THE RIGHT TIME STRENGTHS TO BUILD UPON Lateral partners Steven Goldberg and Jim Mercadante joined Baker & Hostetler’s New York office. Their strong transaction experience, combined with the firm’s already- established corporate practice, became the subject of a feature article in The Deal, a respected publication for dealmakers worldwide. The article, entitled Baker & Hostetler’s Practice Stretches Beyond its Middle Market and Regional Focus, demonstrates how lateral partners joining Baker & Hostetler benefit from the firm’s national practice platform. STRATEGIC PRACTICE GROWTH Our growing Government Policy Practice is part of the firm’s 70-attorney Tax Group, led by lateral partner Jeffrey Paravano, who returned to Baker & Hostetler after serving in the U.S. Department of Treasury as Senior Advisor to the Assistant Secretary for Tax Policy. Recent lateral additions to the practice include practice leader Tom McDonald, who served as the U.S. Ambassador to Zimbabwe, former Congressman Dennis Eckart and former Education Department Deputy Assistant Secretary Raymond Pierce. MEETING CLIENT NEEDS Baker & Hostetler’s Litigation Group has added strong laterals in areas of growing client need. Six former federal prosecutors, including Jim Wooley (at right), put the firm ahead of nearly every national firm in its ability to advise and represent the increasing number of corporations, their executives and directors coming under regulatory scrutiny. The team includes George Stamboulidis, who was recently appointed by the Justice Department to serve as independent monitor of Merrill Lynch and Marc Powers, who represented Douglas Faneuil, the government’s key witness in the Imclone—Martha Stewart case. 8
