Following a successful helicopter
conversion course, it has been
decided to give Lieutenant The
Prince of Wales further flying experience
in the commando support role
carried out by some Royal Navy helicopter
squadrons.
Prince Charles has remained at the
Royal Naval Air Station. Yeovilton.
Somerset, to continue more
advanced flying training instead of
joining the Royal Naval College.
Greenwich, on 7 January for the
Lieutenants' Course, as previously
announced. It is expected he will
attend that course next autumn.
Keel Laying of
HMS BROADSWORD
First of Navy's New
Type 22 Frigates
The keel of HMS Broadsword, the
first of the Royal Navy's new Type 22
frigates, was laid down at the Scotstoun.
Glasgow, shipyard of Yarrow
(Shipbuilders) Ltd. on Friday. 7
February. 1975.
The 3500 ton Broadsword has
been designed to combine a firstrate
antisubmarine capability with
command and control facilities. The
vessel will be powered by Rolls-Royce
marine gas turbine engines and will
be equipped with the latest
communication and navigation
The Optical Fire-Director supplied jar the Fast Patrol Boats being
built Jor the Sultanate oj Oman.
equipment. She will carry Exocet
guided missiles, a Seawolf surface-toair
missile system, and a Lynx antisubmarine
helicopter. Accommodation
to the latest standards
will be provided for a complement
of some 250 officers and men.
HMS Broadsword is the first Royal
metric units.
Deep Diving System
Prepares for Trials
Trials of a new 26-ton selfcontained
diving system which can
provide a work base 800 feet under
water will be held in Scotland.
Although built for this depth, the
bell, designed by the British Hunting
Group, will be tested at a depth of
1200 feet in an old mineshaft. Other
trials will be in the deep water of a
Scottish loch.
Hunting says that the diving
system is the first offered as a
complete package made up of
pressurised diving bell and decompression
chamber together with
gantry and control cabin. All of these
modules are designed to be fitted to
the deck of an oil rig.
Rapid Return To Surface
The spherical bell can be returned
to the surface without reducing the
internal pressure and then locked on
to the top of a module that is in turn
linked to the decompression
chamber. Thus a diver can be
brought to the surface quickly and
transferred under the same
pressure to the decompression
chamber where he can eat and sleep
in comfort.
