Life’s a party. Enjoy!
“DARKENU”- the Yeshiva Way!
The Sefer Chovas Halevavos, the classic work written in the middle ages on the subject Jewish Ethics and
Philosophy, records the following anecdote:
“A tzaddik was once walking with his students in a field when they came upon a decaying dog’s carcass. The
students remarked at the odious offence, whereupon the sage responded: ‘But what white teeth he has!’ The
sage was teaching that the essence of lashon hara is not just to avoid gossiping and slandering other people;
rather at its core, it is more about not slandering Hashem’s world.
Tzaraas-type afflictions are supernatural occurrences. According to Rambam, all these afflictions – on the
person’s body, clothing or houses are Divine signs and punishments for lashon hara.
One of the key mitzvos is Kiddush Hashem – to publicise Hashem’s existence and kindnesses. Truly the entire
world, with every blade of grass, joins in that Divine symphony.
When we ‘talk up’ His world by finding all that is kind and beautiful and uplifting – we are making a Kiddush
Hashem, declaring His Glory through everything in creation. When we unfortunately get caught up in the
negatives, we are remonstrating with Him, faulting His world and even declaring it ungodly or unworthy. (Based
on a shiur of Rav Sheinberg.)
Imagine the scene…..The king has invited you to is party and is walking you through the grand event introducing
you to his friends, associates and loyals. As he guides you through the palace you begin passing snide remarks
about the palace, the décor, the guests and the food. Even at our own party we would probably avoid such a
guest. He would not be on the re-invite list.
The great challenge of lashon hara, then, is to believe in the beauty and kindness of life and to be constantly alert
to all that is precious and to Hashem’s kindness and wisdom. We need to remember that the King is leading us
graciously through His great banquet of Life. He is interested in our comments. He wants us to be happy at His
party.”
MENAHEL’S MICHTAV
It has been a very busy build-up to Yom HaAtzma’ut. It is wonderful to have our Matrics and Grade 11’s
back in full academic capacity! After the first “zeman” (term) ended with a strong “mishmar” (late night
learning) thanks to YiD and all who participated, Pessach was a welcome break. We had our first holiday
“Yarchei Kallah” series of shiurim (long ago it was customary to devote the major holidays of Pessach time
and Sukkot time to extra learning) and we ran a series of in-depth shiurim on the Mitzvah of remembering
Yetzi’at Mitzrayim based on “sugyot” in our current school gemara “Massechet Brachot”. Shkoyach in
particular to Ari Chipkin for his participation. I hope we will grow this learning programme come Sukkot
time!
Daily Divrei Torah have dealt with aspects of Sefirat HaOmer and our calendar dates. The question arises
how we can suspend customs of mourning that are perhaps a thousand years old to make way for our
most recent of Chagim An interesting comment by Rav Avraham Ibn Ezra, one of our classic Rishonim
on Chumash, provides a source that there is a Biblical obligation to celebrate days “when we return from
the lands of our enemies or we beat them in battle” (Bemidbar 10:10)!!! Accordingly, comparatively recent
low levels of mourning would obviously give way to comprehensive celebration!
We have had to digest a number of serious but uplifting days in the build-up to the festive Yom
HaAtzma’ut. Last Thursday we had a shiur kelali on the concept of Yom Hazikaron Lashoah Veligvurah as
a separate date, in Nissan, which the whole school attended. The Grade 10s, 11s and 12s then went to
Westpark Cemetary for the communal event and represented the school in a way we can be proud of.
Shkoyach gentlemen!
As we ushered in the new month of Iyar, we had an Avot uvanim led by YiD.
On Tuesday we had a school assembly where we screened Sharit Krengel’s “Machal 804” documentary
on the amazing achievements of the South African volunteers who fought in Israel’s War of Independence.
Four of our school’s grandparents were counted among those heroes. How proud we were to recognise
26 April 2012 - 4 lyar 4

the grandfathers of the Friedlands, Egdeses, Hodeses and Levins (Shochats)! We were also privileged to
hear from a number of parents of the school about their fathers who fought.
While we celebrate Yom HaAtzma’ut here, two of our students will attend one of the main national Yom
HaAtzma’ut events in Israel, the International Bible Quiz. Well done to Mathew Disler and Idan Horowitz
for representing South Africa. A special “shkoyach” to Idan for making it through to the final round of the
Diaspora quiz!
In further preparation for Yom HaAtzma’ut we had a special shiur by Rav Amittai to the senior school
where the Rav addressed the key halachik aspects of the festive day. YiD held a very moving Yom
Hazikaron “Tekess” to commemorate our fallen soldiers and victims of terror. As “we go to print” no doubt
we will be, please G-d, experiencing a wonderful Yom HaAtzma’ut celebration at school – details to follow.
