NEWSLETTER NO. 12/13
The concept of holiness according to the Torah does not demand that everyone become an ascetic,
withdrawing from life, society and civilization. Every single person can and is required to become holy – it
is not reserved for the philosophers. The Torah gives us the recipe: “You shall be holy for holy am I
Hashem, your G-d. Every man, your mother and father, shall you revere and my Shabbos shall you
observe ……..”. By channeling the entire normal human experience, with attention to the ‘small’ things,
according to the law of Hashem’s morality, one achieves holiness.
Rambam explains that the concept of holiness is not limited to the observance of any particular Mitzvos.
Rather, holiness demands that one’s approach to all aspects of life be governed by moderation –
especially in permitted areas.
One who observes only the letter of the law can easily become a “naval birshut Hatorah” – a degenerate
with the license of the Torah”. Such a person can punctiliously observe the minutiae of the law whilst
allowing himself unlimited self-indulgence, gluttony and licentiousness – all with ‘license’.
The Torah calls on us to “Kadesh atzmecha bemutar lach” – Sanctify yourself in what is permitted to you.”
Our challenge as people and parents is more than just technical compliance with the law. Rather, we
need to strive to create a life environment – for ourselves and our children – of drawing closer to spiritual
values – to Hashem, by creating a ceiling on our worldly needs.
More is not always better, and often one achieves a greater peace of mind and spiritual well-being simply
by applying the rule that less is more. This discipline creates a freedom which will allow one to pursue
spiritual values.
MENAHEL’S MICHTAV
Dear Friends,
What a rollercoaster of a week it has been! We began with Yom Hazikaron on Sunday evening and
Monday, which gave way for the fantastic celebration of Yom Ha’atzmaut on Monday evening and
Tuesday. The commemoration of Yom Hazikaron was incredibly powerful in both the community and
school events and Yom Ha’atzmaut was then celebrated in phenomenal style throughout Johannesburg.
Being my first Yom Ha’atzmaut outside of Israel for a number of years, I was so overwhelmed to see how
deeply and enthusiastically the community in South Africa celebrates this incredibly special day for the
Jewish People.
Here are some snaps from the past few days…
Yom Hazikaron School Ceremony (Brilliant and moving programme run by YiD team)
For the first time we, as the school, ran a fantastic Yom Haatzmaut Learning and Activites Programme for
the entire campus. It was well attended and a great experience for all those that took part – thank you to all
those who joined us...
19 April 2013 – 9 Iyar
4

Yom Haatzmaut Day began with a beautiful Tefilla in the Big Shul, where the entire school from Grade 1
up joined the school for a wonderful Hallel in honour of Yom Ha’atzmaut.
The Boys’ High School then continued with a fantastic breakfast organized by YiD, which included a
special quiz, cool videos, a Dvar Torah by Rav Natan Alexander, ending off with a special video message
that we recorded from all the boys to Sam Cohen, who competed in the International Bible Quiz in Israel.
Sam did incredibly well to get into the international finals, competing with the top 15 contestants from all
over the world! Well done Sam – you have brought so much nachas to your family and school. We then
continued with a phenomenal parade and march for the whole school through Glenhazel – led by vibey
music and a live band!
19 April 2013 – 9 Iyar
Baruch Hashem, we proudly waved the flag of our homeland, Eretz Yisrael, in incredible style!
In this vein, we wish hatzlacha raba to the contestants from our school taking part in the first round of the
Israel Quiz today (Thursday) – we’re sure you’ll do us so proud as you deepen your love for our nation and
our land through passionate and committed learning about our modern state - Medinat Yisrael.
This week’s Parsha, Acharei-Mot, instructs us regarding the service of the Kohen Gadol on Yom Kippur.
There are some interesting issues that arise in regards to our understanding of evil in the world when we
investigate the subject of the ‘Seir l’Azazel’ - which forms part of the Avodah of Yom Kippur. Rav Aviner
writes in his commentary this week that while on Yom Kippur we get a slight glimpse into how even evil
forms a part of Hashem’s grand plan for the world , (there is nothing that exists outside of Hashem) we
cannot and must not operate on this level in our day-to-day lives. In our practical lives, we are to use our
minds to discern between good and bad and constantly find ways to choose good over bad – that which is
right over that which is evil. I shared this with the boys at line-up when bringing up the terrible tragedy that
took place this week in Boston, in the United States. Many were injured and some lost their lives in this
terrible act of evil. We hope and pray that those who were injured recover speedily and that the families of
the bereaved should be able to find comfort somehow as time goes on. We stood for a moment of silence
at line-up to share in the pain of our fellow human beings.
