MESSAGE FROM THE OFFICE OF THE ROSH YESHIVA
04 November 2011 – 7 Cheshvan
NEWSLETTER NO. 34/11
Darkenu Lech Lecha
My father, My son
“DARKENU”- the Yeshiva Way!
Way back in the days of Enosh a fundamental error crept into the service of G-d. The Sages of that
generation developed a faulty theology, and Adam’s own son was one of those who erred. They
argued that since G-d created the stars and the heavenly bodies to lead the world and he placed
them on high and gave them honour, it is appropriate for man to praise them and to glorify them and
to honour them – and this honours the king himself.
Eventually this ‘innocent’ error took hold and people began to believe that the stars themselves had
power and they forgot about the King, and Avodah Zarah as it is known today became prevalent.
(Rambam.)
These philosophies swept the world without any protest; until Avraham Avinu looked at the stars
and pondered and thought. He realized there must be a Creator and Master of the Universe who
controls everything.
The question is, that as there were other great Sages and Tzaddikim in those times, including Shem
and Ever, why was Avraham Avinu alone in his brilliant analysis

Rabbi Leff suggests that Avraham had a unique ability to lay bare the lies and the confusion that
reigned. He ‘broke the idols’ – i.e. he showed that you cannot worship the sun on Sunday and the
moon on Monday and still have place in Shul on Shabbos. He recognized that you cannot ‘have
both’ – the idol simply must be destroyed. One G-d means wholehearted service to Him. It means
that you cannot allow confusion.
Thus, Avraham, above all, was the one to introduce the era of the Torah to the world.
Assuming Avraham as our model of educating and parenting means learning many skills – caring
and engaging with our environment. It also means looking and thinking and achieving clarity and
absolutism. It means empowering ourselves and our children with the confidence of 100% truth! A
truth that you can commit to and live by; one that inspires and encourages.
Such is the legacy of Avraham “our Father” – to whom we look for counsel and direction in the
service of Chinuch.
THE DESK OF THE PRINCIPAL OF THE HIGH SCHOOLS
As we move closer to the final year end exams I would encourage all learners to dedicate a great deal of time to
their studies. However, it is also very important that they remember to eat well and exercise, in order to achieve
the best results possible.
On Wednesday 02 November 2011, our Grade 8 boys had the wonderful opportunity of visiting Denel Aviation.
Justin Shulman, the father of one of our learners, Alon Shulman, made it possible for our learners to have this
wonderful opportunity. Not only were they able to view and sit in various types of aircraft including helicopters and
jet fighters, but they were also given a presentation pack containing refreshments, pamphlets on Denel and a cap.
On their return to school, I spoke to some of the boys, and all agreed that this was a most wonderful and amazing
experience.
On behalf of all the Grade 8’s and Mr Kriek who accompanied them, I would like to thank Mr Shulman for making it
possible for our boys to enjoy this amazing outing and for the extraordinary generosity they were shown.
One of our Grade 11 learners, Michi Azaraf has gone to New York to take part in the New York Marathon.
Michi is part of the ORT JET team which has raised money for the charitable work done by ORT JET.
The marathon takes place on Sunday 6 th November and we wish Michi good luck and congratulate him for
representing Yeshiva College and ORT JET.
I would also like to wish Dani Flaum of Grade 9, a hearty Mazeltov on being awarded Gauteng Colours for
Gymnastics. We are extremely proud of her.
Wishing everybody a wonderful Shabbos.
YESHIVA GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL
DEAN VECHESHBON
The first “perek” of Parshat Lech Lecha introduces us to Avram, destined to become Avraham
Avinu. It is interesting to note that in this one chapter, Avram is constantly aware of his
surroundings: whether it is the cultural influences of the “Kena’ani” environment, security
arrangements when he journeys to Egypt and the availability of natural resources when he returns.
Rav Hutner pointed out that while Hashem gives us Mitzvoth, we are obligated by the Avot to follow
their Middot! One of the first lessons from Avraham Avinu therefore is being sensitive to our
surroundings. In light of this, it turns out to be a very appropriate Parshah to start our renewed Litter
Campaign! I must comment the Girls’ High that from what I have seen, there is a commendable
sensitivity to the cleanliness of our environment. Keep it up!
This renewed effort dovetails with our efforts to
recycle whatever we can. We started with paper
many years ago when Global Warming first became
a hot topic and since then have expanded to
plastics, glass and metal (tins etc.). Some Grade 7’s
show us how it is done! (There are two other colourcoded
bins by the Play School – so please feel free
to drop off your “recyclables”!!!)
A belated really exciting mazal tov to Meg and Rav Natan Alexander on the birth of their son. We
wish Meg and jnr. well and “besha’ah tovah” for the Brit! (We had already gone to print when we
heard the wonderful news last week!)
