F.Y.I.
From the Principal
As we come to the conclusion of another school year, it is nice to reflect
upon all of the clubs, sports, activities, academic awards, field
trips, fundraisers and concerts that have kept the Eyer community
busy. My first year as Principal went by quickly; but it has proven to
be a memorable and successful one.
The year started off with a “WOW”, and I will never forget the students’
faces as they arrived on the first day of school to see the Eyerwood-themed
building and the teachers dressed as movie characters.
The themed events and activities made this a fun year for the students
and staff alike.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the faculty and staff at
Eyer for allowing me to serve as their leader. The teachers and staff
members of Eyer are truly one-of-a-kind. Their dedication to their
profession and their support of students is admirable. Through working
with them this school year, they have taught me a lot and helped
me grow as a leader. I would also like to thank the parents for their
support of the students of Eyer as well as the entire East Penn School
District community. Eyer Connection and our parent volunteers have
been on-board supporting the WOW events since last spring. Their
time, hard work, and financial support have played a big role in making
this year a success.
Career Cruising with Eyer Students
Students in sixth, seventh and eighth grade are again using Career Cruising , an
interactive web-based career exploration website. Since the grade- level counselor
facilitates this program, portions of the program are done each year, resulting in an
online portfolio for each student.
The Career Cruising Program includes detailed career profiles, multimedia interviews,
information about various post- secondary schools and training opportunities,
an electronic portfolio, self-assessments and much more. As students complete the
activities, they are able to save their individual results into a portfolio. The program is
continued at Emmaus High School, where it becomes part of each student’s graduation
requirement. Since Career Cruising is web-based, the site can be explored as
long as you have internet access. Just go to www.careercruising.com and enter Eyer
Middle School’s username (eyer) and password (middle). Click on “start career cruising”
to enter the site. Students can enter the site and access their portfolios at any
time using their specific username and passwords. So set sail and explore the world
of careers!
Counselor’s Corner
In addition to CTY info :
Counselors are busy welcoming new students to Eyer. This happens in the form of lunch bunches or 9 th
period meetings which include introductions, icebreakers and a question and answer session.
Here is a great analogy to use with teen and tweens:
How to put out fires
STOP DROP ROLL
Reacting to stupid stuff your irritation and anger get on with your life
got a flat.”

May’s Teacher of the Month!
Teacher of the Month Program
“Teacher of the Month” continued at Eyer Middle School this year. The purpose
of this program is to acknowledge and honor outstanding teachers who
go above and beyond to support students. Teachers were nominated by staff,
parents, or students. (A link to the online nomination form can be found on
the Eyer Middle School webpage under “Teacher of the Month”.) Based on
the best nomination, the Principal and Assistant Principal selected a winner
each month.
The winning teacher had his/her name displayed on the school website, received
a special lunch, and was awarded his/her very own "Teacher of the
Month" parking space out in front of the building.
End of Year News from the LMC:
Our last Literary Lunches of the year have been packed with students enjoying a
discussion about their favorite book of the past 10 months! For 8th grade, we have a
special farewell
pizza party for our devoted attendees, many of whom have not missed a Lunch for 3
years!
We will also be enjoying a special treat this year for the top 3 homerooms who have
checked out the most books. This treat is a surprise for students, and it is a delicious
one!
Any student wishing to borrow books over the summer may do so beginning the
week of June 2nd. Many books on the summer reading lists are available, including
those for incoming 9th graders, as well as new books throughout the summer! Up to
10 books may be borrowed at a time, and all books are due back to Eyer by September
2nd (though, of course, they may be returned earlier). Summer hours are 7am -
2:30pm and we ask that you call before visiting to ensure someone is available to help
you. This is a great way to prepare for summer vacations and road trips! Students
borrowing books for the summer must have a signed purple permission slip on
file in the LMC. These are currently available to students on the front desk in the Library
and have been publicized via EYE TV.
If your student is in need of summer reading recommendations, I am happy to provide
some personalized reading selections. My personal favorites this year were
Counting by 7s by Holly Goldberg Sloan, about a 12-year-old girl genius whose world
collapses and is forced to find a new family, and Five, Six, Seven, Nate! by Tim
Federle, about a boy’s hilarious experience making his Broadway debut in “E.T.: The
Musical.” Plenty of other great options are available in the LMC!
Wishing you a summer filled with great books & the time to enjoy them!
Happy Reading,
Librarian

