FALL PROGRAMS!<br />

<strong>Dovercourt</strong> recreation association (DRA) is a not-for-profit charitable<br />

organization with the mission of building a healthy, active and engaged<br />

community through recreation. While we are part of the City of Ottawa’s<br />

recreation system, DRA is empowered to choose what programs it runs to meet<br />

the community’s needs, and how those programs are delivered. Our motto<br />

is “a community working for the community, une communauté qui travaille<br />

pour la communauté”. Staff, volunteers, clients, local community groups and<br />

businesses working together…that’s <strong>Dovercourt</strong>!<br />

Kitchissippi is a vibrant, active and cooperative ward, due in no small<br />

part to the vital role that our community centres play in bringing<br />

together neighbours and neighbourhoods. <strong>Dovercourt</strong> Recreation<br />

Centre continues to be a hub for the community and an important<br />

space for building connections and having those meaningful<br />

interactions that guide and shape our exciting ward. The strength of<br />

Kitchissippi can be found in our communities.<br />

As councillor for Kitchissippi I am very proud of the role that<br />

<strong>Dovercourt</strong> Recreation Association serves in our ward and of<br />

the unique relationship that it represents between the city and<br />

community.<br />

Le quartier Kitchissippi est un quartier actif et dynamique, où les gens<br />

collaborent, et ce, en bonne partie grâce au rôle vital que jouent nos<br />

centres communautaires dans le rapprochement entre les voisins et<br />

les voisinages. Le Centre récréatif <strong>Dovercourt</strong> demeure un carrefour<br />

communautaire et un lieu important pour ce qui est de nouer des<br />

liens et de susciter des interactions significatives qui guident et<br />

façonnent notre passionnant quartier. Ce sont nos communautés qui<br />

font la force de Kitchissippi.<br />

En qualité de conseiller de Kitchissippi, je suis très fier du rôle que le<br />

Moms (and dads) get fit with their babies<br />

by learning fun steps to the rhythmic beats<br />

of Salsa and other Latin dances such as<br />

Merengue, Rumba, Cumbia and Bachata.<br />

Baby-Wearing Latin Dance class is open to<br />

everyone. You don’t even need to know<br />

how to dance; the desire to share a special<br />

moment of music and movement with your<br />

child is all you need. Salsa is soothing for a<br />

baby, since the rocking movements bring<br />

them back to the time they spent in utero.<br />

Your baby will love being swayed while in<br />

THE SWIM FOR LIFE®<br />

PROGRAM<br />

Basic swimming ability is a requirement<br />

of any meaningful attempt to eliminate<br />

drowning in Canada. Swim for Life®<br />

is a comprehensive swim instruction<br />

program that focuses on the acquisition<br />

and development of fundamental swim<br />

strokes and skills for learners of all ages and<br />

abilities. Learning Swim to Survive® skills<br />

and achieving the Lifesaving Society’s Swim<br />

to Survive® Standard are key foundations<br />

of the Swim for Life® <strong>Program</strong>.<br />

LIFESAVING PARENT &<br />

TOTS<br />

A rewarding experience for adults with<br />

infants or toddlers. These levels introduce<br />

the joys of water activity while stressing<br />

parental responsibility in, on and around<br />

the water. Parent participation required, but<br />

just one “water loving” parent is permitted<br />

in the pool due to our limited pool space.<br />

in the water with eyes open and exhale in a<br />

relaxed manner.<br />

Preschool C<br />

Prerequisites: Participants can float on front<br />

and back in PFD without assistance; swim<br />

5m on front and back any way with an aid;<br />

and exhale under water 3 times without<br />

pause.<br />

Preschool D<br />

Prerequisites: Participants can float and<br />

move in deep water with assistance;<br />

breathe rhythmically 5 times; flutter kick<br />

while gliding on front and back 5m; recover<br />

objects from the bottom.<br />

Preschool E<br />

Prerequisites: Participants are comfortable<br />

jumping into deep water unassisted; front<br />

and back float in deep water unassisted;<br />

kick on front and back for 7m each; 5m of<br />

continuous front crawl with aid.<br />

LESSONS AT DOVERCOURT?<br />

<strong>Dovercourt</strong>’s highly-skilled instructors<br />

are able to teach children proper<br />

technique efficiently and effectively,<br />

in accordance with the high standards<br />

of the Lifesaving Society. Our endof-session<br />

Survival Day is unique to<br />

<strong>Dovercourt</strong> and is a fun yet powerful<br />

way to teach children skills that could<br />

save their lives in real-life scenarios.<br />

Our staff undergo extensive training<br />

and regular updates on safety,<br />

rescue situations, changes to current<br />

standards, as well as techniques for<br />

teaching. Many of our senior aquatics<br />

staff are instructor and lifeguard<br />

trainers and are a valuable resource<br />

for our aquatics team. Our leisure pool<br />

is designed to teach swimming, with<br />

unique features like warmer water, a<br />

beach entry, rope swing and shallow &<br />

deep water pods. We are proud of the<br />

quality of our swim lesson program at<br />

<strong>Dovercourt</strong>!<br />

Private lessons are $22.25 for 30 min.<br />

Semi-Private Lessons (2 or 3 students<br />

is great for older adults with joint<br />

SIMPLY STRETCH<br />

Basic and gentle stretching is a<br />

necessary component of fitness in<br />

order to maintain or gain muscular<br />

variety of active and static stretches<br />

REGISTRATION<br />

Online registration is available through our e-connect<br />

site, accessible from the right sidebar of every page of<br />

our website at www.dovercourt.org (click on the orange<br />

“Register Online” button). Online registration is available<br />

to both returning and new <strong>Dovercourt</strong> customers. If you<br />

are new, you can create your own Family Account online.<br />

If you have forgotten your client number and Account<br />

PIN, this can be emailed to you by our system. From<br />

our online site, browse through our program sections<br />

or use the specific program course code to make your<br />

selections. In-person registration is available at either<br />

reception desk at <strong>Dovercourt</strong> Recreation Centre. Phone<br />

registration: Call 613-798-8950 ext. 0 to speak with a<br />

customer service representative. Payments made online<br />

and by telephone are by credit card only. In-person<br />

registrations can be paid by credit card, debit card,<br />

cheque or cash.<br />
