<strong>Lab</strong> 8: Respiration<br />
Experiment 1: Fermentation by yeast<br />
Yeast cells produce ethanol and CO 2 during fermentation. We will measure the production of CO 2 to<br />
determine the rate of anaerobic respiration in the presence of different carbohydrates.<br />
Note: Sucrose (a disaccharide) is made up of glucose and fructose. Glucose is a monosaccharide.<br />
Materials<br />
5 Respirometers (Figure 2)<br />
1% Glucose solution<br />
1% Sucrose solution<br />
Equal, Splenda, and sugar<br />

1 Yeast packet<br />
4 250mL Beakers<br />
100mL Graduated cylinder<br />
