June 2009 Clubs and Activities Sunland Springs Village Voice Computer Club Jane E. Harrel, President • Jane.harrel1@cox.net We are in the midst of summer and the hot weather, but inside the Superstition Room it’s cool, both temperature-wise and subject-wise. We had a great presentation from Allen Schaeffer on the SSVHOA website and from Greg Lutz on financial dealings on the web. Now we can all go forth and multiply our millions. This month Dick Simmon is bringing us two sessions using Mac Computers. He will be demonstrating how a Mac works, showing some videos and other features of a Macintosh computer. Then we will show side by side usage of a Mac and the Vista operating systems. No, it won’t be “dueling computers;” it will just give you an idea of what each computer can do, the accessibility and speed. No judgments will be made. In July Jane Harrel will demonstrate Word, Email, Excel and/or File Management. That means: How to make folders, name documents, retrieve documents and attach to emails. August will be too hot to think, but we’ll come up with something – you just wait and see. Don’t forget in September we have scheduled a “picnic,” including a field trip to Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport with lunch following. We’ll carpool from the Activities Office, have a guided tour of the airport from a bus and then lunch in the little deli there. Sounds like fun, so stay tuned for more information. Summers are a great time to come and get to know us in the Computer Club because no dues are collected or attendance taken. We don’t even have business meetings. We just have fun and you will learn lots. So if you aren’t currently a member of the Computer Club, come to a meeting and give us a test drive. REMEMBER: We meet the first and third Wednesdays through September at 10 AM in the Superstition Room. Softball Spotlight Linda “Scooter” Granzow, Coordinator of Team Promotion, SSV Softball Club Welcome to June; it’s officially summer now and the heat is on! The SSV Softball Club has already wound down most scheduled activities for the season. We still want to remind our fans/supporters that the Softball Club continues sales of soda pop and snacks at all Thursday evening Bingo games, beginning when Auditorium doors open around 5:30 PM and ending after intermission. Proceeds raised for the Softball Club treasury are used toward Softball Field upkeep and team(s) equipment, etc. Your generous assistance to make our varied fundraisers successful is greatly appreciated throughout the year! Speaking of fundraisers, next season we plan to reprise our now-legendary series of Pancake Breakfasts and our annual Hamburger Feast. To properly thank the SSV community at large, we will also conduct our third annual Community Fun Day in November 2009. Stay tuned for all of the pertinent details as we approach our autumn season. Thanks to the following additional members of the Softball Club Board, re-elected in March (besides yours truly): Dave Chase, Shirl Sutor and Paul Hensley (groundskeeper – a BIG job!). Our past presidents Dick Paulin and Rex Smith also deserve a commendation, as do Dave Chase and Larry Selear for spearheading our major fundraisers (and agreeing to do so again in ‘09-’10). Open practices for SSV residents/Softball Club members/authorized guests are held at 7:30 AM Saturdays at the SSV Softball Field during the summer months through the end of September. We also continue to recruit women for the SSV Scorpions (ladies’) team; practices will commence in the fall and league play runs January through early March. If interested, please contact Manager Patti Finney at 982-7747 for details. We are publicizing our field usage policy for SSV residents/homeowners’ and their guests only (not applicable for organized teams not authorized/recognized by the SSV Softball Club). Residents who wish to reserve the Softball Field for their personal use should call Joe Fellhauer at 835-6052 for reservations. Reservations are available on a non-interference basis with existing teams’ playing schedules throughout the season. Singles Get-Together Jan Smith Congratulations to Edna and Don for hosting an excellent dinner at Carrabbas in April. The food was tasty and we shared some good companionship. The June dinners will be hosted by Patty DeYoung and Dennis Eschman. The Potluck will be held on June 9 in the Superstition Room at 5 PM. We will go to My Big Fat Greek Restaurant for our dinner out on June 23. We’ll leave the parking lot promptly at 4:30 PM, so please be on time. We hope for a great turn-out at the Potluck and Dinner Out! JUNE LADIES LUNCHEON Ruth Selear Sign-ups are being taken for the June Ladies Luncheon on Wednesday, June 17, at 11:30 AM. The luncheon will be at the Superstition Springs Golf Resort in Mesa. The cost of $16 will include the wonderful buffet, beverage, dessert, tax and gratuity. We will meet in the Courtyard at 11 AM to carpool to the restaurant. Please sign up in the Activities Office and purchase your ticket