His youthful and passionate love for Ernestine von Fricken was short-lived, but it occasioned Schumann in 1837 to write the “intensely emotional variations” on a theme of her father’s, which were eventually to become the “Orchestral etudes”. Fifteen years later a new edition was published, authorised by Schumann, containing such important changes that we have included both versions. Zu dieser Zeit studierte er Jura. Seine erste, mit „Exercice“ betitelte Niederschrift sah er jedoch zunächst nicht für eine Veröffentlichung vor; erst als er seinen Weg als Musiker suchte, griff er die Entwürfe wieder auf. Ähnlich wie bei den Paganini-Etüden versuchte er dabei, Virtuosität mit musikalischem Gehalt zu verbinden. Die Druckfassung dieser „Toccata“ wich schließlich stark von den ersten Ideen zur Exercice ab. Das Autograph der endgültigen Fassung ist verschollen, die „Exercice“ blieb dagegen in Schumanns Handschrift erhalten. Sie erscheint im Anhang unserer revidierten Edition als Erstausgabe. Schumann began work on the Toccata op. 7 when he was only 20 years old. At the time he was studying law. He did not, however, intend to have his first manuscript, entitled “Exercice”, published; it was only when he was finding his way as a musician that he turned to the sketches again. Similar to his approach with the Paganini studies, he endeavoured to combine virtuosity with musical content. The print version of this “Toccata” differed greatly from the first ideas for the “Exercice”. The autograph of the final version is missing, although the “Exercice” has survived in the form of Schumann’s manuscript. It is reproduced in the appendix of our revised edition of the first publication. In joint creative sessions, Schumann composed his four piano fugues op. 72, which he wanted to be seen as “Character pieces but with a stricter form”, while Clara wrote her “Six Preludes and Fugues”. Even true connoisseurs of Schumann will discover new sides to this accomplished composer in these works. As he was interested in politics, Schumann took an active interest in the democratically motivated unrest in spring 1848. The following year he directly witnessed the May uprising in Dresden. These circumstances influenced his music.
