Greetings and welcome to
Rainbow Hospice and Palliative Care.
It has been a wonderful year for Rainbow Hospice and Palliative
Care as we continue to grow and extend our mission to more
and more people throughout Chicagoland. We have made some
amazing progress in our last 365 days; spending our first year in
our new home, surpassing 100,000 patient care days for the first
time and once again becoming one of Modern Healthcare’s Best
Places to Work.
The year has not been without some significant challenges. We,
like many others, face a distressing position from the State of
Illinois with more than a 180 day delay in payment. Over the
horizon, there are unprecedented changes to healthcare nationally
and here at home. And, we continue to wrestle with the challenge
of helping others find their way to relief with our services earlier. Yet despite these hurdles, we continue to
grow. We are able to take our challenges and use them to innovate new ways to expand on the many facets
of what we do.
Hospice is about so much more than an illness. Whether you’re an expert or a newcomer, I hope this year’s
annual report will help you understand what we do. I hope it will show you that our hospice is about
making each day a good day for our patients, for as many days as possible. It is also about making a grieving
child’s day a little safer, a medical resident’s day more instructive, a caregiver’s day more manageable, and a
volunteer’s day a little more social.
Each and every day, we are surrounded by exceptional people, from our staff and volunteers, to our amazing
patients, their families and caregivers. It is our mission to bring them all dignity and hope so together, we
can do more than just cope with the end of life. We want to celebrate life, because our experience has taught
us the value of a good day.
That’s why this is my best place to work.
Thank you always,
Patricia A. Ahern
President & CEO
The core of Rainbow Hospice and Palliative Care is the work we do each and every day to help
patients and families facing terminal illness. Through expert care and a team approach, Rainbow
Hospice provides quality hospice services to thousands of people throughout Chicagoland each year.
Hospice
Studies have shown, for patients with
certain terminal illnesses, on average
those who use hospice instead of
continuing curative treatment survive
30 days longer.
Who: Ida & Cosme
Where: Des Plaines, IL
Living life to its fullest is
important for every hospice
patient. For some it’s especially
meaningful, as with Cosme and
Ida who were finally able to get
married in their faith tradition
through the help of their
Rainbow Hospice and Palliative
Care team.
63% of Rainbow Hospice
patients are able to be cared for
in their primary residence.
In FY ‘12, Rainbow Hospice
was privileged to serve nearly
2,300 patients throughout
Chicagoland. From as far north
as the Wisconsin border, past the
South Side of Chicago and out to
St. Charles.
The average length of stay for
a Rainbow Hospice patient
increased by eight days in FY ‘12
to 55 days, yet the most common
regret we hear is still “I wish we
had heard about you sooner.”
The LIFE Institute provides a vital community resource for end-of-life education.
Each year, LIFE at Rainbow Hospice teaches doctors & nurses how to treat terminal patients,
teaches communities how to understand illness and helps lead research that will grow and expand
knowledge for the organization.
Education
Dementia With Dignity was created to
elevate the quality of care for people
living with dementia. Rainbow Hospice
staff has more the 2,700 collective
hours of dementia training to become
expert teachers and caring helpers.
Who: Marilyn Novak
Where: Glenview, IL
Marilyn Novak runs the
Abington of Glenview, one of
the partner nursing homes for
Comfort Care for Advanced
Dementia. Under her leadership,
the Abington is changing the
face of dementia care through
education from the Rainbow
Hospice LIFE Institute. The
Abington, along with the other
partner nursing home, Central
Baptist Village, will complete
their training in 2013.
With lead funding from the
Retirement Research Foundation,
a total of more than $500,000
in grants and contributions will
support the 3-year Comfort Care
for Advanced Dementia project.
In FY ‘12, the LIFE Institute’s
outreach education saw nearly
10,000 community members
and held nearly 50 professional
education credit courses
throughout Chicagoland.
At the same time, Rainbow
trained nearly 70 medical
residents and 190 nursing
students as well as 12 interns
from 4 separate disciplines, all on
how to care for terminal patients.
Education wasn’t limited to a
privileged few. Institute staff
helped educate inmates and
officers at the Dwight Women’s
Correctional Center on how to
establish a Threshold Choir for
terminally ill inmates.
Special services that go beyond the Medicare requirements for hospice help to provide an amazing
array of care and joy for our patients. Even without a cure there can be healing. Spiritual Care and
Healing Arts at Rainbow Hospice brings life, art, and music to those who need it most.
