YWCA Metro St. Louis History, 1905-2010
In St. Louis, our beginnings can be traced to housing
and job training for rural women who came here
to work at the 1904 World’s Fair. In 1905, we were
incorporated as an autonomous, accredited affiliate
of YWCA USA. Since our local founding, programs
and services have evolved to meet constituents’
changing needs, yet our commitment has never
E
Dear YWCA Metro St. Louis Friends,
We are proud of the continuing positive impact that
our YWCA is having on the lives of girls, women and
their families in the St. Louis community. This report
highlights just a few of last year’s achievements.
In 2010, our YWCA took note of a transformative
event in American history, the 90th anniversary
of the passage of the 19th Amendment to the U.S.
Constitution that granted women the right to vote.
We were especially proud to have galvanized women’s
groups and organizations around signature
events that commemorated the anniversary.
A sea of all-white attire and hats signaled the
Women’s Equity Day Celebration in August. Our special
guest was Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, granddaughter
of former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and vice president
of global corporate citizenship for The Boeing
Company. The I Am Woman poetry slam provided a
poetic forum for expressions that paid homage to the
amendment’s passage and Iron Jawed Angels offered
a starting point for discussing gender, race, access
and power at a So Reel speaker’s series presentation.
etter
o the
All YWCA programs paid tribute, in some way, to
the landmark anniversary. They did so while continuing
to deliver crucial services. One such service
was honored for its work. The St. Louis Metropolitan
Police Department presented our St. Louis Regional
Sexual Assault Center with its Citizen Service Award
for their partnership in assisting assault victims and
efforts to make St. Louis safer.
School-Age Care and YW-Teens were restructured
to fall under one umbrella, the Youth Division.
Thirteen women moved from homelessness and
into permanent housing through their efforts in
the Transitional Housing Program. The Economic
Empowerment Stability Initiative, in partnership
with the Trio Foundation of St. Louis, graduated four
by helping these women heads-of-household earn
incomes to sustain a family through nontraditional
careers. And in 2010, our YWCA Head Start program
was rated fully compliant for all program operations
by a Federal Peer Review.
Also in 2010, the Young Ambassadors, a volunteer
group formed to attract women professionals between
the ages of 22 to 35, was established.
We are pleased to report for another consecutive year
our operations met the stringent Wise Giving Alliance
Standards set by the Better Business Bureau. And
once again, YWCA received a clean financial audit.
We appreciate the volunteer chairwomen and
their committees who supported our three major
fundraising events that are critical to sustaining
our programs year-round: Leader Lunch, Circle of
Women and the Valentine Fashion Luncheon. We are
also grateful to our dedicated board of directors for
their fiduciary leadership and policy direction.
We thank all of our many program volunteers, staff
members, individual and corporate donors, and other
friends who helped us deliver services to more than
17,000 women, girls and their families last year.
Transitional and Affordable Housing
When the YWCA began, its primary objective was to provide housing for rural
women who came to St. Louis for the 1904 World’s Fair. More than 100 years later,
the YWCA continues to provide safe, affordable housing and an array of additional
services for homeless women. The Phyllis Wheatley Transitional Housing Program
(THP) offers a stable environment and intensive supportive services for up to two
years, enabling participants to become self-sufficient and economically stable for
transitioning into sustainable permanent housing.
The YWCA also addresses the lack of affordable housing, the leading cause of homelessness
nationally. The renovated Phyllis Wheatley complex, at 2709-11 Locust St.,
offers 33 affordable one- and two-bedroom apartments for individuals and families.
St. Louis Regional Sexual Assault Center
Sexual assault and sexual violence are violations that can turn a person’s life inside
out. Without proper intervention, that violence can destroy one’s sense of self worth
and well-being. Our YWCA St. Louis Regional Sexual Assault Center is there to provide
support, information and resources to help victims as they begin the journey to
recovery from the devastating trauma of sexual assault. The Sexual Assault Center
serves the metropolitan area through three core program areas: crisis intervention,
survivor support services and education.
YWCA deploys trained Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) volunteer advocates
to all adult area hospitals, providing crisis intervention to rape victims. SART
volunteers, who are on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, offered crisis intervention
to more than 400 survivors in 2010. The strong partnership with the St. Louis
Metropolitan Police Department has enabled the center to provide direct response to
victims at local police stations and to collaborate on professional training for patrol
officers. YWCA also receives referrals from the 531-RAPE (7273) crisis line.
Our extensive support services included utilizing strategies that are tailored to each
survivor and may consist of individual therapy, support groups and case management,
as well as follow-up services and referrals. In 2010, 400 individuals received supportive
services throughout the year.
YWCA provided critical prevention and professional education sessions throughout
the area. Last year, nearly 8,000 people took advantage of our professional,
risk-reduction and awareness education programs.

