“DARKENU”- the Yeshiva Way!
11 February 2011 – 30 Shevat
NEWSLETTER NO. 05/11
“Clothes maketh the man’, goes the popular idiom. Indeed if a kohen served without the special vestments
described in our sidra at great length, his service was invalid. It seems that it is not sufficient to simply
‘walk the walk and ‘talk the talk’ – you need also to ‘dress the part’. Even the most sincerely spiritual,
modest and frum person needs to consider the external appearances.
To be sure, if one only focuses on the appearance at the expense of the inner dimension – his service is
greatly flawed. But the same goes for the inverse.
When you look at your image in the mirror, as you dress for the office, or for the simcha, or when you catch
a glimpse of your image in a window as you pass – do you find yourself saying: “There is a G-d fearing
Yid. There is a thoughtful person. There is dignity and kindness”. Do you see an inspired person who is
mindful first and foremost of the spiritual opportunities and challenges of the day.
Or does the mirror shout back “Hey there Mr Wall Street!”, or “Mr Hotshot. Mister Cool. Mr Corner
Cutter!”.

What does your mirror say?
We need to consider what message we are declaring to all the world – and even more crucially – to
ourselves and to our children.
Another way of saying this is that we try to dress not just our bodies, but also the neshama. We are
presenting our neshama and total personality in the appropriate fabric.
We are actually dressing a sefer Torah!
The way we dress our bodies and our houses are not just decorative but rather are a dramatic statement
of priority and thoughtfulness.
YESHIVA GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL
DEAN VECHESHBON
Our daily Divrei Torah this week (Parshat Tetzaveh) have focused on the concept of clothing, with
the insights of Rav Hirsch including a lesson in phonetics (“Rivka Crusoe & Woman Friday”):
PeKuDot (commands) and BeGaDim (clothing) are both “improved outcomes based”. The
“initiation” of Aharon and the Kohanim got us thinking that next year perhaps we should initiate the
new student leaders of the school rather than the youngest class! (In any event – your ear lobes,
thumbs and toes will be safe!)
Welcome back to Morah Vigler and Morah Stern. Mazal tov for the Bar Mitzvah! Welcome back to
our “youth diplomats” Sarah Levin and Naomi Shear who returned from the Model United Nations
forum hosted by Yeshiva University in New York. We really look forward to hearing about your
experiences (once you thaw out!).
Although it is only Adar Alef, Rosh Chodesh ushered in an amazing spirit. Thank you to the Grade
11’s for the lively Tefillah, to the Matrics who showed us how it’s done “on the dance floor” and to
the entire Girls’ High who were impeccable ladies the entire day! We owe you one!
Although it was a small Friday morning Parshah Chaburah, (the rest probably sleeping off the late
night Challah Bake for the Shalhevet lunch?), the dynamic speaker was a treat to behold!
Shalhevet concluded last week with an awesome Tisch@Tova and a senior high Shabbat lunch in
the canteen. Pretty pink laminated Shalhevet benchers have arrived adding another “cherry on top”
to an awesome programme!
The Grade 10’s are handing over the Chessed Committee “batton” to the Grade 9’s – but they’re not
waiting for any decisions before launching Pixie Fairy week. (I hope you are all saving your tuck
shop change to treat your pixie next week!!!) The Grade 9’s also stood out in their attendance of the
11 February 2011 – 7 Adar 12

Sushi & Shakes Friendship Circles session at Traci Bloch this week. Shkoyach to all our student
who attended and “behatzlachah” with the wonderful “chessed” you will be involved in!
With that responsibility off your shoulders, Grade 10’s can really get psyched for Israel. (By the
way, it’s only Bedouins who still live in tents in Israel!)
The Grade 7’s have been addressing the issue of bullying with Mrs. Gerson creating “No Jokes
Zones” in the school. Rav Gross is always a welcome visitor to the school. The teachers had a
combined session as well as personalized consultation time. Students from Grade 10 to 12 had
shiurim with Rav Gross and Shalhevet even granted the Rav honourary status to be the guest
speaker at “Soup with a Jewish Woman” at Thursday night’s “seder”! Other events this week:
Grade 7 & Grade 8 breakfast clubs with their prefects – Shkoyach to you all!!! Hashavat Aveidah
week brought the lost property Victor collects daily after school from the staircase storeroom into the
sunlight (please don’t forget to thank Victor!) with many items being retrieved. Please collect what
belongs to you. The rest we’ll give to “tzedakah” at the end of the week. The week ended with
Ronit Janet doing a “Refuah Sheleimah” Challah Bake pictured below (let’s continue “davvenin” for
good news!) and Rabbanit Ester Sternberg is scheduled to address Grades 9 – 12 during Limudei
Kodesh as we go to print.
Anyone interested in one-on-one tutoring, please call Nechama Rosowski on 0790843460.
Brace yourselves for IQ launch this coming week!!!
It has come to our attention that there have been reports of
children having lice in their hair at schools in the Johannesburg
area. As this is extremely contagious, I would ask you please to
be very vigilant and to check your children’s hair on a regular
basis to ensure that they are lice-free.
In the event that you child does have lice, please contact your
doctor or pharmacy for the appropriate remedy. Please do not
send any child to school until he or she is lice-free.
We hope by being cautious, we will prevent any cases of lice at
our school.
Dear Parents,
Thanks to all the Moms and their children who attended the tea on Monday. It was a lovely opportunity for
Moms to meet each other and the children really enjoyed spending time with Mom at school.
MY SCHOOL CARD
We have the opportunity to raise funds for the school without it costing us a cent! My school card is a
wonderful opportunity for companies like – Woolworth, Engen, Waltons, Jacks Paint, Toys R Us, Reggies
and many other stores to give back to our community. Please ensure that you are in possession of My
School Card and that grandparents, aunties, friends and the whole family participates.