Healing
Rainbow Hospice is in its tenth year
of providing music therapy for our
patients. We know that music provides
spiritual and physical benefits, and is
an important part of our Spiritual Care
and Healing Arts services.
Who: Imelda Mizones,
Joan Maxwell, Lori Horbas
Where: Chicago, IL
The Rainbow Threshold Singers
is a group of women who sing
at the bedside in groups of 2’s
& 3’s. They sang for Imelda
Mizones, one of the patients
featured in the WBEZ radio
story. Imelda passed away in
August of 2012.
Rainbow Hospice provides an
extensive staff of Healing Arts
support including 13 chaplains,
3 music therapists, 2 massage
therapists, 27 Threshold Choir
members and numerous interns.
In addition to the day-to-day
work with patients, Spiritual
Care & Healing Arts at Rainbow
Hospice also holds four quarterly
interfaith memorial services
at different sites throughout
Chicagoland.
This summer, our Rainbow
Hospice Threshold Singers
were interview by WBEZ 91.5’s
Richard Steele to be featured on
Chicago Public Radio for the
work they do singing to and with
terminally ill patients.
With decades of experience supporting grief and loss, Rainbow Hospice Bereavement Support is
more than just a service to our patients and families. It is a community resource serving thousands
of people each year. Good Mourning, as part of Bereavement Support, provides the longest
continuously running, most family focused children’s bereavement program in Illinois.
Grief & Loss
Good Mourning is based on the idea
that each person has their own grief
journey. Facilitators and volunteers
utilize a proven “companioning”
philosophy with grief as a natural
process and children as experts in their
own experience.
Who: Good Mourning
Where: Dixon, IL
Good Mourning is unique in
the way it provides service to
children and parents or guardians
for families who have lost a loved
one. This family focus supports
kids in their grieving process and
provides parents with help and
understanding in how to explain
and explore their child’s grief as
well as their own.
In FY ‘12, Bereavement
Support served more than 9,000
individuals grieving the loss of a
loved one. More than 80% came
from the community outside of
our hospice program.
Nearly 175 children from
51 communities throughout
Chicagoland were served by
the Rainbow Hospice Good
Mourning Program. Most had
lost a parent.
Bereavement Support reaches
out in many different ways with
nearly 25 groups including Polish
& Spanish language support,
LGBT grief and other lossspecific
meetings.
In FY ‘12, Good Mourning
provided more than 2,500 hours
of grief support to community
and hospice families with
children.
Volunteers play an incredible role at Rainbow Hospice. They serve as office support in Medical
Records, Development and Admissions, play active roles in patient care and seek the formidable
calling of vigil volunteer for someone who is actively dying.
Volunteers
Our bond with animals is
unquestionable and studies have
proven significant benefits to pet
therapy, from decreases in pain and
anxiety to increases in cognitive
stimulation and mood.
Who: Wrigley
Where: Mount Prospect, IL
Rainbow Hospice supports
patients with volunteer pet
therapists certified by Therapy
Dogs International. These canine
companions and their human
counterparts make visits to the
bedsides of patients in nursing
homes, long term care facilities, the
Rainbow Hospice Ark, Inpatient
Unit and even patient homes.
Rainbow Hospice has an amazing
roll call of volunteers. With more
than 90 new volunteers joining
us in FY ‘12 we now have nearly
600 volunteers.
The estimated benefit (at the
national hourly rate) of all
the volunteer work done for
Rainbow Hospice comes to more
than $547,000.
Our volunteers put in an
impressive amount of service.
During FY ‘12 our volunteers
contributed more than 25,000
hours of work around the office
and with our patients.
11

Families have called the Rainbow Hospice Ark “The front door to heaven.” With an award winning
design, the Ark brings an atmosphere of home to an amazing 24-hour level of inpatient care.
The Ark
As its name implies, the Rainbow
Hospice Ark is a refuge for some
of the most critical patients served
by Rainbow Hospice, and for those
needing respite for their care.
Who: Roslyn
Where: Ark Inpatient Unit
Not everyone can be as spry as
a 97 year-old patient. Listening
to Roslyn talk about her life and
watching her give advice to staff,
gives a glimpse at the incredible
importance of the work done
at the Ark. The facility’s 24-
hour care gives expert symptom
management and respite support
in a home away from home for
patients like Roslyn.
In FY ‘12 the Rainbow Hospice
Ark served nearly 610 patients,
supporting them through severe
pain and crisis management.
Each patient who comes to the
Rainbow Hospice Ark receives
a handmade quilt, blanket or
afghan, selected specifically for
them, to reflect their personality.
