Challenges Unlimited<br />
Challenges Unlimited enhances the quality of life and independence of adults<br />
with developmental disabilities. The program jis structured<br />

to promote self-reliance,<br />
self-advocacy community integration to help participants gain greater independence<br />
in the home, on the job in the community.<br />
“This program is a blessing from God,” says Nina Murphy, a parent who gave an<br />
impromptu testimonial about the program’s benefits during an Open House in July,<br />
held at the Phyllis Wheatley Heritage Center. “This is allowing parents, like me, to<br />
work,” she continued. Murphy was among the more than 60 people in attendance<br />
who were current or future program participants, family members, funders and program<br />
supporters. Her son, Derek, has been in Challenges for a year. “I can see how<br />
he’s grown and he’s become so independent,” said the proud mother.<br />
Challenges Unlimited participants caroling in <strong>YWCA</strong> headquarters in December.<br />
Challenges is offered year around to St. Louis City and St. Louis County residents,<br />
ages 21 and older. It provides opportunities for social, leisure and educational activities<br />
that increase skill sets and help individuals acquire a sense of personal safety<br />
and physical well-being. Participants are engaged in nutritional and financial literacy<br />
classes and attend live theater, dinner and movie nights as well as seasonal<br />
sporting events.<br />

Challenges Unlimited served 79 women and men in 2010.<br />

In 2010 operating hours were extended to include mornings so that participants<br />
could have social and leisure activities during the day.<br />

Challenges held its first athletic awards ceremony for participants in a<br />
bowling and kickball tournament during the summer.
