Principal’s Message…
Tourism
There is a Junee tourism and lifestyle promotion
happening at present. The timing is connected to
Laurie Daley’s coaching NSW State of Origin teamas
well as using Ray Warren for the voice overs. One of
the features of the advertisements is a glimpse of our
students and the school. We are, after all, an important
part of the community. The tourism advertisement can
be found at https://vimeo.com/68359864 while the
lifestyle advertisement is https://vimeo.com/68359878
The Show Must Go On
At the end of Term 2 we finally got the opportunity for
our students to perform our “This Isn’t Kansas”
production. The two week delay had been caused by
the fallen air conditioning duct in the MPC. The
students worked hard to prepare the show, under the
direction of Ms Hyland and with the support of many
other staff. Our thanks to all those who came to see
the show and congratulations to all those who
participated in the production.
Staffing changes
Our new Head Teacher TAS, Ms Emma Turvey
commenced work at Junee High School last Monday.
She brings with her a wealth of teaching and
leadership experience from her previous school,
Broken Hill High. She was the Head Teacher Welfare
and the principal was very sad to lose Ms Turvey’s
experience, skills and leadership. Their loss is our
wonderful gain.
Lions Honours Assembly
We held our Semester One Lions Honours Assembly
on Thursday last week. It was absolutely wonderful to
see so many students receive their Credit and
Distinction Awards. Four students deserve particular
praise for having reached Credit Status: Benjamin Cook
(Year 8) Henley Hamilton, Chloe Middleton and
Elizabeth O’Regan (all in Year 9).
We thank Knud Hanson (President) and Peter Logan
for their attendance and the ongoing support from the
Junee Lions Club.
We hope and expect to see many, many more students
strive for success and recognition, with more standing
up at the end of the year and for the higher awards
and status updates at the school’s Presentation Night
in December.
Aspire UC (University of Canberra)
Our two representatives from the University of
Canberra completed their series of workshops with our
students in Year 7-10 in the last week of Term 2. They
remained impressed with the commitment and active
participation of our students in the program. Thanks to
Mrs Bunyan as the coordinator and to the students for
their positive response to this opportunity.
Report and Parent Teacher Night
All Year 7-11 Semester One reports were issued in the
last week of term. We hope our students took the
opportunity to work with parents to look at what has
worked well and perhaps what needs to be improved
to achieve better results at the end of the year.
There will be another Parent Teacher afternoon and
evening held towards the end of Term 3, Wednesday
11 September, starting at 4:30 pm. Please reserve this
day and time to meet with your child’s teachers and
discuss ways we can support each other more
effectively.
Year 10 into Year 11 (2014) Information
Night – Monday 7 August
All Year 10 students and their parents and caregivers
are invited to attend an Information Night to be held
at the Junee Ex-Services Club on Monday 7 August.
The nature of senior school has changed dramatically
(even over the last two years,) but especially by
comparison with the time when our Year 10 parents
were at school. There is almost no comparison
between the course offered in the 1980 and 1990s,
with the possibilities and opportunities that are
provided in 2014. Please join us to hear and learn
about some of the details.
Elisha McDermott - Taking the Lead
The Director General for a Day program is run by the
Department of Education and Communities. Each year
only a handful of students are chosen from the many
hundreds of public secondary schools in NSW, to
experience the management challenges of the largest
bureaucracy in the southern hemisphere.
We are very proud to have Elisha McDermott selected.
She will shadow Martin Graham, Deputy Chief
Executive in Sydney on Monday 29 July.
Junee High School
Elisha’s success follows on Amelia Patterson’s equally
prestigious selection in this program in 2012.
Take a shot!
There are all types of student successes that we
recognise each year but Kyle Dunstall from Year 9 has
been hugely successful in his chosen sport, shooting.
His grandfather has been his mentor and coach. He
takes this sport extremely seriously and his efforts,
determination and skills have been rewarded with
outstanding results in the State finals held during the
last school break.
