community to live and do business is that the residents work together to
solve problems and improve the area.
With more than 640 members, the Greater Severna Park Chamber of
Commerce (http://www.severnaparkchamber.com) unites the business
community, dealing with issues and attracting new business, but also taking
a proactive stand to protect the environment and to create a calendar
of community events that all residents can enjoy.
Since the area is unincorporated, community associations represent
the needs of the their residents, and this is done through an umbrella
association, known as the Greater Severna Park Council, which serves
65 member communities. For more information, go to: http://www.
Because of the proximity of the Severn and Magothy Rivers, it is not
surprising that Severna Park residents are quite active in the Severn
River Association, http://www.severnriver.org and the Magothy River
Association, http://www.magothyriver.org. Through
these associations, residents work to attack the area’s environmental
challenges.
In 1994, ASPIRE (Association for Severna Park Improvement,
Renewal and Enhancement, Inc.), http://www.
severnaparkaspire.org as founded as a 501(c)3 organization.
ASPIRE’s slogan is “Preserving the past; celebrating
the present; and planning the future.” Each year ASPIRE
hosts a Severna Park Heritage Day program, as well as hosts
the Community Leadership Dinner where leaders from nonprofit
organizations are recognized for their efforts. ASPIRE
also was responsible for the murals along the B&A Trail,
and other murals are planned. ASPIRE is also host to the
political satire performances of the Capitol Steps, with funds
raised to offset programs and operational expenses.
