A message from Mr. Piperato
Dear Parents and Guardians:
Welcome back for another outstanding
year! Students have returned
to a clean building, an energized
faculty and staff, and a school
year full of unlimited opportunities.
As always, we expect great
things from Emmaus High School
students, and this year’s student
body is sure to exceed our expectations.
For the 2010-2011 school year, the
administration, faculty, and staff will
continue our focus on making
Emmaus High School a studentcentered
building. Students will
again be given opportunities to participate
in the decision making process,
and faculty and staff will continue
working on instruction that
meets the needs of all students. In
addition to moving our instruction
towards project-based learning, we
will continue the process of training
our faculty and staff in Restorative
Practices, a hands-on approach that
holds students accountable to high
expectations, while providing them
the necessary support. Because we
view ourselves as an outstanding
high school, we will always strive to
improve our instructional practices
and create an organization that
brings the best out of every child
and adult.
Over the past year, the Ninth Grade
Team has collected and examined
data to determine the best transitional
program for our incoming
freshmen. We have surveyed parents,
interviewed student focus
groups, analyzed our students’
performance data, and reviewed
current research. This year we will
survey our teachers and begin planning
the action steps necessary to
develop an academic program that
provides incoming freshmen with an
optimal amount of support and
structure. The team will consider
our ninth graders’ academic, social,
and emotional needs when recommending
changes to the faculty at
large. Helping students transition
from middle school to high school
continues to be a concern throughout
our country, and the Emmaus
High School faculty and staff are
committed to finding a better way
that works well in East Penn. Stay
tuned for more information as we
develop our plan for the future and
ask for your valued input.
As always, please feel free to
contact us if you have any questions
or concerns. If you have an issue
related to your child’s class, please
contact the teacher directly. If you
have other questions or concerns,
you should contact your child’s
guidance counselor or grade level
assistant principal. If you are not
satisfied at either level, please feel
free to contact me at 610-965-1650.
Thank you for your ongoing support.
Sincerely,
David F. Piperato (Mr. Pip)
Principal
ask for your patience as our District Office continues to process the overwhelming
number of applications that were received throughout the district.
Home Access Center (HAC) is a web based application that allows authorized parents and/or
guardians access to their child’s school information. In order to access HAC a user needs a working
computer, Internet access and a web browser.
Home Access Center can allow access to information such as: demographics, medical, transportation,
contacts, schedule, attendance, discipline, Interim Progress Reports, report cards and live
gradebook.
If you have already received a login and password for an East Penn student, you will not need to
complete any further registration material.
REMINDERS - Procedures for Early Dismissal
In an effort to ensure the continued safety and security of our students, we follow strict
guidelines for the early dismissal of students.
A student must bring a note to the Attendance Office prior to homeroom for an early dismissal.
This note should contain the student’s full name, student’s ID number, date and time
of early dismissal, and reason for early dismissal. The note must be signed by the parent/
guardian. Please make arrangements with your child as to where to meet for pick up. If this
procedure is followed, it’s not necessary for the parent/guardian to come to the Attendance
Office to sign out the student.
We understand that at times an appointment may be made last minute by the parent/
guardian, or there may be a family emergency resulting in the student needing to be dismissed
early. Should emergencies occur, the parent/guardian must come to the Attendance
Office to sign out the student. To ensure the safety of our students, we will ask for photo
identification. Please be advised that this method for early dismissal should only be used in
last minute and emergency cases.
Please note that phone calls for early dismissals are not accepted.
A Letter from the
Anthony Gulotta,
President
The opening days for seniors have been deemed a success. The first days are a
harbinger of more good to come. The 2010-2011 school year will feature some extraordinary
opportunities. With privileges such as late arrival and early dismissal, seniors can center their focus
on their core academic courses, college preparations, and the recreation that accompanies
twelfth grade.
Multiple memorable events are scheduled for the future. Senior Breakfast will be held on Friday,
October 15th. Tickets will be available for purchase starting October 4th. With the purchase of tickets,
students will be guaranteed a t-shirt, mug, and hearty breakfast. The breakfast will allow students
to engage with friends and ignite their school spirit for the homecoming football game. The
senior ball is scheduled for Saturday, May 21. The ball will be held at The Palace.
In order to reduce the ticket cost for the ball, several fundraisers will be distributed to all seniors.
The more money the class raises, the lower ticket prices drop. The first fundraiser, "Enjoy the City,"
will be given to students in early October. Senior officers encourage all students to participate.
The cabinet is composed of President Anthony Gulotta; Vice President Brittany Naida; Secretary
Jennifer Pytlewski; Treasurer Patrick Woods; and Historian Shannon Doughty. The officers
are prepared and enthusiastically welcome the upcoming school year. The twelfth grade year
should be both fun and safe.
Key Club News
Key Club International is a global organization designed to promote volunteering
and service to communities in need. With a non-profit mission to assist the
community in any and all of its humanitarian efforts, the Emmaus High School
sector works in conjunction with the Emmaus Kiwanis Club to remain active in
its honorable cause. Projects in recent years include Hearts for Haiti, Lehigh
Valley Cops N’ Kids and Pasta for Pennies Fundraiser for The Leukemia and
Lymphoma Society.