On a sadder note we extend condolences to the Milsteins and the Blacks for your respective losses. May
Hashem console you amongst those who mourn for Zion and Jerusalem.
Shabbat Sha-lom, Mo’adim Lesimchah Lige’ulah sheleimah and enjoy the long weekend,
FROM THE DESK OF THE PRINCIPAL OF THE HIGH SCHOOLS
Dear parents
On Tuesday 24 th April 2012, we had a commemoration service, paying tribute to the heroic South African men and woman
who volunteered to go to Israel, to fight in the War of Independence in 1948.
As we all know, this was before Israel had the means to defend itself. All the Arab nations surrounding Israel had declared
war on the fledgling state. Because the British would not allow young men who had the potential to defend Israel to enter
Israel openly, these brave South Africans, some of whom were not Jewish, got to Israel by disguising their true intentions in
various ways.
We screened the incredible documentary 804, which was produced by one of the mothers of our school, Sharit Krengel. I,
for one, was absolutely spellbound by this wonderful production and learnt a great deal about this event in our history. As I
said when I concluded the program, I have obviously always been a proud Jew and a proud South African, but I have never
been more proud than I am now, having learnt about the selfless patriotism shown by the South Africans who acquitted
themselves so magnificently in this War of Independence.
It was clearly stated that without the exceptional experience, knowledge, commitment and expertise of the volunteers, the
outcome of the war might have been different.
We had a number of honoured guests at this program. It was attended by Sharit Krengel as well as a number of parents
and grandparents of the school, whose husbands and fathers were part of the South African group who defended Israel.
Mrs. Selma Friedland and her daughter- in- law, Trudy Friedland was there as Mrs. Friedland’s husband, Bernie, fought in
the war. Unfortunately Dr. Richard Friedland was overseas on Tuesday and could not attend, but we did have a video
which he made, in which he recorded an extremely moving tribute to his late father.
Mr. Johnny Egdes spoke on behalf of his mother Hazel and his sister and brother in law Dana and Anthony Druin. He
relayed most meaningfully his father Morris’s role in the war, as well as what he and the entire family has learnt from the
example he set.
Mrs. Joan Levin who was present with her mother Shirley Schachat, also held us all enthralled by her recollections of her
father Mokkie’s commitment to Israel in 1948. She also brought a number of photographs which had been taken at the
time.
Lastly, Dr. Robin Hodes told the assembly how, despite his father Lionel’s poor eyesight and severe asthma he was totally
committed to being accepted as part of the fighting force of Israel. He went so far as to memorize the eye chart used in the
eye test, in order not to be disqualified from serving in this war.
I would like to thank all our honoured guests for attending the commemoration and for adding to our understanding about
this important time in the history of the Jewish people and the Jewish state. I know that everyone who attended left with a
great deal more knowledge and pride in their Jewish and South African heritage.
Wishing everybody an enjoyable Yom Ha’atzmaut, a restful long weekend and wonderful Shabbos.
Warm regards
Denese Bloch
YESHIVA GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL
DEAN VECHESHBON
How holy in the Israeli flag There is nothing about it in the Torah or Gemara! Yet we do know it is
special. We learnt an insight from Rav Soloveichik that the flag actual has intrinsic holiness – not from the
same source that makes a Torah or Tefillin holy – but from a very different yet as real source: Jewish
blood! At the end of the Shulchan Aruch we will find the laws of mourning. Normally, there is a Mitzvah to
cleanse the deceased and bury him or her in clean shrouds. However Jews who are murdered because of
who they were are to buried in their bloodied garments in order to rouse passionate emotion over their
tragic murder. How much holy Jewish blood has been spilt because of this flag! Just like the blood
sanctifies those sullied garments, the blood of every Jewish soldier and citizen who has died because of
Israel sanctifies the flag!
This idea as well as many other ideas and programmes have constituted a very busy build-up to Yom
HaAtzma’ut, that has included our seniors – our Matrics and Grade 11’s (welcome back from exams!!!).
This required us to digest a number of serious but uplifting days in the build-up to the festive Yom
HaAtzma’ut. While the Grade 10s, 11s and 12s went to Westpark Cemetery for the communal Yom
Hashoah event, the Middle School had a shiur kelali on Yom Hazikaron Lashoah Veligvurah. I was so
impressed by the spirit of our students in all that pertained to Yom Hashoah. Students initiated a “supercharged”
Shalhevet evening learning programme in memory of the 6000000 which was so well attended.
Thank you to Rav Alexander for his input as well. Although the ceremony at Westpark was cut short as
the Heavens shed tears with us over what seemed like just the cemetery, so may voices commented that
we should have continued through the rain in memory of the “Kedoshim” of the Shoah. Shkoyach for this
comprehensive spirit which we can learn from and be proud of!
