y Tom Brodersen Long awaited new library opens The new 10,000-squarefoot Prescott College Library in the Crossroads Center Information Commons provides 50 percent more shelf space to expand the collections of books, periodicals, reference materials, and audio and video media. In the new periodicals room, popular magazines and scholarly journals are displayed in an attractive and accessible way, which was impossible in the old space. Comfortable chairs and colorful carpets make it a relaxing and stimulating space for formal and informal meetings. The Prescott College Library is by nature both a commons and a crossroads. Historically, the “commons” is an ancient mode of preserving and managing shared space for grazing, hunting, and foraging. Librarians, as stewards of the information commons, maintain cultural resources for shared use by the community. The library is already a crossroads with the local community. The library is a crossroads in time and space. A library preserves and makes available information and ideas from the history of global civilization. The library offers an avenue into a wide spectrum of arts and sciences through a variety of media books, magazines, audio, and video. In the new building, the College Archives finally has a home designed to preserve and make available photographs and documents related to the history of the Prescott College community. Now, through the Internet, a dozen iMacs and eMacs scattered throughout the library provide a portal into a potentially boundless planetary community. Through the Adult Degree Program and the Master of Arts Program distant students from throughout the country borrow
ooks and articles and have access to the journal databases. The wireless network extends Internet access beyond the walls of the library to the café and surrounding grounds. In a sense, the new library is without walls or at least very permeable walls. The building itself embodies this idea. The soaring wall of glass on the south side floods the interior with natural light and allows a visual connection with the world outside. From the upper level a student can gaze out over the rooftops of town to the treecovered hills on the horizon while contemplating the relationship of nature and culture. Photovoltaic panels atop the rough log pillars transform sunlight into electricity. The massive rammed earth walls are penetrated by openings with window seats. From the west windows we look out onto Butte Creek as it flows by on its way to the Colorado River. The Information Commons is both an idea and a place. The idea is that informed and active citizens are essential to a free society and that a place must be designed to serve that need. The Prescott College mission statement recognizes the need to nurture people who “think critically and act ethically with sensitivity to both the human community and the biosphere.” The Crossroads Center is an effort to embody those ideals.
