Mental <strong>Health</strong><br />

The Mental <strong>Health</strong> Service cont<strong>in</strong>ues to operate as a<br />
comprehensive, <strong>in</strong>tegrated <strong>in</strong>ter-district cl<strong>in</strong>ical stream<br />
across the <strong>Sydney</strong> and South Western <strong>Sydney</strong> <strong>Local</strong><br />
<strong>Health</strong> <strong>District</strong>s.<br />
Community Mental <strong>Health</strong> services <strong>in</strong> the <strong>Sydney</strong> <strong>Local</strong><br />
<strong>Health</strong> <strong>District</strong> are located at Redfern, Camperdown,<br />
Marrickville, Canterbury and Croydon.<br />
Inpatient services are provided through the Missenden<br />
Unit at Royal Pr<strong>in</strong>ce Alfred Hospital, the Concord Centre<br />
for Mental <strong>Health</strong> and the Thomas Walker Hospital<br />
(Rivendell).<br />
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR<br />
• Plann<strong>in</strong>g has cont<strong>in</strong>ued <strong>in</strong> conjunction with the University<br />
of <strong>Sydney</strong> for the construction of 73 mental health beds<br />
with<strong>in</strong> the Northwest Prec<strong>in</strong>ct redevelopment at Royal<br />
Pr<strong>in</strong>ce Alfred Hsopital. Budget approval totall<strong>in</strong>g $67<br />
million, for a 53-bed first stage were announced <strong>in</strong> May.<br />
Construction will start early next year.<br />
• A review of community mental health services was<br />
conducted that has provided a platform for the ongo<strong>in</strong>g<br />
improvement of services.<br />
• A service partnership has been established with nongovernment<br />
organisations through the Camperdown<br />
Common Ground Project which has housed 52 former<br />
homeless people.<br />
• Susta<strong>in</strong>ed and effective partnerships are cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g<br />
with related service providers that <strong>in</strong>clude NGOs, other<br />
government departments and the Division of General<br />
Practice (now the Inner West Medicare <strong>Local</strong>).<br />
THE YEAR AHEAD<br />
• <strong>Review</strong> and development of models of care for<br />
community mental health as per the Community<br />
Mental <strong>Health</strong> <strong>Review</strong> Report March 20<strong>12</strong>.<br />
• Development of Assertive Outreach Team <strong>in</strong> Croydon/<br />
Canterbury.<br />
• Development of enhanced services for young people<br />
with psychosis or ultra-high risk of develop<strong>in</strong>g a<br />
psychosis.<br />
• Development of improved pathways towards<br />
employment for people with mental health problems<br />
• Further development of physical health screen<strong>in</strong>g and<br />
<strong>in</strong>terven<strong>in</strong>g for people with endur<strong>in</strong>g mental illness.<br />
