Die – Directed by Douglas Sirk
Oh my god, this movie is amazing! Douglas
Sirk’s masterpiece of WWII doom and gloom
told, rather audaciously, from the german point
of view. Worth buying a region free DVD player
just for this movie alone.
Blur: No Distance Left To
Run (2010) – Directed by
Dylan Southern
Unexpectedly moving documentary on Blur’s
sudden reunion in 2009. If you lived through the
’90s remotely affected by Britpop this documentary
will make you smile and feel old at the same
time.

Bill Withers – Naked & Warm/
Making Music (COLUMBIA)
Bill Withers, to me, is one of the best singer/
songwriters to ever put pen to pad. These two
albums were pretty much slept on during the
’70s, for whatever reason, but they have been reissued
on CD, and the songs on them are amazing.
Naked & Warm contains a song called “City
Of The Angels,” where he asks LA in the gentlest
way possible to “make a place for him.”

This doc tells you everything you wanted to
know about that famous photo of jazz music’s
most prominent stars of the 1950s and years
to come. Disc 1 features the story of how the
picture came to be, along with interviews with
the musicians in the picture about the state of
music at the time and their experiences with the
other musicians. Disc 2 is the prize in the package
— it lets you scroll through the picture and
select a musician, and you are given a short, but
sweet crash course on their career, style, and
most popular works. A must have for any serious
jazz music fan.
