Kitchissippi is a vibrant, active and cooperative ward, due in no small<br />

part to the vital role that our community centres play in bringing<br />

together neighbours and neighbourhoods. <strong>Dovercourt</strong> Recreation<br />

Centre continues to be a hub for the community and an important<br />

space for building connections and having those meaningful<br />

interactions that <strong>guide</strong> and shape our exciting ward. The strength of<br />

Kitchissippi can be found in our communities.<br />

As councillor for Kitchissippi I am very proud of the role that<br />

<strong>Dovercourt</strong> Recreation Association serves in our ward and of<br />

the unique relationship that it represents between the city and<br />

community.<br />

Le quartier Kitchissippi est un quartier actif et dynamique, où les gens<br />

collaborent, et ce, en bonne partie grâce au rôle vital que jouent nos<br />

centres communautaires dans le rapprochement entre les voisins et<br />

les voisinages. Le Centre récréatif <strong>Dovercourt</strong> demeure un carrefour<br />

communautaire et un lieu important pour ce qui est de nouer des<br />

liens et de susciter des interactions significatives qui <strong>guide</strong>nt et<br />

façonnent notre passionnant quartier. Ce sont nos communautés qui<br />

font la force de Kitchissippi.<br />

En qualité de conseiller de Kitchissippi, je suis très fier du rôle que le<br />

Pass. Our Group Fitness Pass opens the<br />

doors to a varied, dynamic <strong>program</strong><br />

of fitness classes and the gym, and we<br />

are optimistic it will offer your kids a<br />

head start to their healthiest lifestyle.<br />

Additionally, pool passes can be added<br />

on at a nominal fee!<br />

Of course, safety is our top priority,<br />

so teens and pre-teens must be<br />

accompanied by the pass-holding adult<br />

at all times. The Health and Wellness<br />

Taking place at our McKellar Fieldhouse<br />

location, just blocks away from<br />

<strong>Dovercourt</strong>, this one-of-a-kind class will<br />

offer a challenge in cardio and resistance<br />

training, all the while enjoying fresh air<br />

and time with baby, followed by a good<br />

long nap for all! *(Naps are not included<br />

in the <strong>program</strong>).<br />

For those preferring to beat the heat<br />

and enjoy a low impact, high-energy<br />

workout, our Postnatal Aquafit invites<br />

moms and their little ones into our<br />

heated pool – great for babies – to enjoy<br />

the cardiovascular and dual-concentric<br />

benefits of aquatic training along with<br />

the joint and muscle-relaxing properties<br />

of the water. Both babies and moms alike<br />

are sure to enjoy this unique, dynamic<br />

<strong>program</strong> and a welcome escape from the<br />

hotter days of summer.<br />

We understand the importance of<br />

maintaining physical activity year-round,<br />

and that keeping the cardiovascular,<br />

strength and flexibility training up is<br />

often made easier with special guidance<br />

and, for some, a group atmosphere for<br />

motivation. This summer, <strong>Dovercourt</strong> has<br />

increased its Heart of Gold Programs,<br />

with two additional classes per week,<br />

and the continuation of our specialized<br />

small group strength training classes.<br />

Thanks to the newly renovated fitness<br />

centre now being made available to us<br />

year-round, we are pleased to announce<br />

Gold Club Small Group Strength Training<br />

<strong>program</strong>s will be on for summer <strong>2015</strong>, as<br />

well as our Osteofit and Women/Men on<br />

Weights Programs.<br />

Of course, it simply wouldn’t be Gold<br />

Club without our Lounge and special<br />

events, such as the big End of Year Picnic<br />

This shallow water class focuses on correct form and<br />

technique, and uses the resistive properties of water<br />

These early morning multi-level aqua <strong>program</strong>s focus on<br />

correct form and technique, making them a great way<br />

to get in a work out before work, and starting the day<br />

AQUA VARIETY<br />

Join Dylan for an exciting class featuring different styles<br />

of water-based fitness. Each week promises a new<br />

adventure as Dylan presents the newest aquafit trends<br />

and classic favourites. Suitable for all levels.<br />

AQUA POWER CIRCUIT<br />

Wake up energized! Start the day the best way with this<br />

multi-level, circuit-style workout. Taking place in both<br />

shallow and deep water, Aqua Power Circuit appeals to<br />

both beginners and advanced participants.<br />

DEEP AQUA<br />

Get deep into aqua with this low impact workout<br />

that is both challenging and relaxing. All participants<br />

wear aqua belts for flotation but must be able to swim<br />

without assistance.<br />

DEEP GENTLE AQUA<br />

Held in the deep water, our Deep Gentle Aqua is a<br />

perfect choice for those who are just getting started<br />

or require a gentle low impact form of exercise.<br />

Participants wear an aqua belt, but must be able to<br />

swim without assistance.<br />

TOTAL AQUA<br />

A total body tune-up is what you will get in this aqua<br />

combo class which features cardio, strengthening,<br />

toning, balance, core stability, coordination and agility.<br />

STRENGTH MIX AQUA<br />

Offering a low impact workout focused on muscular<br />

strength and endurance, Strength Mix incorporates a<br />

variety of equipment to provide an excellent toning and<br />

strengthening workout.<br />

H20 RUNNING<br />

Increase weekly mileage and eliminate the risk<br />

associated with repetitive impact during outdoor runs.<br />

Designed to improve your lactic threshold and V02<br />

max, H2O Running is unlike any other aqua workout,<br />

with participants are tethered in deep water to<br />

POST-STROKE AQUA<br />