On Tuesday we had a school assembly where we screened Sharit Krengel’s “Machal 804” documentary
on the amazing achievements of the South African volunteers who fought in Israel’s War of Independence.
Moriyah in Yerushalayim gave shiur kelali and Morah Shlvie Friedman (nee Gordan, mazal tov!) also gave
a number of sessions. YiD held a very moving Yom Hazikaron “Tekess” to commemorate our fallen
soldiers and victims of terror. As “we go to print” no doubt we will be, please G-d, experiencing a
On a sadder note we extend condolences to the Lemmers for your loss. May Hashem console you
amongst those who mourn for Zion and Jerusalem.
Our Grade 8s have been very busy raising money for
“Reach for a Dream” patients with cancer (please buy your
tickets to guess and win the yummy containers of sweets!!!).
Our Grade 10 Tikkun team have been very busy promoting
“Walk the Talk”, this come hot on the heels of their recent
collection of treats for underprivileged children in “Alex”.
Shkoyach to everyone who has participated!
The following is a true story written by an educational psychologist and her experience on a
plane.
On a flight to Florida, I was preparing my notes for one of the parent-education seminars I
conduct as an educational psychologist.
The elderly woman sitting next to me explained that she was returning to Miami after having
spent two weeks visiting her six children, 18 grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren in
Boston.
Then she inquired what I did for a living.
I told her, fully expecting her to question me for free professional advice.
Instead she sat back, picked up a magazine and said, "If there's anything you want to know,
just ask me."
Dear Parents
I am sure you are looking very forward to the long weekend. Enjoy the well deserved rest and if you are travelling - go
safely and have a wonderful time.
It has been a short week. Monday we began our day with our regular Hallel assemblies. I have to say the children daven
so beautifully that it really fills my heart with much Nachas. Well done to Tamar Zimmerman from Grade 1 and Netanel
Levenstein from Grade 4 who won this month’s Rosh Chodesh Raffle. As usual Rabbi Katz gave a very deep message to
the children in between his theatrics which was combined with my acting abilities. Please ask your children to elaborate.
In honour of Yom Hazikaron the school gathered together for a minute silence and the lighting of a memorial candle in
honour of all our fallen soldiers defending our beloved Eretz Yisrael.
We return to school next Wednesday at regular times and regular extra mural timetable.
Have a great rest.
News from
YESHIVA COLLEGE PLAYSCHOOL
PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents
Our week has been jam-packed with activities pertaining to Yom Ha’Atzmaut.
Flags have been stencilled, crowns stamped, songs sung and an awareness of Israel created.
On Yom Ha’atzmaut itself, we have some exciting activities planned which will add a
special dimension to the morning.
In Parsha, we discussed brit milah. The children are generally fascinated with babies –
they see themselves as very big! – and so they thoroughly enjoyed the “story”.
Our first session aimed at strengthening the children’s core muscles, through exercises done with physio balls,
started this week. Challenging but so worthwhile, the children had a great time!
INSERVICE TRAINING
On Monday, the Playschool and Nursery School teachers attended training by Nicole Canin, a counselling
psychologist, on the subject, “Understanding Symptoms as a Means of Communication”. It was very interesting
and informative and we look forward to putting newly gained knowledge to good use.
LIBRARY BAGS
A letter was sent out earlier this week with regard to the home library programme.
As part of this programme, every child needs to have a library bag in which the book
is placed. These may be purchased from your child’s teacher at a cost of R25.
These bags will continue to be used during the course of Nursery School.
As part of an initiative of Second Innings School Project run by
the Chevra Kadisha (Johannesburg Jewish Helping Hand & Burial
Society), a group of women are helping to reinstate the Orange
Grove Primary School Library into a workable model.
Unfortunately the school has been unable to afford a librarian, with
the result that a lot of the existing book stock is in a very sorry state
indeed. Due to the ever escalating and prohibitive cost of new books,
replacing one for one is not a viable option. There are approximately
600 pupils attending the school, the majority of whom have displayed
a real enthusiasm to see their library’s shelves filled once again with
appealing reading matter. For many of the students, the school is
their only contact with books, - therefore we feel that this project is a
real priority.
We, therefore, would be extremely grateful if you have any children’s
books in good condition, especially for the foundation phase classes
(Grades 1-3) that you would be willing to donate .
Dear Yeshiva Parents
The Feed a Guard programme has been functioning for three years now thanks to the participation
of parents of the school and members of the Glenhazel campus shuls. I am really proud of the
generosity of our volunteers.
The security guards who look after our campus throughout the night while we are snuggled in our
warm cosy beds are deeply grateful for the hot meal they received nightly.
I am now looking for volunteers to assist us with continuing this project for this year.
Can you make supper for 2 security guards one night a
month
If you can please email me so I can include you on the roster.
Many thanks
