Forage Management In view <strong>of</strong> the period <strong>of</strong> low forage availability under deep shade (below 20% sunlight), 't will be difficult to obtain substainable high animal production. Unfortunately, this long "gloomy" period occupies more than half <strong>of</strong> the economic life span <strong>of</strong> most tree crops. Ignorance <strong>of</strong> such conditions may have serious implications in shaping research and development programmes. Normally, a well managed plantation schedules its replanting plan ir, staggering periods so that a quarter <strong>of</strong> the total estate land area is in immature phase at any given time. Herbage under young, medium and old trees should be taken into account in an integrated management to maximize animal production. In areas where a long annual dry season prevails, the use <strong>of</strong> by-products as feed supplements should be considered. In order to prevent the problem <strong>of</strong> fluctuating forage supplies, the integrated production system should be conservative in regard to the total number <strong>of</strong> stock that the plantation can support. Overgrazing or understocking is a loss to the integrated production system (Sanchez, 1990). Hence, to take the animal component into consideration, a manager may have to orientate his thinking towards conserving forages for the animal component rather than eradicating the weeds in plantation fields. For a compromise between weeding and best nutrient levels for both plant and animal production, utilization <strong>of</strong> 6007o <strong>of</strong> the above ground cover in each round <strong>of</strong> weeding/ grazing period may allow sufficient leaf area and carbohydrate reserve for optimum physiological regrowth <strong>of</strong> plants under shade. This implies that under a deep shading environment, forages should be grazed lightly and provided with shorter regrowth intervals as compared with more open situations. Under normal circumstances, several groups <strong>of</strong> animals are maintained in the farm (i.e. the breeders, the male and female growers, and the finishers). Consequently areas in the plantation should be sorted accordingly with the nutrient needs. This translates into expensive physical partitioning in the field. Natural barrier such as rivers or steep hills can be utilized, to separate the flocks. During scheduled farm work, priority should be given to plantation routines, such as spraying, fertilizing or harvesting, while animal grazing should move ahead <strong>of</strong> all the routine schedules to avoid unnecessary disturbance. The following management systems <strong>of</strong> forages are likely to be encountered. Continuous grazing A fixed number <strong>of</strong> animals are allowed to graze in a relatively large field for a period <strong>of</strong> some months without changing the animals (preferably breeders). A moderate stocking rate, based on herbage availability, has to be worked out for the land area. Minimum movement <strong>of</strong> animals in and out <strong>of</strong> the area is expected. The impact <strong>of</strong> weeding may not be seen instantly since moderate stocking capacity on pasture is designed. Rotational grazing A block <strong>of</strong> land partitioned into a few smaller plots or subpaddocks is allocated to a fixed number <strong>of</strong> animals to graze regularly for a fixed period <strong>of</strong> time. Usually, 4 to 6 periods <strong>of</strong> grazing per year would keep weeds under control. Some form <strong>of</strong> fencing is needed if this system is implemented. 18
