Principals Message…
Parent/Teacher Afternoon and Night – You
are invited to join us on the 27 March
On Wednesday 27 March, starting at 4:30pm and
finishing at 6:30pm we have our first of two annual
Parent/Teacher Nights. These evenings are a most
important opportunity for parents to get a sense of
how their sons and daughters are progressing in the
new school year. It is roughly half way through the first
school semester. We have timed it so that with quality
feedback students still have an opportunity to get
themselves on track or back on track. Each interview is
only 5-7 minutes in duration and we recognise that if
there are more serious issues to discuss then this is an
opportunity to set up an appointment for a later
interview.
P&C Meetings
We hold two P&C Meetings each term, generally in
weeks 4 and 8 of the school term. The first of these
meetings is an executive meeting the second is a full
meeting. We had a fantastic roll up at our last meeting
with twelve parents attending and making some really
positive suggestions as to how they can support the
school. The goal is to raise funds for particular projects;
the more students who benefit the better. The parents
also agreed to a subtle but valuable change to the
school uniform; we will be introducing a cotton drill
(navy blue colour) shirt for students to wear when they
are undertaking more physical class work in the Ag and
technics subjects. We will let you know more when the
P&C choose the shirt which will go on sale in the
uniform shop.
John Coutis – International Motivational
Speaker
John Coutis will be visiting Junee High School in May.
We have invited all of our partner schools’ Year 5 and 6
students to join us for this special event. John is an
internationally renowned motivational speaker. He is
an inspiration to us all in the way he has not allowed
life’s adversities to set him back. In fact he has
embraced all the possibilities that life offers.
Wonderful Learning Experience – Year 7
Excursion to Sydney
On Wednesday to Friday this week we wish our Year 7
students and a goodly number of Year 11 Peer Leaders
all the best as they head off to the ‘big smoke’. It will
be a wonderful three days as they experience the Royal
Easter Show, Bondi Beach and many other activities
that we often hear about but do not necessarily go to
ourselves. There will be lots of stories on their return
and we will give you a fuller report in our last
newsletter for the term. A special mention must go to
Miss Kingwill for all her preparatory work and her
excellent organisation of this event. She’s a champion!
We go all green for St Patrick’s Day
Congratulations to our Year 12 students on the way
they managed and conducted their first major
fundraising activity for the year. It worked very neatly
with the green theme with a green meringue, green
patty cakes and green jelly cups all being runaway hits.
A sausage sizzle lunch appears to have been a
welcome break from peanut butter sandwich lunches.
Only the best for our students – New
Equipment for the TAS rooms
We were fortunate to receive a grant for $35,000 to
renew several major pieces of equipment in the wood
and metal workshops. We expect that they will be
installed in the new term. Mr Ronald has done a huge
amount of work in preparation for their arrival and
installation. We greatly appreciate his expertise being
available to us to expedite this process. Several of the
old technics machines will be for sale in the near
future. Watch this space.
Students Step up – The Rhythm ‘n Rail
Weekend
More than 30 students volunteered a part of their
weekend to help their community, our community.
Congratulations to all those students who volunteered
some of their time, in fact for many it was quite a lot of
time that they gave to support the wonderfully
successful Rhythm ‘n Rail event. The community pulls
together in such a positive way to make this event such
an outstanding success. As such it is most important
that our students are well represented at such events;
and we were!
Valuable Community Partnerships – The
Junee Men’s Shed
We would like to let our wider school community know
just how valuable our relationship with the Junee
Men’s Shed has been this year. We are regularly using
their expertise and support while they work with
various groups of students from the school. This help is
gratefully received and very much appreciated.
Students are ready for the Schools
Spectacular Auditions
Twelve girls were given a real foot up this year in our
attempt to have some of our students perform in the
2013 Schools’ Spectacular. We thank Kat Fisher from
Wagga Wagga High School who provided her
expertise for a day to ensure that we present a quality
entry when they film their dancing for presentation to
the Sydney-based audition committee. Our best wishes
go with these girls. We hope that they succeed in this
most worthwhile goal.
SMS Update
Mr Matthew Brown
Principal
SMS messages will now only be sent to
parents if the student’s attendance is below
80%.
Tristan takes instruction from one of the Men’s
Shed members.
Child Studies Update
There are several exciting learning opportunities
occurring in Child Studies this term. Students are
currently participating in the Real Care Baby Simulation
program, which involves each student taking care of a
simulation infant for 48 hours. This is quite a realistic
experience for the students as the simulation doll
requires to be fed, burped, rocked and have its nappy
changed, as well as being nursed with proper head
support. The care provided by the students is recorded
electronically, and feedback is provided to the students
at the conclusion of the experience. Students have
enjoyed this experience, although some have learnt
very quickly that being a parent can be demanding and
tiring.
The class has also been offered the opportunity to
apply for four positions within the Small Steps Program
being run through the local Good Start Early Learning
centre. This program is designed to offer students the
opportunity to experience exposure to a child care
work environment. It involves practical experience in
the centre for one day per week for a period of ten
weeks. To be eligible for the program, students must
return their permission note, and complete a written
application and pass an interview process.
We are thrilled to be a part of this new and exciting
program, and look forward to following the success of
the students selected.
processing. Thanks to Mr Dennis Lambert for inviting
us to his property.
Unfortunately in recent weeks we have had to
withdraw from several sporting events. Students are
reminded to make sure they put names in to the
relevant teachers and return notes and the money by
the due date to avoid future forfeits.
Agriculture Donation
Mr Luke Roberts
PDHPE
This week saw another generous donation to the
agriculture farm. Jeff Sutton of ‘Wattle Farm’ Border
Leicester Stud donated a flock ram to the school. This
ram will be used to breed with the stud to cover any of
the ewes that didn’t fall pregnant to the Artificial
Insemination program held last fortnight. This is a
valuable donation which will see the Border Leicester
stud continue to grow and improve our lambing
percentage this year. This ram is a two tooth ram which
is of the ‘Supreme’ bloodline of Wattle Farm and will
be for sale in August.
If anyone knows of farmers that have lupins in storage
and are willing to make a donation to the school
please contact the school.
OHS White Card Training
It is proposed that the next OHS White card training
day will be held next Tuesday 26 March. The cost of
this course is $55. To undertake this course outside of
school the cost can vary from $150 - $226. We need to
have 20 students return notes and payment by this
Friday for the course to go ahead. Any student who is
14 years of age or older is eligible. It is a legal
requirement that any persons working on a building
site (including work experience) hold the white card.
More employers are requiring students on work
experience, regardless of the occupation, to hold a
white card. If you have lost your permission note you
can either get another one from me or print one
directly from the school website.
Lawn Bowls
Last Thursday Junee High School lawn bowls team
took on Temora High School in the second round of
the state knockout. Our team consisted of Kaitlyn
Russell, Jakob Hersant and Ethan Sainsbury. It was a
close run battle with neither team giving away too
many points on each end. Unfortunately for us, Temora
High School came away as the eventual winners.
Credit must be given to our students. Kaitlyn displayed
some great talent and will be a force to be reckoned
with in the future. Ethan came in at short notice and
with only a little amount of experience showed us that
he is more than capable of making some fine shots.
Jakob stepped up this year to become our skip. His
level headed thinking and talent certainly saved the
end score being much greater. Well done.
