Balds, Cliffs, and Glades
Distribution and status
Forested balds and bedrock glades
are rare because the habitats that support
them occur in only a few places in
Michigan. They are found exclusively in
the ancient highlands of the western
Upper Peninsula (Region IV). Cliffs also
are rare, occurring in just a few places
along lakes Michigan and Superior in
the Upper Peninsula. Rock forests generally
are well protected in parks and
reserves or by their inaccessibility.
Key viewing areas
• Fayette State Park (Garden Peninsula
southwest of Manistique in Delta
County).
• Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore
(Alger County northwest of Munising).
