Junee High School
Principal’s Message……
Year 8 into Stage 5 Electives Information
Night Wednesday
Information booklets about elective subjects were
distributed this week. If your son or daughter missed
out on a booklet please contact the office.
On Wednesday night 16 October, we will have a
special information night for students and parents
about the curriculum organisation and choices that we
are putting into place for Year 8 and 9 students for the
completion of the Stage 5 (Years 9 and 10) in 2014-
2015. We will provide parents and students with an
outline of the significant changes we plan for the next
two years.
All parents with their sons and daughters are invited to
join us at the Junee Ex-Services Club at 6:30pm for
this meeting.
HSC Examinations
Year 12 commenced their HSC examinations yesterday
and by early November they will have completed
thirteen years of education. We wish them all well in
each of their examinations.
Teaching staff turned up in big numbers at the
Examination Centre this morning to wish them well as
the students waited to enter. They appeared nervous
but we are quietly confident that they will do well. A
number of students and staff gave up a lot of their
own time to work to be ready to do their best.
Carers Week
It is Carers‟ Week this week which provides an
opportunity for all of us to become Care Aware and to
recognise and celebrate the dedicated people
throughout our community who provide unpaid
support to a loved one. Carers are husbands, wives,
partners, children, friends, grandparents, employers,
employees and citizens. When a person becomes a
carer for a family member or friend, their lives and
relationships can change dramatically. It is likely that at
some stage we may all face the decision to become a
carer for a family member or friend, or may even
require care ourselves.
The 2014 HSC has already started
Our Year 11 students (who we affectionately refer to by
an additional point each week - this week they are
11.2) commenced their HSC studies in week one. They
were each issued with their assessment booklets and
now have a clear outline of when every major
assessment task and examination will be held for 2013-
2014. We would encourage the students to record
these details on electronic and hand-written diaries so
that they can plan effectively for each task.
Community Courses
We had a pleasing roll up for the Information Night
held last Wednesday, where we presented possible
Community-based HSC courses to run in 2014.
From the interest shown at this meeting we are now
looking at the possibility of actually running three
courses: Ancient History, Computing Applications and
Visual Arts.
At present there are not enough numbers for any of
these courses to definitely run but we‟re keen to make
them a success. If you or someone you know may be
interested in joining one or more of these classes, we
would ask you to make contact with the school so we
can confirm the courses that will run.
Living and Learning
The Live and Learn Day is an annual event held for Year
6 students throughout the Junee District. We support
this program by providing Year 10 and 11 student
mentors on the day. It is a valuable leadership
opportunity. Many students have volunteered their
time for 1 November. It is an all-day activity which
continues to be generously hosted by St Joseph‟s
Primary School.
Art Exhibition – 15 and 16 November
We are getting closer to the completion of all the
wonderful art works that will make up the many parts
of the Ngumba-Dal Learning Community Art
Exhibition. We will once again be taking over the
Athenium to display a wide range of student art works.
We have invited our local preschool and St Josephs to
join with us in a celebration of art creativity. More
details will be provided as we get closer to the
exhibition.
We are both nervous and excited about the judging of
Art4Ag entry this coming Friday. Ms Glasgow and a
number of students have worked very hard for many
months now, on presenting a decorated plaster-cast
cow which will wow the judges. The calf has had all
four of our partner schools‟ complete their artistic
2013 Mad Hatter’s School Ball
In the final week of Term 3 we held one of the most
important social functions on the school calendar, the
Annual School Ball. It was a wonderful evening; one of
the best! The theme was the Mad Hatter‟s Tea Party.
The students celebrated this event in style. The boys
looked schmick while the girls were dressed in style.
A huge thank you to Natasha McInerney and Amanda
Crane who decorated the hall brilliantly. Each year they
seem to outdo their efforts from the year before. Also
a big thank you to Mr T (Pike) and Mr Lyons. Their DJ
work was a highlight of the night. The staff support
was wonderful as there was more than 20 staff
attending the night … a huge effort and greatly
appreciated.
