Mayor Rama began his political career as a councilor of the south district, serving for three
full terms during which he became president of the Philippine Councilors League (1998-
2001). Then in 2001, he ran for vice mayor and won with overwhelming votes, both in the
south and north districts. He served as vice mayor for three terms and was also the
president of the Vice Mayor’s League of the Philippines from 2007-2010.
Rama was elected as the Mayor of Cebu in 2010. Immediately after assuming his post as
mayor, he took a stand against his detractors not by a word war but through his programs
and projects which he implemented in the city. Among his major achievements are: Adopt a
Police and Fire Station, Adopt a Health Center, Closure of the Inayawan Sanitary Landfill,
the ongoing clearing of the Mahiga Creek, road restoration projects in several barangays,
the beautification of Osmeña Boulevard, and the strict implementation of the “No
Segregation, No Collection” policy in compliance with Republic Act No. 9003 otherwise
known as the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000. He also inaugurated the
Senior Citizens’ Park and has made sure that Fort San Pedro and Plaza Independencia as
well as Plaza Sugbu will always be clean, beautiful, and safe.
Mayor Rama has also initiated the installation of night markets in the downtown area and
in the Carbon Market which he has also successfully cleaned up. He initiated Pasko sa
Sugbu and Pasko sa V. Rama as well as the Buhing Kalbaryo every Lenten season. He also
made sure that the City Hall’s Executive and Legislative offices would be kept clean.
Another initiative of his is the “City Hall at Your Doorstep,” bringing the services of the city
government to the different barangays every week. Mayor Rama has served Cebu City with
transparency and with the welfare of all his constituents in his mind and heart, always
remembering that “Together, We Can Make Things Happen.”
