Maltese Medical Corps The Medical Corps is an organization which, in accordance with the motto of the Order - Tuitio fidei et obsequium pauperum – provides assistance to the sick and needy. In preparation for their work they conduct courses of first aid, with participation not only by potential members of their organization, but other persons who wish to be proficient in that skill. The Corps continues activities initiated by a team of volunteers formed in Kraków in 1990. The primary activity of the Maltese Medical Service is to provide emergency coverage to pilgrimages and mass religious celebrations, sports events, concerts, congresses and other cultural events. The Corps has its own ambulances for transporting of the sick and injured. In addition, the Corps conducts educational activities among young people, forming groups of cadets. 10
A New Challenge Building a new facility for the Specialized Oncological Out-Patient Clinic Because of ever-mounting difficulties with the premises of the Specialized Oncological Out-Patient Clinic, founded by the Knights of Malta over 15 years ago, and in response to an increasing need for medical care of inhabitants of Wielkopolska Province, the Polish Association of Knights of Malta and the Foundation of Polish Knights of Malta decided to expand their largest charitable work in Poznań. Responding positively to their initiative, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Poznań, H.E. Stanisław Gądecki granted them, at no cost, a plot of land of 800 m 2 (0.2 acre) for the building of a new clinic. Widespread consultations were immediately undertaken to prepare architectural concepts that would make the best use of the site. After obtaining a ruling on the conditions for building on and utilization of the site, and presenting documentation to the authorities, in June 2007 the Foundation obtained formal permission to construct the clinic. The new clinic will be located within the premises of the Parish of St. John of Jerusalem Beyond the Walls, in the Commandery in Poznań. This is historic spot for our Order, where the first Knights of St. John lived and conducted their works. If historian Jan Długosz is to be believed, it was on May 6 1170 that Bishop Radwan and Duke Mieszko III the Old invited them to operate a hospital and hospice. The planned clinic will be housed in a three-storey structure with basement, with total floor area of 960 m 2 and usable area of 770 m 2 (10,333 and 8,300 sq. ft., respectively). The clinic will contain facilities for mammography, densitometry, ultrasonography, hispatology; rooms for oncology, surgery, gynecology, cardiology, psychology, treatments. We anticipate that the services rendered by the clinic may grow as needs dictate.
