Life’s a Party – ENJOY!
“DARKENU”- the Yeshiva Way!
A tzaddik was once walking with his students in a field when they came upon a decaying dog’s carcass. The students
remarked at the offensive odour. Whereupon the Sage responded: “But what white teeth he has!” The Sage was teaching
that the essence of lashon hara is not just to avoid gossiping and slandering other people; rather at its core it is more about
not slandering Hashem’s world.
Tzara’as-type afflictions are supernatural occurrences. According to Rambam, all these afflictions – on the person’s body,
clothing or houses, are Divine signs and punishments for lashon hara.
One of the key mitzvos is Kiddush Hashem – to publicise Hashem’s existence and kindnesses. Truly the entire world, with
every blade of grass, joins in that Divine symphony.
When we ‘talk up’ His world by finding all that is kind and beautiful and uplifting – we are making a Kiddush Hashem,
declaring His Glory through everything in creation. When we unfortunately get caught up in the negatives, we are
remonstrating with Him, faulting His world and even declaring it ungodly or unworthy. (Based on a shiur of Rav Sheinberg.)
Imagine the scene…The king has invited you to his party and is walking you through the grand event introducing you to his
friends, associates and loyals. As he guides you through the palace, you begin passing snide remarks about the palace,
the décor, the guests and the food. Even at our own party, we would probably avoid such a guest. He would not be on the
re-invite list.
The great challenge of lashon hara, then, is to believe in the beauty and kindness of life and to be constantly alert to all that
is precious and to see Hashem’s kindness and wisdom. We need to remember that the King is leading us graciously
through His great banquet of Life. He is interested in our comments. He wants us to be happy at His party.
MENAHEL’S MICHTAV
Dear Friends,
It is with great excitement that I welcome you back to school for the second term. I hope that you had a
wonderful Pesach with your families and a rejuvenating break.
We find ourselves in the midst of Sefirat Haomer on Rosh Chodesh Iyyar. I spoke to the boys this week at
line-up about a very interesting term that we find every day in our davening. As we approach the Amidah,
we find that Hashem is described as, ‘Mashpil gei’im u’magbiah shefalim’, ‘Lowers the haughty and uplifts
the lowly.’ It seems like a strange expression – that we see Hashem as lowering one and then lifting one
up again. I think we get an insight into this description during this time of year. Just a few short weeks ago,
on Pesach, we turned Bread and Chametz into Public Enemy no. 1. However, if we look just 7 weeks after,
we find that the sacrifice that we bring to the Beit Hamikdash is bread! Not only that – the Torah refers to it
by the term, ‘Chametz’! The answer to this revolution in our relationship with bread lies in the period
between Pesach and Shavuot – Sefirat Ha’omer.
The Ramban on Parshat Emor comments that if you look at Shavuot closely you will see that it is very
connected to Pesach. It is called Shavuot which literally means ‘weeks’ – denoting the counting from
Pesach to Shavuot. Another one of its names is ‘Atzeret’ which means ‘stop’ or ‘end’. He says that
Shavuot to Pesach is like Shmini Atzeret is to Sukkot – it is the end of a process, with Sefirat Haomer
playing the role of Chol Hamoed between Pesach and Shavuot. The period in between is an opportunity
for incredible growth, as we go through all the Middot (character traits) that make up who we are. On
Pesach, we get ‘rid’ of everything – we search through our personalities – reverting to our core selves –
Hashem ‘lowers the haughty’. Following this, we progress through Sefirat Haomer, re-engaging with all the
elements of our personality in a healthy and constructive way, so that we emerge ‘rebuilt’ when we get to
Shavuot – after passing through all the 49 levels of the Sefirah. On Shavuot, therefore, we bring bread as
the actual sacrifice, representing bringing our best, refurbished, fullest selves to serve Hashem – ready to
receive the Torah. Hashem ‘uplifts the lowly’.
I stressed to the boys that the growth of Sefirat Haomer is also very much about levels – we count every
single day as we ascend upwards – just as we can’t miss a day in the counting, we can’t miss a step when
it comes to perfecting ourselves. I shared with the boys that while growth is different for all of us, for
everyone there is one commonality – it is about moving from where we are to where we aspire to be – and
that is the same for all of us. It is so important for us to all take stock of where we truly are and then grow
step by step to become our best selves – each in our own unique way – to bring out our true best self.