Mrs. Gerson has been really busy bringing guests to the school to address our various grades on a
number of very important issues. FAMSA did a programme with the grade 7’s while Dr. Joanne
Abrams addressed Grade 8, 9 and 11 (“the rest of the school”!). Thank you so much for your time –
we so appreciate it!
Looking back to other highlights from the end of last week, we had an awesome Rosh Chodesh.
YID treated us to doughnuts. Civvies Day gave us an opportunity to enjoy practical “tzniut” in are
“out-of-school” clothes (even though we were in school – all a bit confusing!). Everyone looked
great! A huge thank you to Rivki, Rachel and the prefects for their awesome assistance in this.
(Ladies, remember your prefects have your best interests at heart – tzniut is not a daily inspection –
it’s something to enjoy!) The hugest “shkoyach” to the entire Grade 11 class for leading the most
awesome Hallel! Grade 11 was also treated to a shiur by Rav Donny Schreiber, a visiting Rav from
the Gush.
late Lindi Lederman z”l. This will culminate in a “Hazakarah” ceremony in our Beit Midrash next
Sunday evening. Please see the notice at the end of this article.
It was very exciting to see the Matrics again. Whew – this is it… finals!!! Behatzlachah – we know
you will all do so very well “be’ezrat Hashem”! We had an opportunity to hand out a Tefillah award
to a matric whose Tefillah has been inspirational! Kol hakavod Yudi Leibovitz!
The collection for “you-know-who’s” (not Voldermort!) birthday is going well. Shkoyach to all who
have contributed so far. Those who still would like to contribute – please you’re your money to any
Grade 9 student. Shkoyach!!!
Good luck to all those who are studying for the first round of the Bible Quiz. The first round will take
PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents
This past week was our annual Grade 2 Siyum. The children recited some of their Tefilot that they
say in davening as well as singing Pesukim from Parshat Lech Lecha. Divrie Torah were said by
the children and then the morning concluded with a parent/child craft. As the Grade 2’s are starting
a theme of leaning about Safrut, it was fitting that the craft was beading a Mezuza cover. It was a
real Kiddush Hashem and a wonderful morning.
Thank you to all our Grade 2 Kodesh and General Studies teachers for their hard work and to the
class moms for preparing the most beautiful tea. Of course, a heartiest Mazaltov to the learners -
you have made us all proud.
This week, Monday the 7 th November is the Inter Jewish General Knowledge Quiz. I would like to
wish our team the best of luck. Well done boys for the accomplishment thus far. You have already
brought us much pride. Please join us in the Primary School Hall at 19h30 to support our team.
There is lots of lost property - there will be tables of lost property on display outside the Primary
School Office this coming Tuesday and Wednesday - 8/9 November. Please come and check if
anything belongs to your children.
Sports Photos. These will be displayed outside Mrs Soffer’s office from Monday 8 November. The
cost of the photos are R30.00 each. Order forms will be available from the office if you wish to
order.
YESHIVA COLLEGE PLAYSCHOOL
PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents
The children have been very busy, this week, creating pictures that will eventually be put together to
make their own books of Bereishit. The children are using a variety of mediums in their artwork
and absolute delight was shown as little hands sank into thick "gooey" paint in order to create a gorgeous
turquoise sea! We are teaching Bereishit in a number of ways and we will be introducing drumming, next
week, as one of our tools. We have also incorporated our "Science and Discovery" ring into our teaching
of Bereishit and as we discuss each day with the children, some wonderful offshoots of information are
passed on to the children.
In Parsha, we spoke about Avraham and the multitudes of stars and his descendants. Stars on the ceiling
and matching each child to a star added an extra and special dimension to our Parsha ring.
NURSERY SCHOOL VISITS
Our visits to the Nursery School got off to a great start! The walk to the Nursery School was an outing in
itself and the children thoroughly enjoyed the new and exciting environment.
INSERVICE TRAINING
On Monday, the teachers attended a thought provoking talk by Gavin Keller. The topic was that of "Brain
Processing and Sensory Integration". It was interesting and informative and provided us with a fresh
perspective on learning.
PUPPET SHOW
On Monday 14 November, we will be treated to Machteld's magical brand of storytelling. Her puppets and
sets are always a source of much fascination to the children and her amazing skill with puppets
sweeps her little audience into the action.
Wealth & the Occupy Wall Street Movement
by Rabbi Benjamin Blech
Rich people are not the enemy.
I wish the Occupy Wall Street movement would be a little clearer about what they're protesting.
Even as it continues to grow and gain followers outside of New York, with satellite protests in more than 60
American cities as it threatens to go global, the demonstrators still haven't directly identified their enemy.
And before I can make up my mind whether or not I support them, I think they need to tell us whether this
is more about money or morality.
What troubles me is that much of the anger of the protesters seems to be fuelled by a sentiment about
wealth that Judaism long ago rejected. There have always been people who believed that spirituality
demands that we forsake materialism. Rich people are wicked by definition. Accumulating a great deal of
money is a sin.
