to make either product simply
by engaging the right controls
to move the aggregates to the
appropriate mixer. The concept,
ConAsphalt, becomes a multimix
production facility.
The desirability of the multi-mix
production facility centers on the
fact that there is an entire range
of products within the asphalt
and concrete world that are
different from one another, such
as SMA and warm mix asphalt,
and cold mix used for patching.
On the concrete side, there is
a cement-treated base which
provides the material between
the grade and the pavement—an
important element of good road
or runway construction. Another
process is soil amendment
for large structures requiring
a strong foundation. Cementstabilized
soil ensures flat, level
floors for warehouses or other
industrial facilities. Any of these
products, including conventional
concrete and roller-compacted
concrete, could be produced in
the ConAsphalt plant.
Multi-material Producers
This concept can also be a
retrofit with installation taking a
few days or no more time than
the typical plant install. Astec can
convert the asphalt plant into a
ConAsphalt operation and truly
be the solution to the contractor
needing to expand into other
revenue streams. With Astec
technology and the ConAsphalt
plant concept, asphalt or concrete
producers could become multimaterial
providers, increasing
the financial strength of their
companies.
Check out the next issue of Hot-Mix for the
spotlight article, “Universal concrete plant
moves to airport project…”
Astec designed and manufactured a Continuous Blending concrete
plant with a newly configured self-erecting mixer that operates in an
elevated position above the truck driveway. This provided a layout of
5 bins for the aggregate section, and a tri-folding incline conveyor to
move all combined dry materials into the mixer. This mixer was built
with the proprietary “serpentine mixing pattern” and the world’s first
tilting frame for a twin-shaft mixer.
These features are final touches of a concrete plant design to produce
Astec “Calibrated-Concrete.” Using fractioned coarse aggregates and
blended cementitious materials, this plant combines all dry materials
into a layered flow into the twin-shaft mixer. Surrounding the dry
material inlet on the mixer is the water manifold which combines
all liquids—both the mix water and the required admixtures—into
a homogeneous solution that is precisely metered through a water
curtain to shower the mix with the precise amount of water required.
What discharges from the mixer is Astec “Calibrated-Concrete,” the
most consistent and cost-effective concrete available today.
This Universal plant is aptly named because it can produce concrete
across a broad range of types—from Pervious and RCC to conventional
slipform mix—with demanding pumped mixes as normal fare.
We will keep you updated with the work
at the airport—stay tuned!