On the subject of achievement, we are all so proud of our two talmidim that left last week to go represent
us in the International Bible Quiz in Israel – Sam Cohen and Yonatan Ovad. It is with incredible pride, that I
share with you the great news that Sam has reached the finals of the quiz and we wish him so much
hatzlacha for this next stage – kol hakavod!!
This time of growth during the Sefirah is coloured by two of the incredible miracles of our time – Yom
Haatzmaut and Yom Yerushalayim! As a school and community we have lots of incredible events
organized and we look forward to having you join us in celebration. We are introducing a special event this
12 April 2013 – 2 Iyar 4

year – which promises to be a beautiful learning experience for the campus in between Mincha and Maariv
on Monday night – please look out for the leaflets and emails about this.
We had a beautiful Rosh Chodesh davening and breakfast where we promoted the upcoming Israel Quiz.
The first round is less than 2 weeks away and we are very excited to have our talmidim take part in this
fantastic competition organized by the Israel Centre.
Shabbat Shalom and Chodesh tov,
Leron Bernstein
onathan Jacobson – last year’s top student -came
to speak to the Metivta boys before Davening on
Thursday about his experiences in school and how
important his commitment to Torah learning was
during his time in school – especially during
Prelims and Finals of Matric.. Thanks Jonathan!
We wish you lots of hatzlacha as you return to
continue learning in Yeshiva in Israel!
We had a wonderful Rosh Chodesh breakfast on the
second day of Rosh Chodesh this week. A big
shkoyach to all the dads that came to join us for
davening – it was wonderful to have you with us!!
We started off the week on a sadder note with
the commemoration of Yom Hashoa at West
Park Cemetery. A big shkoyach to all those who
attended with their families – I was incredibly
impressed to see so many Yeshiva College
talmidim there. Also well done to Josh Kaplan
and Eli Feigenbaum for taking part in the
ceremony. We all dedicated our learning on
Monday to the memory of the 6 million.
FROM THE DESK OF THE PRINCIPAL OF THE HIGH SCHOOLS
Dear parents
A warm welcome back to everyone for the Second Term. New timetables have been issued to all the
learners and we are sure that the changes that we have made will have a very positive effect on all our
learners.
Our matrics are starting prelims on Wednesday 17 th April 2013 and I am sure they have all been preparing
and are ready to start writing. I am sure that the hard work that they have done will result in their achieving
the excellent results of which they are capable.
We are so proud to congratulate Samuel Cohen in Grade 10 on his wonderful achievement in coming in
the Top 16 of the international Bible Quiz. He will be taking part in the final round next week and we wish
him luck and much success.
The annual Yom Hashoah ceremony in memory of the Six Million Martyrs who perished at the hands of the
Nazis during World War 11 was held on Sunday 7 th April 2013 at 10h30 at Martyrs’ Monument, West Park
Cemetary. There were a large number of Yeshiva College learners at the ceremony. They looked very
smart in their school uniforms and I would like to thank all those who represented the school in such an
appropriately respectful manner.
Please note that Tuesday 16 th April is Yom Ha’atzmaut. It is a school day which every student is expected
to attend. Davening will begin at 8.00 a.m. in the main Shul. Learners are to dress in “civvies”. I would like
to remind you that all learners are to dress in a way that is in keeping with the religious ethos of our school.
For girls this means: skirts to cover their knees when sitting, sleeves to their elbows and appropriate neck
lines.
The Zionist Federation is having their annual celebration at Gold Reef City and I would like to encourage
everyone to attend this special event. In order to assist parents, the South African Zionist Federation has
arranged for two buses to transport some of our learners to Gold Reef City. Each of the buses can only
accommodate 60 people, we are offering this opportunity on a first come, first served basis.
There will be adult supervision on each bus and we will take those who book to Gold Reef City and the bus
will also be available to bring them back to Yeshiva College.
The bus will leave Gold Reef City to return to Yeshiva College at 18h00 sharp and anyone not on the bus
at this time will be assumed to have made an alternative arrangement to go home and the bus will leave.
A head count will not be taken.