Highlights:
❈❈
SART’s 40 active volunteers provided more than 1,100 hours of direct
crisis intervention to victims in local emergency departments. SART
maintained its 100 percent response rate to requests for services.
Youth Programs
youth
programs
YWCA Metro St. Louis supports early childhood development and emphasizes selfawareness,
self-esteem and racial justice acumen for youth, all of which are means
for achieving the organization’s mission to eliminate racism and empower women.
YWCA youth programs support and guide the young and are designed to help foster
character-building and good citizenship while promoting inclusion and dignity for all.
The youth division is comprised of two components targeted at grades K-12. In 2010,
approximately 2,800 youth were served through the School-Age Care before- and
after-school services and through YW-Teens.
9
YW-Teens
Preparing the leaders of tomorrow through the support of young women today is
the YW-Teens mantra. Teen development has been a primary goal of YWCA since its
founding more than 100 years ago, squarely fitting in the organization’s mission to
empower women by touching their lives long before they become adults. YW-Teens
helps girls realize their untapped potential. Its core program areas, for girls ages
11-18, are the Young Women’s Leadership Academy, Emerging Entrepreneurs and
Young Women’s Leadership Conferences.
Young Women’s Leadership Academy consists of components
that support the development of girls, ages 11 to18, who are in
middle and high schools. Its four components are leadership,
personal and career development and college readiness. The
combination of these components offer students tools, exercises
and resources to assist them in making decisions that result in
social, emotional and academic success. YW-Teen programs are
conducted in area middle and high schools as after-school programs
and/or part of personal development programs during
the regular school day.
Emerging Entrepreneur Institute is a year-round economic
empowerment initiative that introduces area high school students
to entrepreneurship through various educational and experiential activities.
During the regular school year, students participating in the Career and Technical
Education program (CTE) at area St. Louis city high schools are invited to participate
in the YW-Teens Emerging Entrepreneur Elevator Pitch Competition, the four-week
Emerging Entrepreneur
empowering
Academy and the Young Entrepreneurs Showcase and
mini-conference. The YW-Teens program provides these students with experiences
and information that enhance their classroom instruction. Additionally, YW-Teens
works closely with instructors to develop strategies that meet the needs of the
students. By the end of the program, students are able to develop a business plan for
their business concepts. Many of the classroom instructors have replaced their final
exams with our
women
program.
and
Young Women’s Leadership Conferences offered interactive workshops, dynamic
speakers and community resources that aid the growth and development of
middle and high school students. Conference highlights include a community
resource fair and the recognition of young leaders for their outstanding accomplishments
in academics, leadership and community involvement. Young Women’s
girls
Leadership Conferences are held in May for middle school girls and in November for
high school girls. Attendees are drawn from public, private, parochial and charter
middle and high schools located throughout the bi-state region.

School-Age Care
YWCA has been providing comprehensive, quality, year-round services during
non-school hours for nearly 30 years in the greater St. Louis community. Through
School-Age Care, we provide children, ages 5-12, a variety of adult-supervised, developmentally
appropriate activities before and after school and during the summer
months. Programs offer a safe learning environment that supports the academic,
social and physical development of children.
Our RISE (Reaching Independence through Support and Enrichment) program
enhances student development by incorporating academics, nutrition, community
involvement, emotional support and character-building, along with parental engagement.
It is supported through a partnership with the Area Resources for Community
and Human Services (ARCHS) at three of the 10 program sites for elementary school
children in the St. Louis metropolitan area.
Our signature Camp Derricotte offers eight weeks of summer enrichment that
bridges learning from the end of one school year to the start of the next. Structured
academic and recreational activities such as math, reading, science, character-building,
educational field trips, arts and crafts and guest speakers are incorporated into a
new theme each week.
women’s leadership
Leader Lunch
Leader Lunch is the premier St. Louis event that recognizes the contributions
of women in the workplace and the community. In 2010, Leader Lunch celebrated
“Pearls of Wisdom,” marking 30 years of celebrating women’s leadership. Nearly
1,200 people celebrated the achievements of eight Leaders of Distinction in the
business, communications, entrepreneurship and nonprofit sectors, a Racial
Justice Leader and a Future Leader. The luncheon also provided an opportunity
for 40 St. Louis businesses to recognize their Leaders in the Workplace, individual
women who are making significant contributions in their own companies. Jane
Wulf, chief administrative officer for Scottrade, Inc., served as chairwoman and Ann
Prenatt, vice chancellor of human resources for Washington University in St. Louis,
served as co-chairwoman of the 30th Leader Lunch Steering Committee.
YWCA Academy of Leaders
The Academy of Leaders is composed of the distinguished Leader Lunch honorees.
