about Severna park
Life in Severna Park
Severna Park is located on the Broadneck Peninsula, in Anne Arundel
County. Bordered by the Severn River and the Magothy River, both
broad tidal estuaries on the Chesapeake Bay, Severna Park is profoundly
influenced by the water and recreational options abound. Many Severna
Park residents enjoy sailing, power-boating, canoeing and kayaking.
Residents take great
pride in their homes,
and Severna Park is
thought of as a solid,
family community.
Housing styles vary
from renovated
summer cottages to
new homes with all
the amenities. While
Severna Park has
predominantly single
family homes, there
are some duplex style
homes available, as
well as senior housing
of various types.
Severna Park is convenient
to the cultural attractions
of Annapolis,
Baltimore and Washington.
While historic
Annapolis, the Maryland capital city, is a very short drive to the south;
Baltimore and Washington are each less than 30 miles away. Severna
Park residents are comfortable and knowledgeable in all three cities, but
they also enjoy the convenience of shopping locally in the Park, as well
as Severna Park’s abundance of community activities for all ages.
Local History
While the earliest land transactions in Severna Park date back to 1680,
the first plats of the land were made by
A. Boudin and Company in 1906. The
community celebrated its Centennial in
2006. The beginning of development
in Severna Park took place in what is
known as Olde Severna Park. Over
the years, development reached along
the shores of the Severn and across the
peninsula to the Magothy River.
In the early days, Severna Park was
basically a summer resort community.
In addition to Baltimore Annapolis
Boulevard, there was rail transportation
via the WB&A Railroad, which served
Washington, Baltimore and Annapolis.
This service began in 1908 and ended
in 1950. The station still remains and
is the home of the Severna Park Model
Railroad Club.
For more information on local history, there are three books available:
Severna Park: A History of the Area, by Nelson Molter; Severna Park
Reflections, edited by Elsie Mullinix and and Kathleen Giddings Hankins,
and My River Speaks, by Marianne Taylor. Severna Park celebrates
Heritage Day each October.
Greater Severna Park Defined
Some say that “Severna Park is a state of mind,” as it really defies
conventional geographic boundaries. The heart of the Severna Park is
the 21146 zip code, but it is generally considered to also include adjacent
portions of Arnold (2012), Millersville (21108), and Pasadena (21122).
The statistics presented, however, only include the 21146 zip.
Services for All
While Severna Park is in an unincorporated area, it has a full complement
of public services available to residents. Severna Park is served
by Anne Arundel County Public School System, the County Police, and
has County parks, large and small. In case of emergency, residents are
instructed to call 911. There are three fire stations—Earleigh Heights,
Jones Station and Arnold. Many communities have public water and sewer
service, as well as natural gas
lines. During winter snows,
the local roads are plowed by
County crews and the highways
by State crews. Severna
Park has its own branch library,
located at 45 McKinsey Road.
Many Severna Park seniors
take advantage of the many
programs offered at the Arnold
Senior Center.
In addition public services, the
area is served by the nonprofit
Severna Park Community Center,
which includes top-notch
facilities for meetings, classes,
swimming, and more. The
Holy Grounds Youth Center
serves as a gathering place for young people.
