FIONA l. MACKAy
“Music doesn’t represent any tangible, earthly
reality. It represents things of the heart, feelings
which are beyond description, beyond
any experience one has had. The non-representational
but indescribably vivid emotional
quality is such as to make one think of an
immaterial or spiritual world.”
~ Oliver Sacks
Sleep – Holy Mountain
(EArACHE rECOrDS)
At some point in the course of a Sleep song I
have to close my eyes and allow the music to
take over time and space for a moment. This is
dangerous since my favorite Sleep song is currently
on a tape in my Volvo. Sleep is a ’90s stoner
doom metal band that has mastered the slow
creep toward victorious highs. With lazy, growling
melodies, strong bass lines, ritualistic drums,
and powerful build ups, this is quite possibly one
of my favorite bands.
Pierced Arrows – Straight To
The Heart (TOMBSTONE rECOrDS)
A toast! Long live rock & roll. Led by portland’s
timeless combo Fred and Toody Cole, previously
of Dead Moon, pierced Arrows produces fuzzy
rock ballads with painfully longing lyrics. Be prepared
for a few gems that will ruthlessly suck
you back into rebellious teenage feelings. Suggested
beverage: Simpler Times. Lots of ’em.
Blonde Redhead – Melody of
Certain Damaged Lemons
(TOUCH & gO rECOrDS)
I surrender to Blonde redhead. To be both
haunting and assertive, undeniably catchy and
strange. Every track is composed with brilliant
and technical melodies topped with the most
beautifully sweet and dreamy voice. I cannot say
enough about this band.
Barbara Mason – Another Man
(ESSENTIAL MEDIA)
My musical interests have led me to quality lyricists
as of late. That said, it is always difficult to
deny a strong booty grinding beat. The combination
of the two is not always easy to find. Barbara
Mason’s 1984 release, Another Man, takes
care of both needs flawlessly. Mason tells you
stories with perfect pitch and growling moans
of pain and humor. I feel like I’m listening to an
old friend chat over cheap champagne. So that
means I’m not drinking alone, right? right.
The Dickies – Dawn of the
Dickies (CApTAIN OI!)
Best thing I’ve heard since The Undertones’
Teenage Kicks. The difference being that Dawn of
the Dickies has the stamina to carry that high
energy pop/punk throughout the entire record.
The Dickies are a punk group from San Fernando
Valley, CA that formed in the late-’70s. Lead
singer Leonard graves phillips orchestrates the
melodies with his campy, ramones-esque voice
over the fast-paced tunes to create an essential
record for any punk fan.
Burt Bacharach
How an old man read my every romanticized
thought and then wrapped them into the most
appropriate theatrical tune is beyond me. The
man hits the nail on the head with those lyrics! I
wish I had known about this when I was 14 and
utterly bummed.
dj SANTO
The Delta Bombers – Howlin’
(WILD rECOrDS)
This rockabilly band from Las Vegas kicks ass! I
had the opportunity to see them put on a great
performance during their record release party
at “The Whistle Bait” in Downtown LA. All of
their tracks are upbeat and will have you boppin’
& stompin’ throughout the record which you
can hear they put their hearts & soul into!
Note: check out www.thewhsitlebait.com for monthly
shows hosted by DJ Hellhound.
Freddy Fender – Rock ’N Roll
(as Eddie Con Los Shades)
(ArHOOLIE)
Long before “Wasted Days and Wasted Nights”
and “Before the Next Tear Drop Falls,” you will
hear Eddie Medina (aka Freddy Fender) as young
a rock ’n’ roller sing his own hits in Spanish such
as “Acapulco rock” and “Mi Nena.” All of the
tracks have an upbeat rhythm with a slight surf
sound but rock ’n’ roll prevails. This record is
definitely a treasure piece for every music enthusiast!
Enrique Guzman y Los Teen
Tops – Sus Mejores EPs en
España (1960-1963)
(rAMA LAMA MUSICWOrLD)
Here is the greatest Spanish rock ’n’ roll band
to cover all of the American hits such as “Jailhouse
rock” (“El rock De La Cárcel”); “Johnny
B. good” (“Ven, Johnny, Ven”); “good golly Miss
Molly” (“La plaga”); and the list goes on. Enrique
guzman is the equivalent of Elvis presley of
Mexico so this record will have everyone dancing
at your family reunion or DJ gig!
Rockabilly From The Vaults of
US Decca Records – Various
This is a great record full of great non-commercial
digitally re-mastered tracks by roy Hall,
Johnny Carroll, and so on. The CD also includes
Decca, DOT, Columbia, Sun, and Atlantic.
Year of The Dragon (1985) –
Directed by Michael Cimino
This is by far my favorite gangster flick of all
time! It stars a young Mickey rourke portraying
a bitter Vietnam vet who is politically incorrect
yet an honest and relentless police Captain
who battles organized crime in New York City’s
Chinatown. Unlike any other gangster flick this
movie explores both sides of the “good guy vs.
bad guy” battle. get ready to root for the good
guy!
