Sport Update
Bill Turner Cup Soccer (Under 15s Girls and
Boys)
On 17 May Junee hosted the first round of Bill Turner
Cup Soccer against Temora, Young and Tumut High
Schools.
Both the boys and girls‟ teams played well against
Temora, with the girls making light work to make it
through to the second round against Young High. The
boys had a more difficult task, after giving up a 2-0
halftime lead they held on to finish 2-2 at the end of
normal time. The game went into a “drop-off” where a
player had to leave the field every 5 minutes until
someone scored. Eventually Junee prevailed with a
brilliant strike from Justin Jenkins late in extra time.
Unfortunately the boys had a tougher task against
Young High, going down 4-1 in tough conditions. They
held on strongly in the first half to be tied 1-1 at
halftime but unfortunately their defence could not hold
on. The best for the boys were Justin Jenkins, Damon
Jackson and Braiden Philipse.
The most exciting game of the day was saved for the
girls‟ second round against Young High, as they held
on for a 1-1 draw at the end of normal time, to go into
a “drop-off” as well. Some strong defence and talented
goal-keeping by Hannah Turner and Abbie Foley kept
Junee in the game. Some nervous moments passed as
both teams had players drop off the field every 5
minutes, and eventually making it through 20 minutes
of extra-time without a goal scored. This resulted in a
penalty shoot-out with the remaining seven players
lining up to compete and hope for some luck. After an
intense round where all players had a shot and there
was still no difference between the teams, Abbie Foley
lined up for her second shot to win the game. With
nerves of steel she easily slotted the goal, after also
goal-keeping during the shoot-out, creating a massive
cheer from the crowd who had remained to watch the
end result.
This exciting win saw the girls travel to Cootamundra
on June 3 to play Cootamundra High in the next round.
Again the defence was the key for Junee High, with the
senior players of Nastarsha, Chloe, Tegan and Abbie
determined to step up and lead the way!
Unfortunately the team lost the game 1-0 despite
great resilience to continually defend the goal. In the
second half, Junee certainly looked the more likely
team to score, creating several chances in the final 10
minutes and never giving up.
This team should be very proud of making it this far, as
there were only a handful of regular soccer players. All
players showed great improvement between the first
game against Temora and the final game against
Cootamundra. The team spirit was extremely positive,
with all players contributing to the success of the team
and senior players demonstrating leadership to
develop the less experienced players.
It was a pleasure taking both of these teams to
represent Junee High, as they represented the school
with great skills and passion. Well done!
Zone Athletics
On 20 May, students represented the school at Zone
Athletics in Temora. Despite some poor conditions at
times, all students who came away represented the
school in a very positive manner. Most students
participated in as many events as they could, while the
sportsmanship of all involved was to be commended.
The students who made it through to the Riverina
Athletics Carnival in Albury on the 26 July are Billie-
Rose Deacon (Long Jump, Triple Jump), Justin Jenkins
(High Jump) and Andreas Shepherd (1500m, Long
Jump). Congratulations and good luck at the next level!