So this week really was a rollercoaster of emotions – from Yom Hazikaron to Yom Ha’atzmaut and then to
learn of this tragedy in the United States.
To end off on an incredibly joyous note though, we wish Gilad Friedman, the head of YiD, our experiential
department, a huge mazeltov on his engagement to Tracy Mayef this week! May they be zocheh to build a
bayit ne’eman b’Yisrael (b’Yisrael!)
We also wish the Grade 8s an incredible time on their Shabbaton this week in a new and exciting
Shabbaton Venue in Magaliesburg! Rav Zevi Wineberg will be joining them and we are sure they will have
a phenomenal time! Enjoy!
Shabbat Shalom,
FROM THE DESK OF THE PRINCIPAL OF THE HIGH SCHOOLS
Dear parents
Yom Hazikaron is held annually on 4 Iyar to commemorate the fallen soldiers of the IDF and the
victims of terror at the hands of those who are anti-Israel and anti the Jewish People in general.
On Monday, 15 th April 2013, Yeshiva College held a ceremony to commemorate Yom Hazikaron.
Over 22500 soldiers have fallen protecting Jews since the dream of the establishment of the State
of Israel. In addition, over 4000 Israeli citizens have fallen at the brutal hands of terrorists. The
ceremony which was organised by the YiD department was extremely moving and enlightening. The
learners were totally captivated as the Israeli flag was lowered to half- mast. One of the our learners
then lit a yortzeit candle and we davened for the IDF and Israel. This was followed by the reciting of
tehilim. Chazan Chrysler then sang el maale rachamim and we said Yizkor. The ceremony was
concluded with a very enthusiastic singing of Hatikva. We remembered and honoured those who
have fallen, so that we as Jews can feel more secure no matter where we live.
Tuesday 16 th April was a day of great celebration after the sombre tone of Yom Hazikaron. Yom
Ha’atzmaut at Yeshiva College started with davening at 8.00 a.m. in the main Shul. Our YiD
department ran a programme for both the Boys’ and Girls’ High Schools. Thereafter all the schools,
other than the nursery school, came together for a parade that started from the entrance of the
school, went into Ridge Rd and around and then back into the school through the Mikveh gate.
Most of our learners went to Gold Reef City where there was a communal celebration of Yom
Ha’atzmaut. The report back that we have had from our learners is that they had a wonderful time
and that the entire day was a great success.
A reminder that our first General Studies Parents Evening for Grade 7 – 9 Boys, will be taking place
on Tuesday 23 rd April at 16h30 – 19h30.
On Thursday 25 th April 2013 at 16h30 – 19h30 we will be having the Parents Evening for Grade 10
& 11 Boys.
Wishing everybody a wonderful Shabbos.
HEAD GIRLS’ PAGE
As kids, we always took the State of Israel for granted. It was where we
spent Pesach holidays and visited family.
But now, as we reach the end of our school career and the prospect of a
gap year in the Holy Land awaits us, we have developed a new
understanding and appreciation of the miracle that the State really is.
Against the back drop of the very moving Yom Hashoah ceremony last
Sunday and after hearing the compelling story of a Holocaust survivor, we
can see how pivotal the establishment of Eretz Yisrael truly is to the
existence of the Jewish people. Yom Haatzmaut is a day to celebrate this
miracle and it’s no longer merely a trip to Gold Reef City waving Israeli
flags. Rather, it has become a meaningful experience where we
acknowledge our past, appreciate our present, and look forward to our
future in the land filled with milk and honey.
We wish all the matrics the best of luck for first prelims. Do all the past
papers you can!
How Parents Can Keep Up With Technology
By: Denise Rowden
As a parent, it can be hard to keep up with all the social networking sites out there. When my kids were in
their early teens, it seemed that every time I got a handle on the various social media sites they used, they
would be on to the next new thing. When my son was in middle school, it was all about Myspace. Then
Youtube became big and “everyone” was posting videos of skateboarding face plants and other death
defying acts. Next there was MyYearbook, with Facebook and Twitter soon following. Skype was
introduced somewhere in there, but it took a while to catch on. With the advent of Android and I-phones,
and the subsequent available apps, it seems the social networking world is growing exponentially.
I was reading an article recently which likened Facebook to a chaperoned dance. The perspective was that
even though kids have Facebook accounts, most of their actual social interactions are being done on other
sites and apps that can’t be monitored as easily by parents as Facebook can.