Since the inception of Leader Lunch, 330 women have been named to the
academy based on their leadership in the workplace, efforts to promote racial
justice, and positive influence on colleagues, professional women and others in
the community. Many academy members have provided leadership to advance
civic causes, women’s issues and philanthropic endeavors, as well as served on
the board of directors of the YWCA and other nonprofits.
Alberta E. Gantt Valentine Fashion Luncheon
The Valentine Fashion Luncheon is YWCA’s longest-running special event
fundraiser and supports the historically significant Phyllis Wheatley Branch.
The Phyllis Wheatley Branch was organized in 1911 to serve African-American
women and was merged with the Metro St. Louis Branch in 1939. The fashion show
began in 1970, led by its first chairwoman, Alberta E. Gantt. The event’s name was
changed in 1983 to honor Gantt’s longtime volunteer commitment to the Phyllis
Wheatley Branch and to the fashion show. On its 40th anniversary, the luncheon
rallied more than 100 volunteers to conduct the event, raising much-needed funds
for the Phyllis Wheatley Transitional Housing Program. Chairwomen Cleotra
Woodson and Jacqueline Dyer, long-time supporters and volunteers, led the
Physical Improvement Committee and the Phyllis Wheatley Branch Committee on
Administration; 401 people attended the luncheon.

Circle of Women Luncheon
The Circle of Women luncheon fundraiser was recast in 2010 to benefit all YWCA
landmark programs, rather than a single initiative. In 2010, a record 770 people
attended. Contributions support YWCA programs and services that empower
women, help find solutions to race equity issues and offer housing stability, economic
upward mobility, counseling, and personal, child and youth development. In 2010,
18 additional names were added to the YWCA Circle of Women Giving Society, a
multi-year giving level that was introduced in 2009 and is comprised of contributors
who pledge multi-year gifts of $1,000 or more to support YWCA programs.
Chairwomen of the luncheon were Anna Doyle, consultant, MarketSphere
Consulting and Valerie Patton, executive director, St. Louis Business Diversity
Initiative. Table captains filled the room with guests at tables of 10.
YWCA Head Start Parent Involvement
Not only do children enrolled in the Head Start program get a head start on learning,
so do their parents or guardians, who are offered opportunities to develop their
leadership potential. Parents may participate in all facets of Head Start as a volunteer,
or they may participate on the Parent Committee, Policy Committee, Policy Council
or Advisory Committees. Each level of involvement assists parents in being engaged
in the program as they gain knowledge and skills that can be applied in life outside
the program.
YW-Teens Leadership
A key goal of the YW-Teens program is to develop leadership qualities in girls and
teens by helping them express their individuality, build self-esteem and contribute
to society. Its Girls Circle program, designed for 9 to 18-year-olds, is structured as a
support group and promotes self-expression through the exploration of such topics
as “Relationships with Peers,” “Who Am I,” “Paths to the Future” and “Honoring our
Diversity.” Project G.L.A.S.S. (Girls Learning About Self-Esteem and Sisterhood) is
designed to increase self-esteem, life skills and literacy through literature. The Young
Women’s Leadership Conferences, for middle- and high-school girls, are day-long conferences
that expose attendees to numerous youth-centered resources and mentors. At
each conference, three young leaders are recognized for outstanding accomplishments
in academics, leadership and
womens
community involvement. Emerging Entrepreneurs is
a year-around program that exposes area high school students to entrepreneurship
through the development of educational and experiential activities.

communities
and racial justice
Racial Justice
Issues of race and ethnicity continue to impede our ability to live in a multiethnic,
multicultural society that respects others’ differences. YWCA is committed to eliminating
the systemic and institutional barriers to race equity and the oppression of
individuals through anti-racism and anti-oppression instruction. The commitment
to this mission area extends to all program areas, as well as throughout the organization’s
structure. More than 2,200 people were touched by racial justice programming
in 2010, an increase of almost 50 percent over the previous year.
The So Reel Racial Justice Speaker’s Series experienced massive growth in
2010. Its interactive format, which incorporates a video, guest speaker and audience
engagements, ignited in 2010. It has grown to become well received and well
attended. In 2010, a daytime speaker’s series was piloted. Daytime and evening
topics included, Men Unlearning Sexism; Executive Order 9066; Understanding
the Hispanic Culture in the Workplace; Out of Darkness - Overcoming the Stigma
of Mental Health; Race and Education; White Privilege; The Women’s Suffrage
Movement; Racism and Social Workers and our first YWCA Poetry SLAM, which
included young and seasoned poets.
and raceial
j ustice
Racial Justice initiatives were conducted communitywide, delivering more than
175 hours of training in 2010. Presentations and trainings were customized to meet
the needs of each organization. They broadened awareness and provided a greater
understanding of how racism affects everyone. Last year we were also strategic in
extending our efforts through collaborations and partnerships with many organizations.
