The Future of the Foundation
PRESIDENT, NAILBA
CHARITABLE FOUNDATION
Iwish there was a way to look into a
crystal ball and see the future of the
Foundation. It’s hard to predict with
any level of certainty how any given
year will turn out when you’re talking about
philanthropy. As Jack says at budget time,
“You can’t budget charitable giving!”
So why do people give to charities?
To sum up the little bit I’ve read on the
subject, it’s not really a rational thing.
More than two-thirds of Americans give to
charities every year, but what’s behind how
we decide which causes to favor?
There are basically four reasons people
give to charities:
■■
They want to make a difference;
■■
They want to do something active about
a problem or take a stand on a particular
issue;
■■
They are motivated by personal recognition
and benefits;
■■
Giving is a good thing to do.
Let’s make this as easy as possible!
Contributing to the NAILBA Charitable
Foundation will mean you can make a
difference to a small, well run charity that
might not have other resources. These
charities are actively doing something about
a problem in their community, whether it’s
helping disabled children and their families
or funding a suicide prevention program.
Recognition isn’t a bad thing either.
Most corporate donors think it’s good for
business to be known as compassionate and
generous members of their communities.
And giving IS a good thing to do. The
generosity of NAILBA members and corporate
partners means we can make a difference to
many needy organizations around the country.
As I write this, we’re closing out the
fiscal year and I can say that we’ve been
extraordinarily blessed this year. So what does
the future hold for the Foundation? Just as
your involvement with charities where you
live increases your visibility in the community,
word of the Foundation’s grant giving has
spread. More and more charities are reaching
out to the Foundation for our support. Your
involvement in your communities is more
important than ever, as is your commitment
to support the financial goals of the
Foundation. The future depends on you, on all
of us, supporting the goals of the Foundation
through an annual contribution and resolving
to find and support an organization in your
community who can use your resources and
ingenuity for whom you can be a sponsor for a
NAILBA Charitable Foundation Grant.
I also see NAILBA 32 in our immediate
future, giving us the opportunity to celebrate
the Foundation’s continuing growth. Be
sure to explore the offerings at the Silent
Auction—bidding opens in October. You can
bid at the Annual Meeting, or anywhere,
anytime via your smart phone or tablet.
Really! You don’t even need to download
an app—go to www.BiddingForGood.com/
NAILBAAuction and check us out. Be sure
you don’t miss the Live Auction Friday
evening before the Mooers dinner. Buy a
raffle ticket for this year’s Legal & General
prize, or simply make your contribution at
the Friday morning General Session.
Please also make a point of thanking our
biggest supporters, because without them,
we wouldn’t be able to fund the grants
program to nearly the degree we have
attained. You’ll see a complete listing of all
this fiscal year’s donors in the annual list of
Donors and Grant Recipients at NAILBA 32.
The Foundation
depends on your
support, and with
your help, the future
looks bright indeed.