According to the instructions of the Zionest Federation, any learner wishing to travel on the bus must
complete the attached indemnity form. Bookings for the bus must be made with Devora in the Girls’ school
and Teresa in the Boys’ school and signed indemnity forms must be brought to them.
Wishing everybody a wonderful Shabbos and an enjoyable Yom Ha’atzmaut.
Warm regards
YESHIVA GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL
DEAN VECHESHBON
Still in the festive month of Nissan it is strange to start the term with the somberness of Yom HaZikkaron
leSho’ah vehaGevurah. However, upon reflecting on the day as a day of remembering both tragedy and
heroism as opposed to a day of mourning, it fitted in perfectly as we
dedicated our lessons, both Kodesh and General Studies, to the
memory of the world we lost, their bravery and our small part in
rebuilding what Hitler & co. destroyed. Shkoyach to our students
who attended and participated in the Yom HaSho’ah vehaGevurah
ceremony on Sunday at Westpark as well as to YiD and Dani, Gabi &
Shoshie for the moving ceremony after Tefillah Monday morning!
On Tuesday morning after Tefillah we had a short for Margaret
Thatcher, the former Prime Minister of the
United Kingdom, who passed away on Yom
Hasho’ah. Besides the timing, Margaret Thatcher is a role model in terms of how
much women can achieve in general and in specific the debt of gratitude we
have to her for the role she played working with Ronald Reagan to bring about
the downfall of the former Soviet Union that led to the freeing of Soviet Jewry
from their prison behind the “Iron Curtain” and the “aliyah” of over 1,000,000 of
these Jewish “Prisoners of Zion”! This tied in perfectly with an insight into the
double story of the Exodus from Egypt and how, regardless of which storyline we
follow, the Egyptian army still ends up drowning in the sea. In this sense she
was “Moses” (or maybe “Miriam”) of the most recent Jewish Exodus from”
slavery”!
Two days of Rosh Chodesh Iyar, with visitors from the Israel Centre giving us a taste of the Yom
Ha’atzma’ut celebrations that await us, made the week quite packed so far! To complete the week’s
“action” our seniors were privileged to hear the incredible story of Penina Taylor about her life’s search for
truth. Penina is an international lecturer from the USA and then Israel who is a guest of Jews for Judaism.
We thank Darryl Frankel for facilitating this and obviously Penina for coming to speak to our students!
12 April 2013 – 2 Iyar 7

During Shiur Kelali for the Middle School this week we “Dated” the Omer. Using the dual Pessach
concepts of “I am Hashem’s first born” and “I am Hashem’s beloved daughter” we gauged the
atmospheres of the current “Dates”: Pessach (when we feel both), the Omer (only feel first born), Yom
HaSho’ah vehaGevurah (feel neither), Yom Hazikkaron (first born returns) and Yom Ha’Atzma’ut (feel both
again!).
Before Pessach a number of Grade 11 students ran a very successful Kiddies Corner. As our students did
fun-filled activities with the “kiddies”, the kids’ moms were able to prepare for Pessach. In the process a
significant amount of money was raised for the school – so it was a real win-win project! A special “yasher
kochechen” to Kaylee Lazarus, Gabi Urdang, Kezia Winer, Sassie Weinberg, Dani Singer, Sasha Price &
Jenna Damelin.
Kol Hakavod to those who were recently added to the group of Shalhevet students who received prizes for
their milestone achievements attending shiurim last term:
`
Shalhevet started up in the mornings again and hosted a special evening shiur this week with Rav Alon
Joseph.
I wish you all a wonderful term, a Chodesh Tov as I write this, a Shabbat Sha-lom for tomorrow afternoon
and finally a “mo’adim lesimchah le-ge’ulah sheleimah” for next week!
COUNSELLORS’ CORNER
Teaching our children responsibility
I learned that there is a difference between teaching our children responsibility and making them our
servants. One evening while sitting in someone's home for a meeting I noticed their twelve year old
daughter making a phone call that was clearly for her mother. When she finished that call, her
mother asked her to make one more call. When I concluded my meeting, I asked the mother why
her daughter was making these phone calls. She answered that she thought this helps teach the
child responsibility. I told the mother that from what I could see, unless she suffers from a language
barrier and is therefore unable to make the call, if she asks a child to make a call that is clearly for
herself the only thing that she has taught her child is how to transfer responsibility.
