Page 8 Eyer Middle School Happy Summer! If you’re planning a family road trip, how about bringing an audiobook along? Going to the beach? Don’t forget to pack your bag with books! Summer book check-out forms are now available in the LMC for students entering 6 th , 7 th , 8 th , and 9 th grades. A signed form must be on file by June 13 th in order for students to use the library over the summer. Our final Literary Lunch of the year was lots of fun. Students discussed their favorite read of the school year. We all got lots of ideas for summer reading and are already looking forward to our next lunches in September! Thanks for all you do to encourage your child’s reading! Summer can be a great time to read as a family, and there are also wonderful opportunities available at the local public libraries. In addition, support an independent bookstore this summer! “Let’s Play Books”, located on the Emmaus Triangle, has a free reading program where students aged 8-18 may borrow advanced reader copies of books being published in the near future, review them, and swap them for more. Eyer Middle School Page 9 Literacy Launch News for June What exactly is a literacy-rich home? This describes a home environment that encourages children to become lifelong readers. Families can support language learning by creating a home atmosphere in which reading, writing, and talking are a natural part of daily life. Help your child develop the desire to be a lifelong reader by trying the following ideas: Discuss with your child how what he/she is reading compares/ contrasts to what is viewed on film, television, and the computer. Sometimes good movies are a starting point for pleasure reading – after seeing a movie based on a book, children will be motivated to read the book. Sometimes travel sparks reading, and finding books that relate to a place you visit on a family vacation can get a child hooked. Keep in mind that the most memorable conversations are often filled with anecdotes from literature. Relate what your child has been reading to the solution of problems. By internalizing what has been read, we use knowledge and wisdom to solve personal problems, to make mature decisions related to career choices and to develop healthy attitudes toward life. This is known as bibliotherapy. Studies show that the more children read, the better readers and writers they become. Help your children find more reasons to write. Enlist them in taking messages, making the shopping list, writing letters, and answering email. Last but not least, the single most important thing a parent can do is set a good example. Be a role model – let your kids see you reading.