The truth is, this generation is more plugged in than any previous generation ever was. They can find out
anything about anything with simply a touch of a button or a swipe across a touch screen. Many of their
social interactions are conducted via cell phone or computer. Where you and I might have met after school
and talked about what we were going to be doing this weekend, kids can talk to people in the next town,
the next state and even the next country without leaving their rooms.
Quite awe-inspiring if you ask me. Also, quite scary, because it brings to the surface how little you may
actually know about what your kid is doing or who they may be talking to.
So, what can a parent do in the face of all of this technology? What can you do to keep your kids safe?
Step 1) I think the first step may be accepting the fact you’re not always going to know where your kid is or
what he is doing. As scary as it may feel to admit this, you’re not always going to know who they are
talking to. If you think back to when you were a teen, can you honestly say your parents knew where you
were 24/7? While some may be able to answer “yes,” the vast majority of us won’t.
Step 2) Once you accept that inevitability, you can start focusing on where you have the most control: the
skills you teach your child and how you respond to his choices. Think about how to set limits, coach your
child through difficult situations and, when they make a mistake, problem solve ways they can handle a
situation better in the future.
12

Step 3) Familiarize yourself every now and then with what’s new in the tech world so you’re not caught
unawares when something new comes on the scene. It’s also OK to limit the amount of time they spend in
front of a screen, whether that is TV, computer, iPad, iPod or cell phone screen.
Step 4) Sit down with your child and talk about all of this technology — the good, the bad, the cool and the
not so cool. Role model how to use this technology appropriately. And, though you may talk about
instances of kids using this technology inappropriately as a way to start a conversation, try to remember
there also are a lot of kids who do use it appropriately.
The most important piece in all of this is you — though I know there are times it may not feel that way. It
helps to keep in mind the ultimate goal of parenting: helping your child become a successful adult by
teaching him the skills to enable him to make well-thought-out choices. Parenting is a tough job. But, then
again, so is growing up. Understand your child is going to make mistakes and bad choices. Help him use
those choices as the learning tools they can be.
News from:
YESHIVA COLLEGE PRE-PRIMARY SCHOOL
PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents
We have had the most amazing week!
Our week started with a visit by a young South African - Daniel Jacobson - who served in the Israeli army.
Affiliated to the organisation, "Friends of the IDF", Daniel spoke to the four year old, five year old and
Grade R units in honour of Yom HaZikaron. The children were fascinated by this "real" soldier and some
very pertinent and "cute" questions were asked, all of which Daniel answered so good-naturedly! Learning
the correct way to march and salute was, of course, a favourite part of the visit.
Yom Ha'Atzmaut celebrations started with a campus/Mizrachi function on Monday night. The Nursery
School was an absolute hive of activity as children busied themselves with the variety of activities on offer.
It was wonderful to have so many of our children with us as well as visitors from other schools.
19 April 2013 – 9 Iyar
Blue balloons, flags and streamers greeted our children, on Tuesday morning, as
they arrived at school for a morning of fun and
treats. From Playschool to Grade R, the
fun and activity never stopped!
Our Playschool children enjoyed a Yom Ha'Atzmaut themed music and movement ring as well as a
dramatised story of a visit to Israel. The 4's and 5's marched and danced in the Nursery School garden
with Morah Ita while the Grade R's joined the Primary and High Schools for Hallel and the march.
Dressed in blue and white; waving flags; marching, dancing and singing; our children filled our school with
the most incredible warmth and vibe!
Delicious falafel in pita was served and eaten with much relish in a picnic
in the garden. Taking home either a blue or white balloon and a cookie
was the perfect ending to an incredible day at school!
EgoliSquash - Help Me To Read Campaign!
WE NEED YOUR BOOKS!
Egolisquash is an outreach program that uses sport as a catalyst to positively
influence kids. More than 3000 learners from the Inner-city of Johannesburg,
Alexandra and Soweto have been empowered to break the cycle of poverty and
crime in our communities. We want every child in our program to be literate!
For many of our kids this is not easy as they encounter significant barriers
including poverty, stressful home circumstances and parents who themselves
lack basic literacy skills. Most of these kids do not have access to books other
than at school.
As part of our on-going work to increase literacy amongst disadvantaged kids,
Egolisquash is currently running a Help Me to Read Campaign, an appeal to the
wider community to donate books for our libraries that we have setup at our
centres. We need books for kids age: 8 – 19.
You can help make a difference in these kids’ lives and help them excel in their
academics by donating school books, story books, educational games and
dictionaries.
Donate books now and you could help make our nation more literate today!
Please drop books at
Boys High School – Teresa
Girls High School – Dvora
Primary School – Leanne
Nursery School / Play School
– please give to class teachers