by June 12. Your hostess for this event is Ruth Selear. Sunland Springs Village Voice June 2009 Clubs and Activities / From the Board Karaoke Party! Monica Rae Stein We saw lots of cowboy hats and boots at our May 8 Karaoke Party as we gave tribute to country music. Pat Wohland, along with Joe and Kathy Fellhauer, did a bang-up job with the decorations. We celebrated our May birthdays and introduced our new sound system. Dan Radeka started the evening with “I’m so Lonesome” followed by Ivan and Monica Rae Stein singing “My Maria” and “Oklahoma Swing.” The girls wanted to “Feel Like a Woman” and the guys sang “All My Ex’s Live in Texas.” Dan enticed Kathy Mitchell to duo on “Somewhere Out There” and Lyn Mineo and Ronnie Cohen sang “Ring of Fire.” Newcomer Mary Williams and Monica harmonized on “Tennessee Waltz” to the delight of the dancers. Dan sang about “The Gambler” and was joined by John Herr for “Hey Good Lookin’.” Lyn, Kathy and Judi Ofelt sang about “Mr. Sandman” and Ivan and Ronnie said they “Should’ve Been a Cowboy.” Wayne Havelka was a “Boy Named Sue” and Bud West and John sang “Bye Bye Love.” Jim Wysoski gave us “He’ll Have to Go” and Doris Havelka and Judi were “Walkin’ After Midnight.” Ivan entertained with “I Love this Bar” and Doris, Ronnie and Judi with “These Boots Are Made for Walking.” Judi made quite a picture wearing Wayne’s boots! Bud sang “After the Lovin’” and was joined by John for “All I Have to Do is Dream.” We had great participation from our cowgirls who gave us “Delta Dawn,” “Mommas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Cowboys” and “Paper Roses.” The cowboys sang “Dang Me” and “Make the World Go Away.” Kathy couldn’t find her salt as she joined Dan, Ivan, Monica, Mary and Jim for “Margaritaville.” Mary and Jan Jelley sang “Take Me Home Country Roads” and Jan was joined by Bud for “Your Cheatin’ Heart.” Our next party is June 5 from 7 - 9 PM in the Superstition Room. The theme is rock and roll. We’ll be singing those juke box favorites. Admission is only $1. Bring your own drinks and a snack to share. Sunland Springs Village Homeowners Association Monthly Meeting April 28, 2009 Auditorium The meeting was called to order John Lippert at 9:45 a.m. after distributing a copy of the Master Association financial report for the period ended March 31, 2009, to the audience. He introduced Jeff Decker, Chairman of the HOA Advisory Board and Vice President of Farnsworth Homes, and Jane Harrel as recording secretary. In reviewing the financial report, Mr. Lippert highlighted the Cox Revenue Share received of $13,823, which exceeds the budgeted amount by $2,000. He also pointed out that the Janitorial expenses were more than budget but this expense should decrease during the summer months. He also pointed out that there was a problem with termites in the Springs Card room and bees were swarming twice at the auditorium entrance and had to be eliminated. A homeowner reported scum accumulating above the water line in the large pool and wondered what could be done. Mr. Lippert stated that spring break and the increase number of visitors always causes a problem. This tile has been cleaned for several years by the morning aerobics group. Terry changes the water in the spa every week. Mr. Lippert also stated that the Mixed Doubles Tennis Tournament held here was very well run by the Tennis Club. He also noted that the Pool Monitoring Committee of Joanne Chapin and Myra Lillie was doing a good job and made for a quiet spring break. In November there will be the Western States Shuffleboard Tournament here, and it is expected that 400 shufflers from all Western United States and Canada will be here. Twelve of the 16 courts are being resurfaced the other four were done last year, so the area will be in great shape. A second sunscreen will be added as well. Other improvements in the sports facilities include a new sunscreen in the tennis courts paid for by the Tennis Club; a concrete pad behind the dugouts at the softball field; Karaoke purchased some new equipment that was approved (it will be put into use on May 8th as reported by Dan Radeka). Four new air fresheners were installed in the fitness center; supposed to be odorless and neutralize the air. Mr. Lippert extolled the abilities of the volunteer workers here in the Village and the work they do, such as regrouting the tile at the spa and fixing a leak found in the dishwasher in the auditorium kitchen. With regard to sales of new homes, Mr. Decker stated that they are slow but steady with a couple each month. We should be able to reach our goal of 50 this year, he stated. In response to questions from the audience, Mr. Decker noted that the infrastructure was in at the corner of Signal Butte and Baseline, but he didn’t know if Walgreen’s had applied for their building permit. He has tried to contact the owners of the self-storage units at Guadalupe and Signal Butte, but no response. There no information on when the stoplight will be working at that same corner.
