YWCA St. Louis Head Start/Early Head Start
The YWCA St. Louis Head Start/Early Head Start program provides comprehensive
child development services that increase school readiness of children, birth
to five. Head Start is federally funded and served 2,847 income-eligible families,
operating in 11 centers and 16 child care partner sites. In 2010, 310 Early Head
Start families, with 384 children, and 2,569 Head Start families, with 2,784 children,
were served, making our Head Start the largest in St. Louis and one of the largest
programs in its four-state region. All facilities are licensed by the state of Missouri
and most are nationally accredited.
Step Up to Leadership
The Incredible Years curriculum assists parents in
addressing child aggression, behavior issues and
increases social competence at home. It is conducted in
collaboration with Places for People.
In collaboration with St. Louis Marriage Coalition, workshops
help strengthen families by building effective
communication and conflict management skills.
The Child Advocacy Day, held annually in Jefferson
City, Mo, the state capital, gives parents the opportunity
to advocate for early childhood programs and child-centered
initiatives to congressional representatives.
The male involvement initiative, Ma.G.I.C (Males
Guiding and Involving Children), encourages male
engagement in the early stages of a child’s development
and life. The 13th annual male leadership conference, in
collaboration with other Head Start and local community
agencies, offers workshops for males with children
enrolled in the Head Start/Early Head Start program.
Step Up to Leadership, through the Community Action
Agency of St. Louis County, Inc. (CAAStLC), is a 12-week
program to assist low-income people in developing leadership
skills and civic engagements. Graduates from this
program have sat on the YWCA and/or CAASTLC board
of directors.
