YWCA Phyllis Wheatley Heritage Center
The Phyllis Wheatley Heritage Center is a restored landmark in our community
that was the center of African-American culture during the era of segregation.
Thousands of St. Louisans fondly remember it as the gymnasium of the historic
YWCA Phyllis Wheatley Branch. Today, the center represents YWCA’s continued
commitment to and presence in the African-American community. It also continues
to serve as an important gathering place for creating new historical moments for the
community with state-of-the art meeting and event spaces that are available to individuals,
commercial clients and other nonprofit groups.
In addition to hosting the monthly So Reel Racial Justice Speaker’s Series, the
center was the venue of choice for supporting many YWCA programs such as the
YW-Teens Summer Entrepreneurship Academy for emerging business owners and
the Head Start Volunteer Awards Luncheon.
The Phyllis Wheatley Heritage Center hosted 40 meetings and events throughout
2010 for individuals, corporations and other nonprofit organizations. The center was
the memorable setting for numerous wedding receptions, birthday parties, family
reunions and proms.
The following groups utilized the Heritage Center in 2010:
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity
Grace Hill Settlement House
Hope Build
Lincoln University Alumni
Regional Health Commission
St. John’s AME Church
