Representativeness<br />
High<br />
A collection of small islands, typical of the complex interaction of islands and<br />
coastline.<br />
Rarity High The assemblage of smaller and larger scale islands, both settled and unsettled,<br />
are unusual in their extent and variety<br />
Intactness High The islands are largely unaffected by intrusive development. A quarry is<br />
prominent above Scalloway. Settlement expansion is affecting the area<br />
around the settlement.<br />
Scenic qualities Very high Attractive islands, with strong appeal in its visual complexity. Backed by high<br />
ground to the west, the low lying landscape is alternately gentle and rugged.<br />
Enjoyment High There are a number of visitor attractions within Scalloway, including that<br />
Crofting Museum, Scalloway Castle and marinas at Scalloway and Hamnavoe.<br />
The area has a number of popular walking routes and other opportunities for<br />
recreational activities, with and an outdoor centre is located at Bridgend.<br />
Cultural qualities High Historic village of Scalloway with its prominent castle, some brochs and<br />
other features<br />
Naturalness Very high The interplay of sea and land is the most important aspect of this landscape.<br />
Rural pattern High There are some crofting areas present along the more sheltered areas of the<br />
coast, with relict patterns of settlement on some islands, including disused<br />
houses.<br />
Views High This is a visible landscape from Scalloway and from the mainland. Long views<br />
along and between the islands, and seaward views. Long views to Fitful Head<br />
and Foula in the distance.<br />
