• Buffalo berry<br />

The ground layer is typically sparse<br />

and may consist <strong>of</strong>:<br />

• Beach heath<br />

• Poison ivy<br />

• Cudweed<br />

• Butterfly weed<br />

• False Solomon seal<br />

• Hairy puccoon<br />

• Beach grass<br />

• Dune grass<br />

• Fescue<br />

• Poverty grass<br />

• June grass<br />

• Nut grass<br />

Distribution and status<br />

These communities are very locally<br />

distributed along the shorelines <strong>of</strong> lakes<br />

Huron, <strong>Michigan</strong>, and Superior. Outside<br />

the protection <strong>of</strong> parks and reserves,<br />

their status is tenuous. Unregulated<br />

shoreline development and rampaging<br />

dune vehicles are constant threats.<br />