Over the summer, Key Club was relatively quiet, but our outstanding treasurer, Elizabeth Smolinski,
helped autistic children play softball at the Miracle League and received an Angel’s bracelet. With
the start of the new school year, the officers have been planning new activities and methods for the
improvement of the club. We organized a table for the club fair at freshmen orientation and will do
the stadium cleanups after Friday night home football games during the months of September and
October. In addition, Key Club will be decorating two scarecrows this year with different themes for
Halloween and will put them up at the triangle in Emmaus.
Our meetings are held every Thursday after school at 2:45 in cafeteria 1 with complimentary
snacks. For further information, please contact any of the officers or see one of the advisors, either
Mrs. Wells or Mrs. Teles-Carl in Room 365. We look forward to another enjoyable and rewarding
year of service and commitment.
Math Contests
During the month of September, all teachers in the math department had
sign-up forms for the Pennsylvania Math League Club. All club members
will be taking part in our two major contests - Pennsylvania Math League
and the American Math Competition (AMC).
The Pennsylvania Math League contests are six half-hour tests given during the school day once a
month from October to March. The AMC is a 75 minute test given during school once a year in
February. The content for both tests is primarily algebra and geometry, with occasional questions in
probability, trigonometry, sequences, and logarithms. All math contests require logic and reasoning
beyond the usual math curriculum, so that students who join Math League as freshmen and sophomores
benefit greatly from several years of attempting problems and studying the solutions.
Students in the Math Contest Club will receive information on other competitions throughout the
school year. Teams have been sent to local university contests at Princeton, Bucknell, Muhlenberg,
Millersville, and Lehigh University. Advanced Calculus classes take part in a Calculus League competition
as well. For more information and practice problems for these competitions, see Mrs. Hoffert,
room 359, Pennsylvania Math League Club advisor, or visit Mrs. Hoffert's school website.
Graduation Project
All juniors have met with Graduation Project advisors in late September to discuss individual progress.
Juniors are reminded once again that they should be completing their Career Cruising portfolio
and resume and their shadowing experience. Shadowing verification forms will be due the first
American Red Cross Club of EHS
Is Sponsoring a Summer Book Drive
The American Red Cross Club of Emmaus High School will sponsor a Summer Reading Book Drive. The
club members will place collection boxes in the English classrooms and encourage students to donate their
summer reading books during the month of October. The students will receive one voucher per book (many
teachers are holding the vouchers for their students until the spring). The vouchers can be exchanged in the
spring for the required books on the next year’s reading list.
Last year the students collected and distributed over 1,200 books. Please encourage your child to turn in
summer books and participate in this project! If there are any questions, contact Mrs. Sherwood, Club
Advisor: room 567 in the high school.
Math Tutoring
The math department teachers are able to offer math tutoring for all students most
periods during the school day. Students can check schedules posted in all of the
math classrooms to determine room locations for tutoring sessions. The students can obtain presigned
passes from their math teachers, or they can get a pass to the tutoring locations from their
study hall teachers. Each math teacher works with his/her students, but this math tutoring schedule
offers an alternative for students when they cannot match their schedules with their classroom
teachers.
Emmaus High School Parent Volunteer Organization
STEP is a volunteer group of parents in East Penn that sponsors activities to encourage our youth to
have fun without the use of drugs or alcohol. Members of STEP include parents, teachers, administrators
and citizens of East Penn School District.
STEP Activities….
Our group of volunteers teams with the EHS Student Government Association, freshmen orientation,
September tailgate party, homecoming dance, snowball dance, and the EHS Final Fling. These
events provide a wonderful opportunity for parent volunteers to participate at the school wide events.
STEP Sponsored Event of the Year
SENIOR AFTERBALL PARTY: FRIDAY, MAY 21, 2011
This event is an all night theme party open to all seniors at EHS. We plan this event to offer an alternative
to individual after prom parties. Last year’s event had 700 + students attend with another
ACCIDENT FREE PROM SEASON. It includes food, a casino, game shows, carnival games,
a full size miniature golf course, a DJ, massages, air brush tattoos, and huge prizes. One lucky senior
won a CAR last year! This event is funded strictly by donations and run entirely by volunteers.
Over 250 volunteers made this event a huge success!!
Volunteers are urgently needed, especially underclassmen parents!
We need your help on several committees; co-chair positions are available
NEXT meeting: OCTOBER 25, 2010
STEP meetings are scheduled on the 4 th Monday of most months during the school year. Meetings
start at 6:30 pm in room 353 at EHS and last only ONE hour! Attendance is voluntary.
To join STEP, please complete a membership form, which can be found at www.eastpennsd.org/
ehs/ . Select “programs,” and the STEP link can be found in the left column. The membership form
can be printed from there. Once complete, please send in or drop off in the EHS Main Office.
**Please note that all communication is distributed by group email **
