Junee High School Principal’s Message… Tourism There is a Junee tourism and lifestyle promotion happening at present. The timing is connected to Laurie Daley’s coaching NSW State of Origin teamas well as using Ray Warren for the voice overs. One of the features of the advertisements is a glimpse of our students and the school. We are, after all, an important part of the community. The tourism advertisement can be found at https://vimeo.com/68359864 while the lifestyle advertisement is https://vimeo.com/68359878 The Show Must Go On At the end of Term 2 we finally got the opportunity for our students to perform our “This Isn’t Kansas” production. The two week delay had been caused by the fallen air conditioning duct in the MPC. The students worked hard to prepare the show, under the direction of Ms Hyland and with the support of many other staff. Our thanks to all those who came to see the show and congratulations to all those who participated in the production. Staffing changes Our new Head Teacher TAS, Ms Emma Turvey commenced work at Junee High School last Monday. She brings with her a wealth of teaching and leadership experience from her previous school, Broken Hill High. She was the Head Teacher Welfare and the principal was very sad to lose Ms Turvey’s experience, skills and leadership. Their loss is our wonderful gain. Lions Honours Assembly We held our Semester One Lions Honours Assembly on Thursday last week. It was absolutely wonderful to see so many students receive their Credit and Distinction Awards. Four students deserve particular praise for having reached Credit Status: Benjamin Cook (Year 8) Henley Hamilton, Chloe Middleton and Elizabeth O’Regan (all in Year 9). We thank Knud Hanson (President) and Peter Logan for their attendance and the ongoing support from the Junee Lions Club. We hope and expect to see many, many more students strive for success and recognition, with more standing up at the end of the year and for the higher awards and status updates at the school’s Presentation Night in December. Aspire UC (University of Canberra) Our two representatives from the University of Canberra completed their series of workshops with our students in Year 7-10 in the last week of Term 2. They remained impressed with the commitment and active participation of our students in the program. Thanks to Mrs Bunyan as the coordinator and to the students for their positive response to this opportunity. Report and Parent Teacher Night All Year 7-11 Semester One reports were issued in the last week of term. We hope our students took the opportunity to work with parents to look at what has worked well and perhaps what needs to be improved to achieve better results at the end of the year. There will be another Parent Teacher afternoon and evening held towards the end of Term 3, Wednesday 11 September, starting at 4:30 pm. Please reserve this day and time to meet with your child’s teachers and discuss ways we can support each other more effectively. Year 10 into Year 11 (2014) Information Night – Monday 7 August All Year 10 students and their parents and caregivers are invited to attend an Information Night to be held at the Junee Ex-Services Club on Monday 7 August. The nature of senior school has changed dramatically (even over the last two years,) but especially by comparison with the time when our Year 10 parents were at school. There is almost no comparison between the course offered in the 1980 and 1990s, with the possibilities and opportunities that are provided in 2014. Please join us to hear and learn about some of the details. Elisha McDermott - Taking the Lead The Director General for a Day program is run by the Department of Education and Communities. Each year only a handful of students are chosen from the many hundreds of public secondary schools in NSW, to experience the management challenges of the largest bureaucracy in the southern hemisphere. We are very proud to have Elisha McDermott selected. She will shadow Martin Graham, Deputy Chief Executive in Sydney on Monday 29 July. Page 3
