Foundation of Polish Knights of Malta “Maltese Aid” based in Warsaw Support in the job market for persons with motor disabilities In the course of the project we undertook many activities fostering social and occupational activation of the participants. Workshops of active job-hunting gave them the tools needed to navigate the current job market. Sessions with a psychologist allow the participants to discover their strong and weak points, learn about conflict resolution and dealing with stress. From an occupational advisor, they learn how to write a CV and cover letter, where to look for jobs and how to prepare for job interviews. The legal section provides knowledge of the rights of the handicapped within the country’s legislative framework. Workshops of active job-hunting were conducted both statically (within the Support Centers) and in the field, with parallel activities for parents and guardians. In order to improve their competitive position and hone their occupational skills, participants take part in training sessions in various fields, such as telemarketing, projecting a professional appearance, computer skills. In addition, individual professional training programs, purchased from outside firms, prepare them for specific trades, such as computer graphic artist, human resources worker, telemarketer, archivist, artistic craftsman, manicurist. Professional internships are available to test one’s learned skills in actual practice and assess readiness to undertake paid work. We help participants in continuing their education by paying tuition, or by purchasing textbooks and study aids. Some were provided with specialized computer or rehabilitational equipment which allowed them to take part in activities promoting social and occupational activation. In addition, our participants can avail themselves of the services of a legal advisor, equipment specialist, doctor, speech therapist, and others. Consultations with a psychologist and counselor result in individualized action plans for each participant, with “career paths” laying out courses of action after leaving the program. 2

Each one of them is a different life story, different occupational experiences, and consequently, received different support offered by our program. Some of our participants began their activation from the beginning, in job-hunting workshops where they learned to write CV’s, look for job offers on the Internet, recognize their strong and weak points. Some of them learned new computer skills, others were supported in their interrupted or new-found occupational path. We directed participants to individually selected internships and professional training programs; among them were persons who learned specialized computer programs, bookkeeping, office work, telemarketing, artistic handicrafts. Some participants departed very quickly, because they soon found jobs. Among them are: a lawyer, security guard, polygraph operator, data operator, media monitor, information scientist. Thanks to their participation in our program, disabled persons found a helping hand both in the difficult job market and in developing their own individuality. 3
