FIELD NOTES OSHIKATI FLOOD PREVENTION WETLAND AND FISH SURVEY:<br />

24 – 29 JUNE 2012<br />

A) FISH USE INTERVIEWS / SUMMARY OF RESPONSES<br />

Interview 1<br />

- 26 June Dike 5 – Okatana stream<br />

7 in household, 3M, 4F ages 6-90, Income NDF and Pension – no household<br />

appliances.<br />

2 ladies walking to Okatana, completed Grade 12, Dike site 5 Okatana stream,<br />

Eat tinned fish, marine fish mostly and prefer fish to meat.<br />

Catch fish using mosquito net for eenhango (small fish), baskets, and oshongo (push<br />

basket).<br />

Best time to catch is in afternoons when water is getting low.<br />

Use cleaned mussel shells (onkosa) to pour water to treat small children.<br />

2010 was best year for fish, 2011 good but not better than 2010, 2012 not that high<br />

but plenty of eenhangu (small fish).<br />

2010 + 2011 flood too high (family member drowned), High until June. 2012 flood<br />

low.<br />

Government provided food after flood as little food from own crops, some people<br />

relocated,<br />

This year food from own crops.<br />

7. Did not know about proposed wall, no clear idea of it or likely impacts.<br />