Junee Show
We hope that you will be able to take some time to
see the school‟s exhibition at the Junee Show in a
fortnight‟s time. We will once again be creating a
photo exhibition of a range of activities in which our
students have been involved in 2013.
An important development this year will be that our
school will be involved in the display and presentation
of sheep in the various competitions organised on the
day. Mr Anderson and the entire Ag team are pulling
out all stops to make this a success. However, we know
that we cannot do this without the support of our
sponsors and local farmers and agri-businesses.
It will be great. We‟ll see you there.
Students express their views
Our new school captains, Jaielin Miles and Ebony
Becquet were asked to participate in a gathering of a
small number of students from around the Wagga area
to express their views about a range of matters
affecting youth. Adam Pulford, who managed the
session, has run a series of national workshops as it will
be his role to speak to the United Nations about what
Australian youth think about a wide range of topics,
especially the issues now and in the near future. Jaielin
and Ebony did a wonderful job representing our
students at this forum.
Miss Lamotte also ran and organised an opportunity
for all our students to let the Department know about
their fears, hopes, expectations, needs and concerns.
This information was returned to school last week and
the data will be used to shape our school policies and
curriculum in the future.
2013 School Ball
Mr Matthew Brown
Principal
The Annual School Ball was held on the last Thursday
night of Term 3 and those attending enjoyed an
entertaining evening.
Alice in Wonderland was the theme for the decorations
and it did look like a wonderland thanks to Mrs
McInerney and Mrs Crane and their band of helpers.
This year each year group was given a theme relating
to the overall idea e.g. clocks, Queen of hearts, tea
party and Year 12 won the best decorated table.
Amidst all this we had our own Mad Hatter, not Johnny
Depp but Mr Lyons who entertained all with his
costume and antics.
Music was provided by DJ Pike and he did a great job.
All participated in the Barn Dance, Progressive Jive,
Canadian Three Step and Pride of Erin with a few Year
7 boys proving they have twinkle toes! „Group‟ dances
proved a hit too as did the contemporary ones. There
was hardly a student sitting down all night except for
when they were eating supper which was catered for
by the P&C. To those parents who served a variety of
savoury treats a big thank you.
To the many people who helped make the night a
memorable one thank you and look forward to next
year.
The TAS/CAPA staff has been very busy over the past
term and has many projects on the go during Term 4.
Junee High School
Last term the Year 12 Design and Technology and
Visual Arts students completed their major works for
the HSC and all students worked exceptionally well to
complete these by the due date. Many of these works
will be displayed during the up-coming Art exhibition.
The Technology classes have been designing and
creating many different projects. Miss Asmus‟s Year 7
class this term has enjoyed creating their timber boxes
in the woodwork room.
Year 11 Hospitality completed their work placement
toward the end of last term and all students received
very pleasing feedback from their employers. They
have gained valuable industry skills, serving and
communicating and serving customers and also using
a variety of commercial kitchen equipment. We would
like to thank these local businesses for their support of
the Hospitality students and the school.
The Junee Run has had a very successful lambing
season over the past few months with many new lambs
being born. Our lambing percentage was 130% -
including a set of quadruplets and one set of triplets
and multiple sets of twins. Recently we added four
young ewes to the breeding stock of the Border
Leicester Stud. The ewes were purchased from Jeff
Sutton of Wattle Farm; Jeff continues to be a
significant supporter of the stud and we thank him for
his continued encouragement.
The stud had a successful show team, again attending
the Temora show in the school holidays winning two
1sts, two 2nds and a 3 rd . The school will be attending
and competing in the local shows coming up including
the Illabo Hoof and Hook competition, Cootamundra
Show and of course the Junee Show Sheep
competition which will be run by Mr Anderson and
Junee High School. This will provide a great
opportunity for parents to see what the students are
learning about in Agriculture.
We also received a donation from Jody Russell, of
another Alpaca to the school for fox and dog control.