After this encounter I did an unofficial study by asking the children who come into my office for
counselling how they feel when their parents give them responsibilities. The result of my "scientific
study" was that, for most children, the way they felt depended upon the circumstances. The children
told me that when their parents asked them to do different tasks -- make a phone call, go to the
store, etc. -- and that task was for the sake of the child or for the family as a whole, it taught the
child responsibility. When the task was clearly for the parent's own convenience, the children felt
used and it taught transference of responsibility. In the future, these children just learned to ask their
younger siblings to do tasks for them. The experience had taught them that the older and stronger
have permission to exploit the younger and weaker.
From my conversations with these children I was able to break the "responsibility vs. slavery" issue
into three parts. Firstly, when a child is asked to do something for the household, if everyone takes
part in it then the child will not feel used. For example, if there's a party and you ask each child to
give up some time and do something, then it's regarded as a common effort. Even when it's
mundane household chores, if they are split with some calculation a child will generally do them
without resentment. For example, if the boys and girls in the family are on different school
schedules, and the boys help when they are home and the girls do their share when they're
available, then children can sense a fairness and won't complain.
Secondly, it's important to make children feel that they're not just givers but also receivers of the aid
that they are expected to contribute. For example, when you ask an older child to help the smaller
children with homework, you can also promise the older child that you'll help him with his school
work when the younger children are in bed and the house is quieter. This teaches the child that the
stronger help the weaker and the bigger help the smaller.
12 April 2013 – 2 Iyar 10

Thirdly, parents need to treat their children as children -- not as spouse replacements. A woman
can't say, "my husband comes home late and can't help me, so my teenagers will help me parent
instead." Many years ago when fathers went off to war or to work away from home they would tell
their young child that "you are now the man of the house" and "take care of your mother." A six year
old couldn't handle that kind of responsibility. Neither can a 16 year old today. A parent asking and
expecting a child to do an adult's job is taking advantage.
None of this negates the fact that we can expect our children to help out in times of crisis -- in times
of sickness, pregnancy, or tragedy, G-d forbid. But even at times like this, when a parent feels the
need to give extra responsibility to a child, it should not be done by dictating but rather as a request
and with explanation. A parent can tell the child, "I know it's not your responsibility, but this is the
help we need now." It's a chessed -- a kindness -- for the child to help the parent.
In conclusion, when we ask our children to help with something we must ask ourselves two
questions: 1) Whose job am I asking the child to do 2) Am I giving the child this job to teach
responsibility, or am I shirking my own responsibility A parent that can answer these two questions
by honestly saying that they are doing it for the child's sake will indeed be teaching their child
responsibility.
News from
YESHIVA COLLEGE PRIMARY SCHOOL
PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents,
A warm welcome to the second term of 2013. I hope that you all had a great and inspiring Pesach and that
you are well rested and ready for the new term!
It is with much pleasure that I welcome Mrs. Nathanson to our school. Mrs. Nathanson will be teaching
Grade 3V and I wish her much success in her new position.
On Monday we kicked off the term with a special assembly held in honour of Yom Hashoa! The children
gathered in the hall where Morah Shoshana told a story that highlighted the message of hope and
continuation of the Jewish nation. Six yartzeit candles were lit in memory of the 6 million Jews that
perished in the Holocaust. The children observed a minute’s silence and we ended off with the singing of
Hatikvah! It was a meaningful and inspirational morning. I thank Morah Shoshana for her words of hope
and encouragement.
On Wednesday and Thursday was Rosh Chodesh Iyar. In honour of Rosh Chodesh, we held an assembly
where the whole school davened Hallel together. The assembly was made very special with the launch of
our Sefer Torah Project. A family (who wish to remain anonymous) will be writing a Sefer Torah in honour
of their son’s impending Bar Mitzvah in 3 years’ time. Their intention is to use the Sefer Torah on the day
of their son’s Bar Mitzvah and thereafter to donate the Torah to the Israeli Army for the soldiers to “lein”
from during army service. The exciting element for our school is that during the course of this year, every
child in our Primary School will be given a chance to write a letter in this Sefer Torah with the Sofer in
charge, Yisroel Drutman. Yisroel was at our assembly where he explained the importance of the mitzvah of
writing a Sefer Torah and that by each child having a letter in the Torah it is as if each of them has
personally written a Torah. Both the Rosh Yeshiva Rabbi Tanzer and CEO Rabbi Perez were present at
the assembly and the Torah was started with both Rabbis writing their own letter.
