Drug <strong>Health</strong><br />

Drug and alcohol dependence is a chronic and relaps<strong>in</strong>g<br />
condition and people with drug and alcohol problems are<br />
significant users of the health care system.<br />
Drug <strong>Health</strong> Services operates as a <strong>District</strong> program<br />
and provides a range of treatments and <strong>in</strong>terventions at<br />
hospitals and community health centres to address the<br />
needs of these patients.<br />
Services <strong>in</strong>clude withdrawal management; residential<br />
rehabilitation; opioid treatment; magistrates early referral<br />
<strong>in</strong>to treatment program (MERIT); harm m<strong>in</strong>imisation<br />
<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g needle syr<strong>in</strong>ge program; counsell<strong>in</strong>g; per<strong>in</strong>atal<br />
and family drug health services and hospital consultation<br />
and liaison.<br />
The pr<strong>in</strong>ciple drugs of concern for patients self present<strong>in</strong>g<br />
to services <strong>in</strong> <strong>2011</strong>-20<strong>12</strong> were opioids (50 per cent) and<br />
alcohol (22 per cent).<br />
The pr<strong>in</strong>ciple drugs of concern for patients <strong>in</strong> hospital<br />
seen by the Drug <strong>Health</strong> hospital liaison team were<br />
alcohol (52 per cent) and opioids (26 per cent).<br />
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR<br />
is the cl<strong>in</strong>ical partnership with the Aborig<strong>in</strong>al Medical<br />
Service Redfern. The Aborig<strong>in</strong>al Women’s Group which<br />
commenced <strong>in</strong> 2004 has received national recognition<br />
as a consumer driven therapeutic model.<br />
• In response to the grow<strong>in</strong>g demand by Aborig<strong>in</strong>al<br />
women seek<strong>in</strong>g professional support follow<strong>in</strong>g a<br />
Community Services notification or assumption <strong>in</strong>to care<br />
of their child or children, the service piloted an Aborig<strong>in</strong>al<br />
specific parent<strong>in</strong>g group called Connect, Cope and<br />
Communicate. Higher rates of assumption <strong>in</strong>to care of<br />
Aborig<strong>in</strong>al children by <strong>NSW</strong> Community Services have<br />
been reported <strong>in</strong> the literature. A recent data report<br />
by the <strong>NSW</strong> Community Services showed that of the<br />
children <strong>in</strong> out-of-home care, one <strong>in</strong> three of these are<br />
Aborig<strong>in</strong>al. Drug <strong>Health</strong> Services, <strong>in</strong> collaboration with a<br />
number of Aborig<strong>in</strong>al health workers <strong>in</strong> the fields of early<br />
childhood, mental health and health promotion along<br />
with parent<strong>in</strong>g educators, worked to develop a culturally<br />
safe, accessible and appropriate parent<strong>in</strong>g program<br />
based on an exist<strong>in</strong>g program titled Tun<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> to Kids. It is<br />
an evidence-based, emotion-focused program that helps<br />
parents connect, understand and relate to their children<br />
and helps them deal with their feel<strong>in</strong>gs and behaviour.<br />
A total of 17 women self-referred and participated <strong>in</strong> the<br />
program and found the program to meet their needs. Of<br />
Opioid Treatment Programs (Canterbury, Royal<br />
Pr<strong>in</strong>ce Alfred Hospital)<br />
• This program provides methadone, buprenorph<strong>in</strong>e or<br />
suboxone stabilisation treatment for people who are<br />
dependent on prescribed or illicit drugs.<br />
• Case management ensures patients have access to a<br />
range of <strong>in</strong>terventions for their drug dependence and<br />
assistance to address associated social problems.<br />
• Dur<strong>in</strong>g the past year more than 700 patients received<br />
such services.<br />
Aborig<strong>in</strong>al <strong>Health</strong><br />
• Aborig<strong>in</strong>al <strong>Health</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ues to be a key focus of Drug<br />
<strong>Health</strong> Services with a dedicated model of care at<br />
Royal Pr<strong>in</strong>ce Alfred Hospital, a key element of which<br />