Thank you to the Russell family. Over the school
holidays Libby O‟Reagan took our poddy lamb for the
entire holidays and we would like to thank her and her
family for helping the school out and ensuring that the
lamb survived and will make a valuable contribution to
the stud.
The Food Technology and Hospitality students are also
getting organised to enter the Junee Show with a
variety of cooking occurring over the next two weeks.
Term Four in Visual Art will be very active as a number
of projects reach fruition. The projects include both
curricular and extracurricular. The first deadline will be
the completion of the Archibull cow and calf, due
October 18. This is an extracurricular initiative that Year
9 students have been collaborating on. The project
requires students to use visual art and multimedia to
explore aspects of agriculture and use a life size
fiberglass cow and calf as a “canvas” to illustrate their
knowledge, skills and ideas. The Archibull is a national
initiative driven by the Art4Agriculture program. The
cow is the responsibility of the secondary students; the
calf has been shared across the four primary feeder
schools as part of the Ngumba-Dal Learning
Community.
Currently all Aboriginal students within the Ngumba-
Dal Learning Community are exploring traditional skills
through the making of various items. The skills include
weaving, roping, painting and printing. The items
include message sticks, boomerangs, baskets,
rainmakers and artworks reflecting aspects of their
heritage.
The Junee community will have the opportunity to view
a large cross section of student artworks from
Kindergarten to Year Twelve at the forthcoming
Ngumba-Dal Visual Arts Exhibition on November 15-
16. The exhibition will also showcase the Indigenous
students‟ artworks and the Archibull cow and calf. It
will be a large overview of the possibilities within the
Key Learning Area of Visual Arts. The venue of the
exhibition will be The Athenaeum, Broadway Junee.
Workshops for Indigenous Students
In recent weeks Indigenous students from the
Ngumba-Dal Learning Community have participated in
a series of workshops delivered by the Hands On
Weavers Group from Wagga Wagga. This group of
Aboriginal women have been teaching traditional arts,
craft and other Indigenous skills to students. They have
also shared a wealth of knowledge and life experiences
which in turn has provided an insight into their cultural
background.
There will be more exciting experiences for the
Indigenous students in the Ngumba-Dal Learning
Community before the end of their school year as
conversations with other artists progress.
Our Aboriginal students have been exposed to these
rich and diverse cultural experiences thanks to efforts
of Junee High staff who successfully acquired funding
on behalf of the Ngumba-Dal Learning Community.
Thanks also to the Indigenous artists who have been so
supportive and enthusiastic about sharing their
knowledge, skills and experience. The artists have
thoroughly enjoyed their interactions with the students
and staff of the Ngumba-Dal Learning Community.
The students have been attentive, productive and
appreciative of their tutors and thrilled with their work
WANTED
Ms Merrin Glasgow
Visual Arts Teacher
Do you have any old fishing equipment you don‟t
need?
The secondary students have explored weaving,
twining and roping which evolved into traps, rope
baskets and bracelets. The primary students have
listened to stories and created artworks in response.
Students collected natural objects and incorporated
them into exquisite weavings. Additional items made
include rain makers and emu callers. In forthcoming
workshops our boys will decorate didgeridoos and girls
will learn further techniques in weaving to make large
baskets.
In an upcoming workshop students will be exposed to
a brief summary of the cultural significance behind
various art making practices and explore printing
techniques by Wagga Wagga based artist Ms Melanie
Evans.
Year 9/10 Marine Technology would love any old
fishing rods or reels, hand lines and sinkers. If you have
any disused fishing items please drop them into the
school.
2013-2014 Harvest
Miss Prue Asmus
Technology Teacher
The 2013-2014 grain harvest will be underway soon.
The annual harvest can result in increased heavy
vehicle activity in the local area around your school
from around October. While harvest is usually largely
concluded by January, higher traffic levels can continue
beyond this period.
Grain Corp is working closely with the NSW Roads and
Maritime Services (RMS) to encourage safe practices
around fatigue management and vehicle loading
among grain growers and transport companies.
