Baruch Hashem, we proudly waved the flag of our homeland, Eretz Yisrael, in incredible style!
In this vein, we wish hatzlacha raba to the contestants from our school taking part in the first round of the
Israel Quiz today (Thursday) – we’re sure you’ll do us so proud as you deepen your love for our nation and
our land through passionate and committed learning about our modern state - Medinat Yisrael.
This week’s Parsha, Acharei-Mot, instructs us regarding the service of the Kohen Gadol on Yom Kippur.
There are some interesting issues that arise in regards to our understanding of evil in the world when we
investigate the subject of the ‘Seir l’Azazel’ - which forms part of the Avodah of Yom Kippur. Rav Aviner
writes in his commentary this week that while on Yom Kippur we get a slight glimpse into how even evil
forms a part of Hashem’s grand plan for the world , (there is nothing that exists outside of Hashem) we
cannot and must not operate on this level in our day-to-day lives. In our practical lives, we are to use our
minds to discern between good and bad and constantly find ways to choose good over bad – that which is
right over that which is evil. I shared this with the boys at line-up when bringing up the terrible tragedy that
took place this week in Boston, in the United States. Many were injured and some lost their lives in this
terrible act of evil. We hope and pray that those who were injured recover speedily and that the families of
the bereaved should be able to find comfort somehow as time goes on. We stood for a moment of silence
at line-up to share in the pain of our fellow human beings.
So this week really was a rollercoaster of emotions – from Yom Hazikaron to Yom Ha’atzmaut and then to
learn of this tragedy in the United States.
To end off on an incredibly joyous note though, we wish Gilad Friedman, the head of YiD, our experiential
department, a huge mazeltov on his engagement to Tracy Mayef this week! May they be zocheh to build a
bayit ne’eman b’Yisrael (b’Yisrael!)
We also wish the Grade 8s an incredible time on their Shabbaton this week in a new and exciting
Shabbaton Venue in Magaliesburg! Rav Zevi Wineberg will be joining them and we are sure they will have
a phenomenal time! Enjoy!
Shabbat Shalom,