Happy Summer! If you’re planning a family road trip, how about
bringing an audiobook along? Going to the beach? Don’t forget to
pack your bag with books! Summer book check-out forms are
now available in the LMC for students entering 6 th , 7 th , 8 th , and 9 th
grades. A signed form must be on file by June 13 th in order for
students to use the library over the summer.
Our final Literary Lunch of the year was lots of fun. Students
discussed their favorite read of the school year. We all got
lots of ideas for summer reading and are already looking forward
to our next lunches in September!
Thanks for all you do to encourage your child’s reading!
Summer can be a great time to read as a family, and there are also
wonderful opportunities available at the local public libraries.
In addition, support an independent bookstore this summer!
“Let’s Play Books”, located on the Emmaus Triangle, has a
free reading program where students aged 8-18 may borrow advanced
reader copies of books being published in the near future,
review them, and swap them for more. Check it out!
Happy Summer Reading!
Literacy Launch News for June
What exactly is a literacy-rich home? This describes a home environment
that encourages children to become lifelong readers. Families can
support language learning by creating a home atmosphere in which reading,
writing, and talking are a natural part of daily life.
Help your child develop the desire to be a lifelong reader by trying
the following ideas:
Discuss with your child how what he/she is reading compares/
contrasts to what is viewed on film, television, and the computer.
Sometimes good movies are a starting point for pleasure reading –
after seeing a movie based on a book, children will be motivated to
read the book.
Sometimes travel sparks reading, and finding books that relate to a
place you visit on a family vacation can get a child hooked.
Keep in mind that the most memorable conversations are often filled
with anecdotes from literature.
Relate what your child has been reading to the solution of problems.
By internalizing what has been read, we use knowledge and wisdom
to solve personal problems, to make mature decisions related to
career choices and to develop healthy attitudes toward life. This is
known as bibliotherapy.
Studies show that the more children read, the better readers and
writers they become. Help your children find more reasons to write.
Enlist them in taking messages, making the shopping list, writing
letters, and answering email.

Last but not least, the single most important thing a parent can do is
set a good example. Be a role model – let your kids see you reading.

Changes to Science Fair at the Middle Level
The East Penn School District has made the difficult decision to no longer participate in the
Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Sciences Science Fair. Students in 7th and 8th grade Honors
Science classes will continue to complete a rigorous independent science project and will have the
option to independently participate in the Lehigh Valley Science and Engineering Research Fair
sponsored by Lehigh University and Insaco, Inc. Students will have the opportunity to choose to
participate in PJAS at Emmaus High School.
There are a number of factors that led to this decision:
* Recently implemented guidelines have limited the type of experiments students can conduct.
These new guidelines have placed restrictions on the use of human subjects and the use of chemicals
as independent variables. The consequences for paperwork omissions as well as noncompliance
with these many new guidelines include disqualification.
* The date of the state competition conflicts with the Keystone Algebra I window. This affects a significant
number of participants and will result in longer testing sessions and limited time for make-up
testing.
* The History Day and PJAS Science Fair timelines overlap and have led to fewer students enrolling
in both Honors Social Studies and Honors Science due to workload.
* PJAS has changed the chaperone requirements for the state level competition. Meeting the new
student to chaperone ratios has become significantly problematic. The East Penn School District
requires professional staff members to serve as chaperones on overnight field trips. We are not
able to rely on parent chaperones to meet the new requirements.
We are committed to offering advanced science students rigorous and enriching curricular experiences.
The Lehigh Valley Science and Engineering Research Fair will continue this commitment
and challenge our Honors Science students.
Please feel free to contact us with additional questions.
Very truly yours,
