del Risorgimento, the provincial Servizio di Tutela Archeologica, the Istituto<br />

Trentino di Cultura, and the municipal libraries of Trento and Rovereto. All the<br />

holdings at the Library of the Faculty of Humanities and Philosophy have been<br />

catalogued in the CBT database, although large part of pre-1984 publications in<br />

the province’s libraries are still card-catalogued.<br />

Description and services<br />

STRUCTURE: Located on the ground floor of the Faculty building is the<br />

consultation and loans service. The main room contains the circulation counter,<br />

the catalogues, and a station for CD-Rom consultation, while two reading rooms<br />

house reference works and the current year’s periodicals. Besides handling<br />

loans and requests for materials, the library staff are available for information<br />

and assistance. A separate office provides specialist assistance with on-line<br />

bibliographic searches.<br />

The basement contains the library’s stock of books and periodicals, as well as a<br />

room for users who require direct access to the shelves (lecturers, graduands,<br />

authorized users) and a CD-Rom consultation station.<br />

HOLDINGS: The Arts and Philosophy Library at present contains around<br />

110,000 books and 1,250 periodicals. Its stock constantly increases (around<br />

5000 new titles per year) to meet the Faculty’s research and teaching needs.<br />

Acquisitions are selected by faculty members and library staff, although all users<br />

may make suggestions, which are given due consideration. While all materials<br />

can be consulted on the library premises, some are not available for loan (texts<br />

on examination syllabuses, rare or valuable works, frequently consulted items,<br />

CD-Roms)<br />

ORDINARY LOANS: Library loan cards are issued by any library in the province<br />

of Trento belonging to the CBT. They entitle their holders to take out loans from<br />

all the libraries in the consortium in accordance with their regulations. Those of<br />

the University Library allow a maximum of 10 items to be borrowed by first-andsecond-year<br />

students and external users, and 20 items by third-year students<br />

and graduands. The maximum duration of a loan is 30 days, extendable to 60<br />

days. A fine of € 5,00 is charged for each item not returned within the loan time<br />

limit. The loans service terminates half an hour before the library closes.<br />

INTER-LIBRARY LOANS: These can be requested at the circulation desk,<br />

provided they concern bibliographic materials available from the CBT. In other<br />