Kyle secured 4 th place in the U18’s and 5 th place in the
U25’s. Given that Kyle is only 15, these are remarkable
results. The website’s official scoreboard has been
‘grabbed’ to highlight his success.
Small Steps Program
During the last week of Term 2, Miss Fritsch and I had
the pleasure of attending the Good Start Early Learning
Centre in Junee for the presentation of certificates to
our first graduates of the Small Steps program. This
program involves students working at the centre for
one day per week for a whole term. During this time
they have to design, make and deliver an activity
suitable for the age group of children they have been
working with. Congratulations to Kaitlin Lawson and
Natalie Puttock on their efforts. This term sees Hannah
Stapleton, Chloe Middleton and Jaime Johns undertake
the program.
Natalie all smiles with her Small Steps certificate presented
by Elizabeth Robbie .
Mr Matthew Brown
Principal
Junee High School – Playgroup
returns!
Child Studies students in Years 9 and 10 are busy
planning new and fun activities to use in this year’s
playgroup. After a successful introduction last year, the
students are keen to see Playgroup up and running
again this year.
The playgroup will be for pre-schoolers and will run for
five consecutive weeks starting on Friday 16 August.
Parents and carers are invited to attend and share a
cuppa whilst the young children enjoy the activities
provided by the older students.
If you would like your child involved in this program,
please contact Junee High School to make a booking.
Year 12 Hospitality
Students impress guests with gourmet menu
and table service…….
The five Year 12 Hospitality students greatly impressed
the 35 guests who attended their function on Monday
evening during the last week of Term Two. It was an
opportunity for them to showcase their Food and
Beverage Skills. It was a very ambitious plan for five
students to provide a delicious alternating three course
menu as well as undertake the compulsory table
service assessment. It is a task designed for two
separate classes at TAFE.
Many of the guests were current staff at Junee High
School, parents of the Year 12 students and we also
welcomed some former Junee High School staff: Mr
Carl Doherty, Mrs Lisa Kells, Mr Andrew Denham and
Mr Chris Payne. We thank them all for taking the time
to support the work of our Hospitality students.
It was of credit to the students to have two entrees,
two mains and two desserts of such high quality.
Guests were also greeted with a mock-tail and Turkish
bread to dip in olive oil and dukkah. All yum. Students
had to practise silver service for the bread roll and
filling the guests’ glasses with water and a range of
non-alcoholic ciders.
The students did an extraordinary job transforming the
Textiles room into an ambient restaurant. They also
had to set the tables to industry standard; something
they did meticulously.
The menu of Potato, leek and bacon Soup, Creamy
Pumpkin Soup, Red Current Glazed Rack of Lamb,
Poached Chicken Breast with Creamy mustard sauce,
Chocolate Baskets filled with homemade Vanilla Bean
Ice Cream with berry coulis, strawberry fan and toffee
shards and Rose Water Pavlova Nests with cream,
strawberries, blueberries, berry coulis and rose water
Persian fairy floss. It was just delicious. Guests greatly
appreciated the experience and gave full credit to the
students for a very pleasant, enjoyable evening.
Well done Tayla, Ben, Kara, Keely and Kayla for doing
such a fantastic job and giving up a Sunday to prepare
the menu. Mrs Lee Cooper was also a very valuable
member of the team, donating her time on Saturday to
purchase stock and assisting all day Sunday with the
preparations, we couldn’t have done it without her. The
students certainly appreciated Mrs Cooper’s support as
they presented her with a lovely bunch of flowers on
the evening.
We wish all the students our best for their future
endeavours either in the Hospitality Industry or in
whatever field they decide on. They will certainly be an
asset to their chosen field.
Diners enjoy the hospitality from the Yr 12 students
Thank you so much for the opportunity to work with
you all and see how you have developed over the two
year course to enable you to work together as a team
to complete this huge task. I will treasure your
achievement and the lovely memory at the end of my
time at Junee High School.