After each child has written their letter, they will receive a certificate informing them of which letter, in which
word and which Parsha they own. They will also be given a “Sofer Kit” of a quilt, ink and piece of Klaf
(parchment). This project is truly a Kiddush Hashem and I am so proud to have Yeshiva Primary
participate in this great mitzvah.
Our assembly was further enhanced by a Dvar Torah from Rabbi Katz and a representative from the
Zionist Federation delivered a message to excite them for Yom Ha'atzmaut. Chodesh Tov to all. Well done
to our Rosh Chodesh raffle winners, Gavi Lipschitz and Ricky Sarakinsky.
Next week Tuesday is Yom Ha'atzmaut. Please note that we will be having a special programme with the
High School. School begins at 8:00am and ends at 12:15pm. No extra murals, teacher
related or sports. Children must please come to school dressed in blue and white clothes. Boys must
wear yamulkas and tzitzit and girls must have the correct length sleeves and skirts.
This term we will be having Parent/Teacher interviews. Yours teachers will be in contact with you shortly to
let you know all the details. As per the year planner, Tuesday 23 April and Monday 29 April are the dates
set aside for the interviews.
Please ensure that you have sent your child’s report folder back to the class teachers to be re-used again
for the 2 nd report.
Dear Parents
Welcome back to school!
Gorgeously painted pots and a "Barney" bench was the perfect welcome to a new term and herald the
beginnings of a garden makeover!
A warm and special welcome to Sara Urison and Taylor and Eva Flaum who have joined the 4 year old
unit. It is lovely to have you with us!
The children have settled so well back into school and the classrooms and playgrounds are full of the
sounds of happy, busy children
Our first week back at school has been jam-packed with activities pertaining to Yom Hazikaron and Yom
Ha'Atzmaut.
The colours of Israel were used in a variety of activities. Stamping, flag-making, blue and white
backgrounds, "Me" pictures, free painting and soldiers were just some of the creative, exciting and fun
activities covered this week.
Discussion rings were focused on Israel as well as counting the Omer.
Omer charts are in every classroom and the children count the Omer every day.
Songs of the Omer and Israel can be heard throughout the schools while a Rosh Chodesh picnic (in the
Nursery School) completed a busy and stimulating week.
YOM HA'ATZMAUT
We will celebrate Yom Ha'Atzmaut, on Tuesday, with fun, flags and food!
Some wonderful activities have been planned for the morning and the
different units will celebrate both together as well as individually.
Please dress your children in blue and white for the day.
School will start at 8 am on Tuesday and close at 12 noon. These times are
in keeping with the rest of the campus and are indicated on the school
calendar.
EgoliSquash - Help Me To Read Campaign!
WE NEED YOUR BOOKS!
Egolisquash is an outreach program that uses sport as a catalyst to positively
influence kids. More than 3000 learners from the Inner-city of Johannesburg,
Alexandra and Soweto have been empowered to break the cycle of poverty and
crime in our communities. We want every child in our program to be literate!
For many of our kids this is not easy as they encounter significant barriers
including poverty, stressful home circumstances and parents who themselves
lack basic literacy skills. Most of these kids do not have access to books other
than at school.
As part of our on-going work to increase literacy amongst disadvantaged kids,
Egolisquash is currently running a Help Me to Read Campaign, an appeal to the
wider community to donate books for our libraries that we have setup at our
centres. We need books for kids age: 8 – 19.
You can help make a difference in these kids’ lives and help them excel in their
academics by donating school books, story books, educational games and
dictionaries.
Donate books now and you could help make our nation more literate today!
Please drop books at
Boys High School
– Teresa Girls High School
– Dvora Primary School – Leanne
Nursery School / Play School
– please give to class teachers
arrange for collection.Visit our website: www.egolisquash.co.za OR
