The Right Time Executive Partners Steve Kestner and Alec Wightman were elected to lead the firm beginning January 1, 2004. Their vision for growth makes this the right time. We have a culture of great character and respect for each other. “We will pursue accelerated growth, not for growth’s sake, but growth that makes Baker & Hostetler a greater law firm,” said Kestner at the firm’s 2004 Partners Retreat. Among the reasons he cited for growth were the necessity to remain competitive as a national firm, to attract and retain top legal talent, to add expertise to gain new business from current clients, to reach new clients, to spread the cost of technology and to increase revenues and profits. “But possibly just as important as these strategic and competitive reasons to grow, we know it is more exciting to work at a growing and dynamic firm. “We need to be strong on the coasts—in Los Angeles, in New York, and in Washington, D.C.,” Kestner said. “We currently have exceptional lawyers in those locations, but we need to have a larger critical mass to be on the radar screen in those cities.” Kestner and Wightman said that the firm will continue to pursue growth through lateral partner hires, practice group acquisitions, expansion into new locations and mergers. They stressed that growth opportunities will be considered only if they enable Baker & Hostetler to retain its character. “It’s all about the culture,” Kestner said. 6
