It’s funny, this was my cartoon when I was young,
The King’s Speech (2010) –
Directed by Tom Hooper
This was my favorite movie. I saw it with my mom
underdog-overachiever succeeds movie.
The Black Keys – Brothers
(NONESUCH)
Breaking Bad
Season 1, 2 or 3
Created by Vince gilligan. Still the best show on
TV!
Tip:
There is just too much music in my head to pick. Although
that Brothers album (Black Keys) is way good. I’ve been
watching a lot of BBC stuff. Killer Whales are so smart.
I hope Theodore Kaczynski wasn’t right, those Particle
Accelerators sure are scary.
P.S Love is all you need.
Duran Duran –
All You Need Is Now
(S-CUrVE rECOrDS)
New Duran Duran, holy effin
smokes!!! produced by a Mr.
Mark ronson, Duran Duran went
back into their rio sound closet and
pulled out some old tricks. Classic John
Taylor Chic-esque boppable bass lines,
a wailing Le Bon, passionate as ever, Sir Nick
rhodes adding beeps and bops, and the poppy
backbone keeping beat known as roger Taylor.
get pumped: “girl panic” is the album’s new
“girls on Film,” and “The Man Who Stole a
Leopard“ is a modern-day “Chauffeur.” Uh
Huh. Uh Huh.
I Object – Save Yourself 7”
(FErAL kIDS rECOrDS)
Two new gems and a Screamers cover. pumped
that this female-fronted upstate NY thrash
band is still at it. posi core at its best, “Savior” is
charged, and Barb’s vocals are fiercer and more
pissed than ever. Total no brainer. get down!
Anika – Anika (STONES THrOW)
I don’t know why peanut Butter Wolf rules
so hard, but he does. Introducing to the Wolf/
Hawthorne/Blacc/pants family is Anika. And she’s
nuts. She’s a space-age, gothy, delicate singer with
good beats and eerie organs. Her and geneva
Jacuzzi should tour together. Trooth!
Thou – Summit (SOUTHErN LOrD)
I’m not into doomy, sludgy metal. And I certainly
don’t like eight and a half minute drawn
out songs that could be done in two. But Thou?
Thou is different. Four songs on white vinyl.
That’s all they need. The boys from Baton rouge
are pissed, and you’re gonna hear about it. They
have intense build ups, climax, and change mood
by the end of the song; the exact opposite of
what I like. Maybe I should calm down.
Off! – First Four EPs 7” (VICE
rECOrDS)
Mr. Nervous Breakdown himself, keith Morris, is
at it again. He’s still mad. He still doesn’t belong.
He’s still a total spazz. And he still knows how
to make the totally perfect one-minute punk
song. Four 7”s, artwork by raymond pettibon.
Uhhh…DUH!
Vincent Segal –
Chamber Music
(SIx DEgrEES)
What it says: quiet music on
kora and cello, the first such collaboration
ever if I’m not mistaken.
And it works because both players,
one Malian, one French, are obviously having
a good time and seem relaxed at what
they are doing. Charming, atmospheric, different!
Manose – Dhyana Aman
(WHITE SWAN)
Yes, it’s meditation music but nothing
concocted on keyboards. Manose is the
guy that plays his bamboo flute whenever the
Dalai Lama is on tour, and he also works with
Deva premal and others. Here his guests are Tibetan:
Choying Drolma and Dorje Lama. Simple,
but beautiful.
Angola Soundtrack –
Various Artists (ANALOg AFrICA)
From the DJ that brought us the African Scream
Contest. Lusophone music from a forgotten
country in Africa, Angola, starting in the 1970s,
some Latin-tinged, some psychedelic, always
great guitar. For lovers of Nigeria Special, Orchestra
Baobab, etc.
AfroCubism – Various Artists
(WOrLD CIrCUIT)
A meeting of some of the best Malian players
(Toumani Diabate, Bassekou kouyate, kasse
Mady Diabaté, and more) in Havana with Cuban
musicians (fronted by the great Eliades Ochoa
of Buena Vista Social Club fame). Obviously this
had to be a great album, covering the best of
both worlds.
Asmara All Stars –
Eritrea’s Got Soul
(OUT HErE rECOrDS)
Modern Ethio-reggae/soul/reggae from a part of
the world that is dear to me. A project between
Eritrean performers and French musicians that
works and reflects what one would hear there
nowadays walking in the streets.