Designed for stroke survivors, <strong>Dovercourt</strong>’s Post-<br />

Stroke Aqua offers a safe environment for individuals<br />

to perform exercises that will increase their functional<br />

ability. Clients are encouraged to bring an assistant.<br />

CANCER SURVIVORS<br />

Aquatic exercise during and post-treatment has been<br />

shown to improve the functional capacity of cancer<br />

survivors and promote faster recovery. The turbulence<br />

and buoyancy of the water assist in venous return<br />

and positively impact the internal organs, lymphatic<br />

and muscular systems. This class engages the entire<br />

body through exercises taught in a gentle and<br />

compassionate manner. A small group size ensures<br />

DROP-IN YOGA<br />

Take it slow with this gentle, but deep approach to<br />

Hatha yoga. This practice links poses to breath to<br />

reveal body awareness, inner strength, and easeful<br />

Based on Ashtanga yoga movements, this class flows<br />

through postures using incorporating the power of<br />

music and the body’s own strength. This class is best<br />

TOTAL BODY STRETCH<br />

This is not a yoga class! 45 minutes of muscle and<br />

limb stretch that will improve flexibility from head<br />

to toe. Stretching is functional, helps blood flow<br />

THE SWIM FOR LIFE®<br />

PROGRAM<br />

Basic swimming ability is a requirement<br />

of any meaningful attempt to eliminate<br />

drowning in Canada. Swim for Life®<br />

is a comprehensive swim instruction<br />

<strong>program</strong> that focuses on the acquisition<br />

and development of fundamental swim<br />

strokes and skills for learners of all ages and<br />

abilities. Learning Swim to Survive® skills<br />

and achieving the Lifesaving Society’s Swim<br />

to Survive® Standard are key foundations<br />

of the Swim for Life® Program.<br />

LIFESAVING PARENT &<br />

A rewarding experience for adults with<br />

infants or toddlers. These levels introduce<br />

the joys of water activity while stressing<br />

WHY TAKE SWIMMING<br />

LESSONS AT DOVERCOURT?<br />

<strong>Dovercourt</strong>’s highly-skilled instructors<br />

are able to teach children proper<br />

technique efficiently and effectively,<br />

in accordance with the high standards<br />

of the Lifesaving Society. Our endof-session<br />

Survival Day is unique to<br />

<strong>Dovercourt</strong> and is a fun yet powerful<br />

way to teach children skills that could<br />

save their lives in real-life scenarios.<br />

Our staff undergo extensive training<br />

and regular updates on safety,<br />

rescue situations, changes to current<br />

standards, as well as techniques for<br />

teaching. Many of our senior aquatics<br />

staff are instructor and lifeguard<br />

trainers and are a valuable resource<br />

for our aquatics team. Our leisure pool<br />

is designed to teach swimming, with<br />

unique features like warmer water, a<br />

beach entry, rope swing and shallow &<br />

deep water pods. We are proud of the<br />

lessons in a variety of instruments and art<br />

mediums. They are offered year round<br />

and sign up is available at any time.<br />

Private lessons are $22.25 for 30 min.<br />

Semi-Private Lessons (2 or 3 students<br />

RBC Bluesfest’s house photographers,<br />

Marc DesRosiers and Mark Horton<br />

presents this three-part (4 day) course.<br />

It all begins with classroom sessions that<br />

cover camera equipment and settings,<br />

composition, lighting, various shooting<br />

environments, workflow, editing, and<br />

preparation for onsite shooting at RBC<br />

Bluesfest. Course participants will shoot<br />

acts appearing on the ‘Monster’ stage<br />

during the first weekend of the festival.<br />

Using shots taken throughout that day,<br />

participants will wrap the workshop with<br />

a review and critique session with their<br />

peers and the facilitators. Participants’ best<br />

shots from the festival will be printed and<br />

exhibited onsite at RBC Ottawa Bluesfest<br />

during the second weekend of the festival.<br />

Please note: Live music photography poses extreme<br />

technical challenges for photographers; this<br />

workshop is intended for experienced photographers<br />

who have a firm grasp of the operation of their<br />

equipment, and a sound understanding of the<br />

fundamentals of manual exposure. Participants<br />

should arrive with a solid understanding of Aperture/<br />

Shutter Speed/ISO and familiarity with adjusting<br />

those settings ‘on the fly’ while photographing the<br />

performers.<br />

Adult Guitar Refresher (16+ yrs)<br />

This guitar class is for those who would like<br />

to progress just beyond the basics. It will<br />

first review, then progress beyond basic<br />

cords and strumming patterns to expand<br />

your skill set, therefore your repertoire.<br />

Participants should come in with the basic<br />

ability to play a few cords.<br />

Nature Painting for the Total<br />

Beginner (16+ yrs)<br />

Don’t know how to hold a paint brush? No<br />

problem! This course will cover everything:<br />

brushes, tools, colour mixing, composition<br />

and observation. You will then apply<br />

your new skills to paint your favourite<br />

landscapes, reflecting on your summer<br />

adventures.<br />

As an introduction to the guitar, this course<br />

will teach parents and kids chords and strum<br />

foundation for anyone who aspires to play<br />

guitar as a hobby or performer.<br />

Campfire Ukulele (6+yrs)<br />

The ukulele’s popularity continues to grow<br />

because it is relatively easy to learn, good for<br />

small hands and has a sweet, happy sound.<br />

The uke opens the door to the larger world of<br />

musical instruments in a fun way. Together the<br />

groups will learn chords, how to read chords,<br />

strum patterns, and then put it all together and<br />

play campfire songs.<br />
