drum. The attachment was
accomplished with a bolt-on
cast half link with mounting
bracket that welds to the drum,
also called a “D” link. The link is
inserted through the first whole
link in each length of chain
and then welded to the drum.
The other end of each chain
remained free.
Drum cleaning takes place as
the drum rotates and causes
the chain lengths to lay on the
drum and then as the chain
lengths go over the top, they
slide down the drum surface
until fully extended. The
cleaning action does not involve
any heavy loads or violent
movements, which in turn does
not pose a wear problem to the
drum, chain lengths, or half
Corten is a weather-resistant steel which
could more accurately be termed as an
“Atmospheric Corrosion Resistant Steel.”
Corten, a self-protecting steel, is long
lasting and easily recyclable. Because it
is a copper chromium alloy steel, Corten
displays a greater level of resistance to
atmospheric weathering when compared
to other unalloyed steels. Its chemical
composition promotes the early formation
of an adhering protective layer of rust
when exposed to the elements.

Outer Shell
The Double Barrel was equipped
with a special insulated outer
chamber for heating, mixing
and coating recycled and virgin
aggregate. The outer chamber
has a large access door that
is lined with Ni-Hard for long
wear life. It includes inlets
for receiving recycled asphalt
and baghouse fines (or dry
additives). The discharge chute
is lined with Super Clad ® plate
on the sliding surface for long
wear life. The new outer shell
was designed with an 18” (46
cm) chamber.
Quality of Work
The existing frame was
sandblasted and repainted.
Quality materials and the latest
Astec design and innovation
went into the intricate project.
Not only was the entire inner
drum replaced, the mixing
chamber was expanded. This
required everything on the
drum frame to move up. The
increased weight was offset by
adding a set of tag axles to the
frame.