The goal of the Ark is to control
symptoms and hopefully return a
patient to their home, the simple
fact of their disease often means
this is not possible.
This past year, more than
$50,000 in donations were raised
to help support the operations of
the Ark. It is a testament to the
peace, comfort, and care at our
inpatient unit that most of this
support came from families who
had loved ones at the facility.
13

Palliative Care at Rainbow Hospice is a growing service that provides consultations on pain and
symptom management to physicians and patients. Rainbow Palliative Care offers the expertise of
our hospice doctors and nurse practitioners to patients who are not yet ready or eligible for hospice.
Comfort
Palliative Care is a phrase new to
many people. It means “to lessen the
severity” and in practice it brings the
hospice philosophy of comfort care to
patients suffering from any kind
of illness.
Who: Carol Blendowski,
Dr. Michael Preodor,
Jeanne Frazel
Where: Throughout
Chicago
Rainbow Hospice provides doctors
and nurse practitioners in hospitals
and in the community throughout
Chicagoland to offer expert
palliative care consultations.
In FY ‘12, Rainbow Hospice’s
Palliative Consultation Service
increased by 60% to a total of
nearly 1,750 patients.
Palliative care can be provided at
the same time as other treatments
for chronic illness and helps to
manage pain, relieve symptoms
and establish goals of care.
Patients are seen in many settings
including hospitals, nursing
homes, long term care facilities
and in their own homes.
We continue to expand our
Palliative Care services with an
additional Nurse Practitioner
hired in FY ‘12 and a second
hospital-based Palliative Care
program planned for FY ‘13.
15

Angels Ball 2011
More than 800 people came out to celebrate
with us and to honor Sasha Gerritson & the
new Women’s Board for Rainbow Hospice and
Palliative Care. The evening was highlighted by
the story of Ed Beyer, a Rainbow Patient and
violinist who was able to play music for the first
time in 20 years thanks to the tender ministry of
our care.
Home Sweet Home - Amphora
Adding some pizzazz to the housing market,
Rainbow Hospice once again paired up with
Amphora Home Store to host an open house
charity event. Not only did the house sell, but we
brought in nearly 200 folks from the community
and raised more than $7,500 for the organization.
16

Rainbow Hospice and Palliative Care is privileged to serve in many communities throughout
Chicagoland. We are committed to continually expanding our presence in those communities by
touching lives and connecting our neighbors to the mission of our work.
Community
Good Mourning Benches
Art from the Good Mourning Camp took
on another life as an exhibit at the School of
the Art Institute of Chicago for “The Art of
Connection.” The show was an exhibition of art
created through Art Therapy internships and
featured a few of the “Empty Benches” made by
Good Mourning Campers in remembrance of
loved ones whom they had lost.
Rock Stars
Nothing beats beating the odds. For one Rainbow
Hospice patient who came to the Ark in a coma
from terminal kidney cancer, his Rainbow story
ended with him walking on stage for his own
Rock Concert. His band, Mock Five, helped raise
money for his five-year-old son and afterwards,
both of them went home.
their gifts towards the Rainbow Hospice Ark is too extensive
to print on these pages. Their names are showcased on the
continuously running donor screens displayed at the entrance to
of the Blowitz-Ridgeway Foundation, which was created in 1984 to focus on supporting nonprofits
which provide medical and psychological services to economically disadvantaged children and
adolescents. Over the years, with Ms. MacAlister’s support, Rainbow applied for and received
several grants to expand services including music therapy.
Rainbow Hospice Endowment Campaign
Our Seeing Beyond the Rain Endowment Campaign has reached the amazing milestone of $1,000,000. The final goal
is to create an endowment fund of $5 million by 2014 through current and deferred gifts. This support will fortify all of our
philanthropically supported programs such as the Good Mourning Program for bereaved children and families, our very
special Music and Massage Therapy programs, and education through our LIFE Institute.
The strength of a nonprofit organization like Rainbow Hospice is often measured by the funds it holds in reserve to
support its operations and provide stability in times of future economic uncertainty. Our campaign, Seeing Beyond the
Rain, is helping to build the resources that will maintain and grow Rainbow Hospice programs and facilities far into the
future.
Endowment gifts can be made to Rainbow Hospice and Palliative Care through a variety of giving plans, including pledges
of cash or stocks, bequests, and many planned gift instruments. Donors who make a gift or pledge of $25,000 or more
can elect to have a Fund in the name of their choosing. Named Funds are maintained and updated through Rainbow
Hospice and can be used to gather and grow support throughout the campaign.