Forms are available from the office and one of our mothers has kindly agreed to take on this project on
behalf of the Nursery School. Thanks to Nicole Mandelberg for all the time she has given to this project.
YESHIVA COLLEGE PRE-NURSERY SCHOOL
PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents
This week, our exploration of "Colour in Our World" took us into the colours of transport. Robots and trucks
kept us creatively busy; catchy songs were sung; new vocabulary was learned; and some interesting discussions
were held.
Parsha came alive for the children as we dressed up in the clothes of the Kohein Gadol. The children were
entranced! Our theme of colour was extended to and integrated with the garments of the Kohein Gadol.
MY SCHOOL CARD
Letters regarding the "My School" card were placed in the letter pouches last week. Please support this initiative
by obtaining a card and encourage grandparents, aunts, uncles etc, too, as it is a fantastic and easy way to raise
funds for the school.
CONTAINERS - WATER PLAY
We are looking for containers of various sizes for water play. The children learn so much through pouring from
one size container into another. Examples of containers include yoghurt containers, lecol bottles, margarine
containers etc. All containers need to be plastic.
PLAYBALL
Please ensure that your child has a hat/cap available for Playball on a Thursday. Sunscreen also needs to be
applied before school.
We are delighted to welcome Rachaeli Shapiro as part of our team! Rachaeli joined us at the beginning of the
year and will be assisting us for a few hours every day.
Have a wonderful weekend!
HALACHA ARTICLE
INTERNET PRIVACY: WHAT INFORMATION SHOULD NOT BE REVEALED?
by Rabbi Dr. Asher Meir, Business Ethics Center of Jerusalem
Some information should never be disclosed, even if the person consents to such exposure.
PRIVACY VS. MODESTY
Question. Our firm collects private information about our customers. For instance, we have the measurements and style
preferences of garment purchases. Can we sell this information to other vendors?
Answer. Jewish tradition not only guides us within the conventional approach to the issue of privacy, but also helps us
to look beyond it. A Torah perspective would convince us that we should consider not only privacy and consent, but also
the ideal of modesty and discretion.
Here, "privacy" refers to what a person would prefer to keep hidden, and "modesty" to refer to what normatively ought to
remain hidden. Jewish tradition affirms that a certain part of our being can flourish only in protected seclusion, and warns
us against a life lived in the public thoroughfare even if a person might be persuaded to consent to such exposure. Forcing
someone to reveal intimate details of his or her private life is an invasion of privacy; but even a person who readily reveals
these details to others is guilty of indiscretion.
Modesty is a paramount value in Jewish tradition. In the Torah, Bilaam comments, "How goodly are your tents, O Yaakov!"
Rashi explains that the tents of the Jewish people are goodly because they are carefully arranged so that no looks into his
neighbour's dwelling (Numbers 24:5). And Jewish law asks us to avert our gaze if we see someone engaging in a private
activity, even an innocent activity which is not being concealed. Rav Shneur Zalman of Liadi writes, "Neighbours need to be
as careful as possible not to look at each other's activities in their common courtyard." (1)
Modesty is one of the most important foundations of a Torah personality. Modesty means there are some things that we
should keep to ourselves or to a small circle of friends. In order to develop a healthy personality, we need a clear
demarcation between ourselves and others; each of us needs to know that there are some things that belong only to
ourselves, secrets between the individual and the Creator.
One way we express the idea of modesty is through modesty in dress; men and women alike are encouraged to avoid
clothing which is revealing, provocative, or which flaunts the anatomy. The identical principle applies to our character;
Jewish tradition discourages being too open with private information. For instance, our Sages stated that a person shouldn't
flaunt his achievements; conversely, someone who has a shortcoming should be discreet about that too. (2)
A related consideration is that scrutiny damages our sense of dignity and restraint. Research studies on prisoners and
others who lack privacy confirm this effect. Our Sages, recognizing these considerations, say that if someone is determined
to commit an immoral act, he should at least do so in utter secrecy. Then the act won't contribute to public brazenness, and
the individual will find it easier to correct his behaviour, since his public image is unaffected. (3)
Of course there is a difference between statistical information about a person's purchases and browsing behaviour on the
one hand and gossip about his personal habits on the other. The sources mentioned do not militate against the collection of
personal information about Internet usage, especially given the great commercial value of this information. But by
impressing on us the human problems inherent in situations of surveillance, they introduce a new and valuable dimension
to the discussion. Merchants and consumers alike should ask themselves: Is this disclosure really necessary?
CONCLUSION
Last week's column discussed data sharing from the point of view of consent, focusing on what human beings want. But a
Torah perspective reminds us that we must also concern ourselves with who human beings are. The character of the
individual and of society as a whole requires the shelter of modesty for its development, and an environment of constant
surveillance and information gathering has the potential to undermine this shelter. While we need to acknowledge the
commercial value of Internet information gathering, we should also keep in mind the humanistic and spiritual dimensions of
this issue.
PESACH APPEAL
Pesach is coming up soon!!
The Chevrah Kadisha runs a Pesach food collection for distribution to
the Jewish Community clients requiring help. At present there are over
750 families in need of assistance and due to last year’s downturn in
the economy the number of families we help is unfortunately growing.
The collection takes place in the 2 weeks before Pesach on a Roster
Rotation system, throughout the week (not on Saturdays) and on
Sundays. This culminates in the packing of the boxes on the Sunday
before Pesach (10 April), a truly uplifting event, where both young and
older volunteers come to offer their services.
If you have some time to collect Pesach food at the Norwood
Hypermarket over the 2 weeks prior to Pesach, please call Charmaine
on 0833106899 or email charmainem@thechev.org.za