But from a Jewish perspective, wealth is not ignoble; it presents us with precious opportunities. When
Abraham first discovered God and gave the gift of monotheism to the world, we're told that he was divinely
rewarded with prosperity. The philosopher Philo had it right when he summed up the Jewish sentiment in
these words: "Money is the cause of good things to a good man, of evil things to a bad man."
From time immemorial Jews have recognized that their mission in life is to improve the world. They were
also realistic enough to realize that a great deal of good they were required to perform on this Earth can
only be fulfilled with adequate financial resources. Helping the poor, assisting the community and its
needs, building synagogues and houses of study, and supporting friends, family, neighbours – all these
mitzvahs require money in order to properly perform them.
In a beautiful Midrash, we’re told that when Moses was commanded to count the Jews by means of their
contributing a half Shekel, Moses was baffled. He didn't understand. Then God showed him “a coin of fire"
and his mind was put at rest.
What was so difficult to grasp that caused Moses to be confused Did Moses need to be shown an actual
coin before he could understand the meaning of half a Shekel And what was the point of showing him a
coin of fire
The rabbinic commentary is profound and beautiful. The reason Moses was perplexed was because he
couldn't believe that for counting Jews something so seemingly non-spiritual and materialistic would be
used. How could money play a role in defining Jews and holiness
The answer was to show him a coin of fire. Fire has two seemingly contradictory properties. Fire destroys,
but it also creates. Fire may burn, but it can also cook, warm, and serve the most beneficial purposes.
Money and fire are related. Wealth may destroy those who possess it but it can also be the source of the
greatest blessing. Precisely because it has this quality, it becomes doubly holy. When we choose to use a
potentially destructive object in a positive and productive manner, we have learned the secret of true
holiness.
4 November 2011 – 7 Cheshvan 15

Twice a day Jews recite the line that defines our faith. "Hear O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.”
The words that follow define how we are supposed to express that belief through our actions. The original
Hebrew from the Torah is often mistranslated, "with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your
might." The more correct reading for the last phrase is "and with all your wealth."
Having a great deal of money isn't a problem. Not knowing what to do with it is what causes almost all of
our difficulties. And spending it correctly is the challenge we face throughout our lifetimes that will best
determine whether we can face our final judgment with confidence.
“Show me your checkbook stubs,” said the noted psychologist, Erich Fromm, “and I’ll tell you everything
about yourself.” Self-indulgence or selflessness Wine, women, and song or charitable works Hedonism
or helping others Forsaking God because you no longer need Him or feeling more spiritually connected
out of gratitude for your good fortune
For those whose crusade against Wall Street is synonymous with a vendetta against all those with wealth,
there needs to be recognition of the great good accomplished by many of those who've been blessed with
prosperity. Just because someone has "made it" doesn't make him a villain. To add the adjective "filthy" to
the word rich in signs hoisted by Occupy Wall Street protesters is to unfairly castigate those who God may
have rewarded because they're wise enough to work on His behalf in creating a better world.
We could all learn much from Michael Bloomberg, the self-made billionaire founder of the Bloomberg
financial information firm and New York Mayor, who for two years in a row was the leading individual living
donor in the United States, according to The Chronicle of Philanthropy. He recently said he intends to give
away most of his fortune, because “the best measure of a philanthropist is that the check he leaves to the
undertaker bounces.” And that will insure that he dies a very happy man.
Capitalism isn't only about accumulating more and more money. Just a few years ago TIME named Bill
and Melinda Gates as its “Persons of the Year.” Gates, a Wall Street superstar, was acknowledged as one
of the most influential people in the country – not because of how much money he has but because of how
much of it he is willing to give away. He came to the conclusion that greed isn’t meant to be our goal in life.
Having made more money than he will ever need, he has one more vision that drives him. He would love
to convince world business leaders that being socially responsible isn’t just altruism but sound business
practice. Gates says he has learned that greed is self-defeating. It destroys the very people who make it
their god.
Today Gates is spearheading a drive to get the super wealthy to publicly commit themselves to giving
away most of their fortunes for charitable purposes – and Warren Buffett, chairman of Berkshire Hathaway
Inc. and one of the world’s wealthiest men, among others has signed on to this noble endeavour.
When the Occupy Wall Street crowd talks about cleaning up corruption, when it points a finger at all those
whose financial recklessness plunged the country into the Great Recession, when it gives voice to the
anger we all feel at the perpetrators of highly immoral business practices that hurt millions of innocent
victims – for all of these righteous causes they deserve our unqualified thanks.
It's only when they confuse anyone who is wealthy with the enemy that I think we need to remind them that
just as much as the poor don't deserve to be despised for their poverty, the rich don't deserve to be hated
simply because they have money.
