Douglas DeVivo has been<br />

founding and investing in<br />

high-tech ventures since<br />

graduating from <strong>Haas</strong>. He<br />

was a founding partner <strong>of</strong><br />

Vanguard Associates in 1981 and funded over<br />

20 companies, including Aldus, Digital<br />

Microwave, and Endosonics. “I started<br />

Vanguard Associates with two friends who<br />

were local Silicon Valley executives,” says<br />

DeVivo. “We started making a few investments<br />

and two years later raised a $30 million fund.”<br />

DeVivo moved on from Vanguard to help found<br />

Sequoia Capital Growth Fund in 1989 and is<br />

currently a founding general partner at Alce<br />

Ventures, where he specializes in venture capital<br />

investing in tech companies and manages a<br />

hedge fund. Alce is Italian for Moose, named<br />

after Moose, Wyoming, where Doug and his<br />

business partner, Mario Gabelli, have a house in<br />

the Tetons.<br />