Some of the training topics included: Cross Cultural Communication, Cultural
Considerations in the Interview Process, Understanding Race and The Intersection
of Race and Gender. YWCA provided external seminars and trainings to numerous
organizations, including MODOT’s first Diversity Conference, the St. Louis County
Juvenile Detention Center, Epworth, the Greater Missouri Leadership Challenge
and other organizations.
The Racial Justice Web page was modified and is a resource that consists of
suggested videos, books and literature recommendations for parents, teachers, community
members and anyone seeking additional information about inclusion and
race equity issues.
Racial Justice Integration in Programs
Transitional Housing Program
The Racial Justice department introduced a series called Reflections,
two six-week sessions to educate women in the program on systemic and
institutionalized racism. It provided tools, resources and information on
how to understand, combat and overcome these challenges and barriers.
Sexual Assault Center
Volunteers with the Sexual Assault Center participated in cross-cultural
training for helping survivors of sexual assault. These Saturday sessions
included understanding the intersection of race, gender and culture for
people impacted by sexual violence.
Head Start
Head Start managers and teachers continued conversations about racism
and education in 2010. These sessions explored the affects of race within
the educational system, the importance of parental advocacy and the impact
of internalized racism within communities of color. As an aftermath, evening
sessions began with parents to provide a greater understanding of the
importance of parental advocacy after their child leaves Head Start.
School-Age Care
The department created racial justice curriculum for the organization’s
three Camp Derricotte locations. Children received 191 hours of racial
justice awareness in 2010.
YW-Teens
Through open and honest dialogue, teen girls challenged their perceptions
and increased their appreciation of people’s differences by tackling topics
such as race, gender, stereotypes and diversity through workshops offered
at the bi-annual Young Women’s Leadership Conferences.

YWCA Phyllis Wheatley Heritage Center
The Phyllis Wheatley Heritage Center is a restored landmark in our community
that was the center of African-American culture during the era of segregation.
Thousands of St. Louisans fondly remember it as the gymnasium of the historic
YWCA Phyllis Wheatley Branch. Today, the center represents YWCA’s continued
commitment to and presence in the African-American community. It also continues
to serve as an important gathering place for creating new historical moments for the
community with state-of-the art meeting and event spaces that are available to individuals,
commercial clients and other nonprofit groups.
In addition to hosting the monthly So Reel Racial Justice Speaker’s Series, the
center was the venue of choice for supporting many YWCA programs such as the
YW-Teens Summer Entrepreneurship Academy for emerging business owners and
the Head Start Volunteer Awards Luncheon.
The Phyllis Wheatley Heritage Center hosted 40 meetings and events throughout
2010 for individuals, corporations and other nonprofit organizations. The center was
the memorable setting for numerous wedding receptions, birthday parties, family
reunions and proms.
The following groups utilized the Heritage Center in 2010:
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity
Grace Hill Settlement House
Hope Build
Lincoln University Alumni
Regional Health Commission
St. John’s AME Church
Challenges Unlimited
Challenges Unlimited enhances the quality of life and independence of adults
with developmental disabilities. The program jis structured
ustice
to promote self-reliance,
self-advocacy community integration to help participants gain greater independence
in the home, on the job in the community.
“This program is a blessing from God,” says Nina Murphy, a parent who gave an
impromptu testimonial about the program’s benefits during an Open House in July,
held at the Phyllis Wheatley Heritage Center. “This is allowing parents, like me, to
work,” she continued. Murphy was among the more than 60 people in attendance
who were current or future program participants, family members, funders and program
supporters. Her son, Derek, has been in Challenges for a year. “I can see how
he’s grown and he’s become so independent,” said the proud mother.
Challenges Unlimited participants caroling in YWCA headquarters in December.
Wall of Sentiments-A collection of individual thoughts about the importance
of women’s voting rights was accumulated throughout 2010 at YWCA offices.
Equity Day Rally attendees added their own sentiments as well.
“ Everybody counts in applying
democracy. And there will never
be a true democracy until every
responsible and law-abiding adult
in it, without regard to race, sex,
color or creed has his or her own
inalienable and unpurchasable
voice in government.”
How you can support the YWCA?
Whether your gift is of time or money, your support is important to the YWCA
and those we serve. We have three major fundraising events each year: The
Valentine Fashion Luncheon in February, the Circle of Women in April and
Leader Lunch in December. Please also remember us in your annual giving
and estate planning. Contact the Development Office at 314.531.1115 for more
information about donor and volunteer opportunities.
Equity Day celebrants — Kimberly Smith, Linda McDaniel,
Adrian Bracy and Jane Towater.
