<strong>on</strong>dents was the percepti<strong>on</strong> of safety when traveling al<strong>on</strong>g a bridge.<br />
Survey Resp<strong>on</strong>ses<br />
Several questi<strong>on</strong>s within the survey solicited opini<strong>on</strong>s regarding the advantages and<br />
disadvantages of a 1.1-meter (42-inch) versus a 1.4-meter (54-inch) railing height. Some<br />
resp<strong>on</strong>dents expressed c<strong>on</strong>cern that a 1.1-meter (42-inch) railing height does not provide<br />
a feeling of security for bicyclists. As such, some feel that an advantage of the 1.4-meter<br />
(54-inch) railing height is that the higher height protects bicyclists from high falls and<br />
steep slopes, and provides a greater feeling of security.<br />
Four resp<strong>on</strong>dents to the advocacy survey identified their stature as a six-foot frame, and<br />
expressed c<strong>on</strong>cern that a 1.1-meter (42-inch) high railing would not protect them in the<br />
event of a crash. Two of the four resp<strong>on</strong>dents indicated that they are forced to reach<br />
down to the 1.1-meter (42-inch) high rail to push off. These four individuals possess<br />
greater heights than the 95 th percentile human adult male, whose center of gravity (COG)<br />
<strong>on</strong> a bicycle (according to Orr’s first scenario) is 45.9 inches. A COG of 45.9 inches is<br />
approximately four inches above a 42-inch rail height. Overall, the percepti<strong>on</strong> of<br />
insecurity for these four resp<strong>on</strong>dents (and similar-sized bicyclists) may be warranted.<br />
To accommodate bicyclists who expressed c<strong>on</strong>cern regarding the insecurity associated<br />
with a 1.1-meter (42-inch) railing, and those who believe the 1.4-meter (54-inch) height<br />
provides greater protecti<strong>on</strong> from falls, a railing height between 1.1 meters (42 inches) and<br />
1.4 meters (54 inches) represents a compromise. Perhaps a 1.2-meter (48-inch) railing<br />
height could provide both protecti<strong>on</strong> from steep slopes and high falls and a feeling of<br />
security.<br />
