There seem to be two entirely different points of
view developing regarding the Australian Defence
prevail the eventual outcome seems likely to be the
closure of ADFA, at least in its present form.
of ADFA. The committee
suggests that young people
should no longer join one of
the three services and enter
reason for suggesting the
course of gaining their degrees
at ADFA. He felt that the
ADFA students were not
sufficiently exposed to the
wider Australian community.
It is no doubt true that the
armed services have a
particular set of attitudes,
values and traditions.
Experience has shown their
worth. Even in the late 20th
century, where war fighting
can employ the most
advanced science, these
values and traditions still have
their place. They are the sort
of thing that ought to be a part
of the education of ADFA
students.
However, even if ADFA is a
"military nunnery" this does
not mean that the students are
or will be unexposed to the
rest of the Australian
AUSTRALIA
community. After all, until
they enter ADFA they have
lived their lives in the ordinary
Australian community. And
when they graduate they will
thereafter have their homes in
Australian suburbia, whether
they be in Townsville, Sydney,
Rockingham, Darwin,
Katherine or Canberra.
It is in a way ironic that in
the year in which the
government has encouraged
Australia to remember, a
parliamentary committee
would appear to wish to
diminish the importance of
military values and traditions.
Curiously, while the
parliamentary committee
appears concerned that ADFA
